I would conjecture that the stories remain the same due to the Veil. I was also tricked by its hidden truths about Dragons, and all aspects of the Outlands, until a mere year-and-a-half ago. It seems that those in charge of protecting the mundane world from the supernatural have done an excellent job, as one would be counted insane if they began spouting stories of draconic creatures breathing something other than fire or spewing orange flowers.
