Class Log - Practical Uses for Magic in the Modern Day

[It was the first day of class and Urtz was feeling great. Her Magic 101 class had went went and she was sure her Practical Magic class would be even better. Currently she's standing in front of the chalkboard but behind a desk with a stack of syllabuses on it. Whenever a student walks in, she greets each of them politely before asking them to take one as they find a seat they like.

Once it reaches 1 o'clock the door is closed and class can begin.]

Once again, hello everyone. I am a new professor here at this wonderful academy. My name is Lady Urtz Cromwell. If you wish to call me "Professor", I won't stop but you, but Lady Cromwell or Professor Cromwell is preferred. You'll find, both in life and in my class, that a little bit of respect can go a long way.

[She steps out behind the desk and makes her way to the front row.]

Now then, this class is something I came up with on my own. Some of you may see magic as a way to primarily fight again Nightfall. While offensive magic is important, there are many other uses for spells and magic overall. Things that will help you in your everyday life or that can get you out of a problematic situation. For example, one of my personal favorite spells is Et Digitos Magum. This allows you to create a hand of magic which you can control as easily as if it were your own. It can move quite a distance away from you, can't be damaged, and is an excellent way to start making spells your own.

General spells like this will be taught in this class, but a class like this needs to be tailored to its students. So I'd like to hear a little bit from each of you. Your dreams, goals, and the like. I'll try to incorporate ways to help in my lesson plan. Now, if there aren't any questions... [She gestures towards the class.] I'd like to hear from each of you.

[After her class, Urtz can be found in her office writing and typing. She actually got to her office earlier than scheduled and she plans on staying later, so no problems with stopping by late. Anyone is welcome to her office hours, too, even if you're faculty or you aren't in one of her classes.]

[Genuine curiosity is very much appreciated in her class. As is healthy amounts of skepticism.]

It's certainly possible. I could see the spell being used to remove things from a black hole before they were fully drawn into it.

You are?! [Fellow hat enthusiasts were hard to come by, she has found out! So it is always exciting to meet a new one.]

[Commissions has been something Puella has thought about before too, actually. Now that getting mist is no longer an issue, and in some ways the kind she gets now even works better. ...Though it has a higher chance of being destructive if she uses it wrong.]

As long as I can write my runes on it, I can enchant almost anything!

...But I rather stick to smaller stuff.

[ Storage in the hat, hm? There's a certain classic nature to that, a sense of stage magic that's not displeasing. Hibiki steps forward, leaving Ando to take very deep breaths on his own (or perhaps she's seeking to end his torment as quickly as possible?), and surveys the remains of the dresser. ] But of course.

[ Now, the main event.

First is positioning. Hibiki walks around the ex-dresser until she's certain every student in the room has an excellent view of her. Second is dignity. She draws herself up to her most impeccable posture, raises her chin to haughtily look down upon the object of her imminent enchantment.

A hand raises. Purple sparkles trail behind it. One can almost see petals dancing in the air around her, and it's unclear whether that's an illusion or just a natural byproduct of being Hibiki Shikyoin.

Hibiki focuses on the dresser. Concentrate. Will it back together. For someone possessing abilities of her potency, that's child's play. Will it back together. ]

How does it....fit back together....? ]

[Oh this is just too rich. Though her smile seems as friendly as ever, there's a slight difference to the upper curves of her mouth. Possibly hinting at some level of mirth for Hibiki's situation, but who can say. Though even she isn't without a heart. Sparkles begin to glimmer around the pile, making it more than a little difficult for people in the back to see. Urtz also moves her body to position herself in front of Hibiki. As she does this, a piece from the pile falls out. Then another. Should Hibiki look at the two, she'll find they go together. As good of a place to start as any.

Though where did they come from?]

It's worth a shot. Though you needn't do anything you don't wish to. I simply feel it's important to keep an open mind.

[Though don't think she didn't catch that first part.]

At any rate...you mentioned things you've "been". Am I to believe you are a shapeshifter as well?

Indeed I am. The one I have on now is but one of many in my collection. Though I am rather fond of this one in particular.

[Just as Puella seems to be fond of her top hat. Which, honestly, is fair. It's a classic and she looks adorable with it on.]

And regardless, my potential offer still stands, though I will keep that in mind. I can understand wanting to stick with easier projects until you feel comfortable working your way up.

Fascinating. Hypotehtically-

[ Oh no, he's already got his notepad out. He's trying to work out a way to make a conjourable suit of armour out of the same sort of spell. ]

[It isn't often people trail off mid-sentence and begin furiously writing in a notebook. Her curious nature urges her to check out the book, but she refrains.

...instead, she just decides to bring it up. That's way less rude.]

Might there be something else I can assist you with, Mr. Arany?

Rex.

[ He corrects automatically without looking up. He doesn't like being called Mr. Arany, or worse, just Arany. That's rude and he doesn't stand for it. ]

One moment, please.

[ One moment ends up being about a minute longer before he turns the pad around and shows her- while keeping fingers on it, so pages can't be turned. It's a decent theoretical framework for what he was thinking- it helps barriers are a speciality of his. ]

If I make the enchant too complicated with too many words, it can sometimes explode!

[She has to be careful at how the rune is exactly written. Or else it may not have the desired results or it might overload itself. How many times has this happened? ...She's not telling.]

But I don't mind making something for you.

[ As Urtz's smile widens, Ando's mouth grows thinner. He....he had forgotten. Menial tasks are so beneath Maa-ster Hibiki that she finds herself stymied by them! There had been an unfortunate incident once, when he could not be by her side, where she failed to maa-ssemble a cardboard box.....!!!!

His hooves curl into fists. You maa-n do it, Maa-ster Hibiki. You maa-n do it.

Hibiki, for her part, is giving this spell her absolute concentration. The sudden dropping of pieces is - unusual, to be certain - but when she glares at the pieces for daring to disrupt her uncertain mental flailings deep thinking, she is struck by inspiration. Her lips curl. ]

Reparandam.

[ The glow of the spell is complemented by a golden halo around her hand - an illusion cast for effect. The two pieces slide in place, hold.

Ando sheds a single, proud tear. ]

[She says nothing upon being corrected, merely filing it away as a mental note. Though she does wait a little while for Rex to finish, ultimately she goes off to answer whatever questions anyone else might have, though she never lets Rex out of her peripheral vision. Once the pad goes up it's like she never left.]

Attempting to take the spells properties and rework it into something else? An interesting proposal.

Well then, with a risk like that, I think it's only fair to provide you with some kind of gift in response. Is there anything you want?

[Once it seems Hibiki has got it downpat, the special effects calm down and Urtz steps aside to let everyone in the class see her perform the spell. She then claps, smiling much less maliciously at her so-called auditor.]

An excellent performance, Miss Shikyoin, bravo. Would you like to continue?

[ Hibiki smirks, all smooth again. ] No, the rest may be left to you.

[ She could do it, of course. If she felt like it. But: ]

As a preview of what to expect upon my revolution, this much of a live show is sufficient.

[ Fix it soon, though. She's having trouble staring at the broken pieces now that they aren't her problem any more. LET US DROP THE CURTAIN ON THIS WHOLE ORDEAL. ]

Ah, a demo presentation, then. Very good. I shall take it from here as per your request.

[Casting a visible version of the hand spell she mentioned previously, Urtz begins making her way through the pieces, fusing them together. Glamorous visual effects fly off of the pieces as they fuse together, and it's not long at all before the professor has successfully mended the dresser back to its original form. In fact, one could argue it actually looks shinier than it did when she first brought it in.]

There we are. I hope each of you found this informative.

[She then turns to Hibiki, removing her hat and bowing.]

And I hope you found my little show entertaining. I could have mended the pieces back together normally, but I saw little fun in that.

No knowledge is a dead end, but rather all information is a road of many paths.

[ He says that like it makes any actual sense for a person to say, like... in real life. ]

Admittedly I think this iteration of the spell might suffocate the user but it's a first draft.

Will these spells be practical in terms of our own use or will you provide a subject to build them around?

[He muses as he sees it, before summoning forth one of his butterflies - raising a hand and letting it flutter on a finger.]

Actually - I find myself wondering if I might have already learned such a thing...though, of course, I had no formal training. But...

[The butterfly takes off, quietly flying over to the chalkboard and picking up a piece of chalk in it's spindly limbs, coming back with barely any effort and dropping the item into his hand.]

...As you can see, my butterflies are able to essentially do the same thing, so - perhaps I came to this same sort of spell without ever truly learning of it? Is such a thing possible?

[ Hibiki smirks at this display. Some of it might actually be genuine. ] I look forward to witnessing your continued instruction.

[ And with that, she knows it's time to return to her box seat. But she may actually seem more interested in watching now. Just not in the lesson (that falls to Ando).

There had been merit to auditing in person after all. The person most of interest in this classroom......just might be the professor. ]

[There may be one thing Puella had been thinking about recently.]

[Puella had been keeping a magazine ad around with her, that was still at her desk right now. Which in a split second, suddenly appeared in her hand. Urtz did say that she didn't want to keep the class waiting for long, after all.]

[It was an ad for the latest, fanciest model of scooter. The rental ones around school were fine and all, but nothing beats owning your own personal one. Maybe she could even get that enchanted. Or a purely magical one would be fine too!]
