[player plot] Kagerou Daze

WHO: OTA, some prompts semi-open per sign-ups
WHERE: Side A: Outlands, Side B: Daybreak
WHEN: Forward dated to May 23
WHAT: See details here
WARNINGS: Death and dying, and everything that comes along with it
NOTES: In your toplevel, please note whether you're playing on side A or side B! The plot will ICly take place from May 23-24, and players can continue to sign up throughout the month, partnered with an NPC student. Characters who do not sign up are still free to get involved with Side B prompts, so your character does NOT have to die to play with this plot. For any further questions, please direct them here. I will be NPCing Saeru and posting with [personal profile] kazokun

i. dawn, 5/23, open to all
[ The faintest of tremors runs through the ground. For a campus situated in the mountains, this may be scary, but hardly unexpected— if the tremor did not come with a surge of mist, black fog hissing like steam under pressure, filtering out from cracks in the pavement just outside of Theater Lenormand.

> Investigate the source, and potentially discover more about what happened, and what to do about it. There will be people who would need the help. ]

ii. throughout 5/23, closed to side A/B
[ It happens swiftly, quietly, without fanfare. Perhaps you're just minding your own business, waking up and seeking out breakfast, yawning and sidestepping before you crash into another student passing by, when there is suddenly a knife in your side, a twist and white hot pain. Perhaps you're hurrying to class, hear the shatter of glass, and make the mistake of stopping in place to look; you don't even know what fell on you, just that it was falling fast, it was heavy, and it was deadly. Perhaps you've caught wind of the rumors by now, suspicions circulating around a certain boy who is always in the wrong place at the wrong time. Avoid the boy, they say, he's bad luck. But maybe you mean to seek him out.

> Initial deaths can be played out or handwaved; let me know here if you want Saeru in a thread, otherwise feel free to NPC them yourself! ]

iii. 5/??, Kagerou Daze, closed to side A
[ You remember dying. At least, you think you died. It's hard to tell, because in the midst of a blink, the world dissolves around you and rebuilds itself into something... familiar. Maybe not familiar by sight, but the uncanny familiarity is still there, nudging at fears and worries long buried. What happened? Is there anybody here? How do you get out...

> Create your own world and make your escape! Once your character escapes from their world, they will find on their possession a small iridescent stone. ]

iv. 5/24, Daybreak Academy, closed to side B
[ What happened? You remember... dying? There was somebody else with you, you're sure of it, but they're nowhere to be seen. It could be hard to tell for some, but thick, clotted blood or a glance at your watch may be hints that 5-10 minutes have passed since you were last aware of things. Maybe you hit your head, because there's a faint hissing sound whispering at the back of your mind, like white noise, easily ignored.

There is no immediate or glaring indication that a Snake lies dormant in you, unless you're naturally attune to such things. The new power you've been granted may also come instinctively or not, a gift from the Snake housed within you.

> Have fun with your new powers! It was worth it, watching your friends get killed, right? ]

misc, not a real prompt.
[ For Side A characters who keep the stone on them after their escape, it grows steadily hotter the closer they are to their Side B partner. Once both partners meet and touch the stone at the same time, please let me know here!

For Side B characters, a toplevel regarding the final Saeru fight will be posted sometime on 5/15, to allow for investigation and IC discussion before confronting the daemon. ]

[Closed to Nana]

[Yuya's day is like any other, if more restless from the nightmares screwing up his ability to sleep. Maybe all the stress lately is getting to him.

He adjusts his bag as he swings around the corner, students that he passes by getting little attention.]

[Heat Haze | 3-way thread with side A]

[He died... is this hell? Something instinctually doesn't feel comfortable about where he is, even though he hasn't opened his eyes yet.

He should move eventually, though, and after a moment he forces himself to peek around while feeling his chest for the wound.

Where is he?]

[Yuya stares at the blood sitting stark on his white school shirt, until he hears the yelp and it makes him snap to attention all at once. Someone's here.

He scrambles up, but he's forced to stop when pain shoots through his face and hip and he doubles over to grip his nose. Ow, what was that?

He looks up a second time, slowly.]
Kano...?

[He didn't expect to see anyone he knows. He rises to his feet and tries to walk to Kano instead, having missed what happened the first time, at a trance-like pace. Is it really Kano?]

[Nana has been... having a time of it. She had a deeply disturbing vision; one of Yuya covered in blood, in her arms. She woke up screaming.

Now, she's exhausted. She looks tired as she walks next to Yuya... and under that is a deep, abiding unease. It makes her distracted. She looks sideways at him, and then tilts her head.]

Yuya, maybe we should hurry back.

[personal profile] hippocarnival 2019-05-03 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Huh? [Yuya looks up to Nana, blinking slowly.] Hurry back where? There's still one more class.

[Did she forget? Actually, not that he looks at her, she doesn't look all that good.] Are you sick? Maybe you should skip yours, actually...

[Yuya stops when he bumps into the barrier, blinking in bewilderment before he slowly reaches up to press both hands flat against it.

He doesn't think about it for long, because he turns his attention to Kano and thus, follows where Kano points to all the blood on his shirt.]
I...

[Even without a gaping hole on his chest, the memory of it is so fresh and raw and taking even a moment to have to explain it makes the whole thing come back in too vivid detail. A shudder runs through Yuya's whole body and tears well in his eyes.] Died. I died, I'm dead!

[He twists his hands in his shirt, pulling it as he sinks to his knees and sits back on his heels. Yeah, there's no way he survived it, no way Nana wouldn't have saved him if she could and he would have woken up in the infirmary or something--not here. She got away, didn't she? He died and he doesn't know what happened to her after.

... Is Kano dead too?]

It hurts. [It's not descriptive. Yuya covers his mouth, gagging himself as he tries not to get sick from the thought.

He doesn't understand the question about feelings. Ghosts have all those emotions, don't they? Hollows did.]

They were dressed like, like any student. I didn't--[Hadn't expected it, and it's really overwhelming.

He buries his face in his hands, sobbing.]

Tonight's already been... a weird night. He woke up that evening, earlier than usual, walking along with one of the older night students and chatting idly, when he'd felt the shove at his back-- a slam more like. Three stories of spiraling steps around, and he remembers going over the railing, breathless, and feeling the student with him grasping at his shirt.

He remembers the rush of air and hearing the scream of the student going down with him. He remembers shifting fast to bones, hoping to pull himself together last minute, shift back to something whole and catch the one going down with him. He remembers hitting the floor in a daze, hearing something, and pulling together to find... nothing. Nothing but blood. He barely has the presence of mind to look up, but by the time he does, there's nothing there either.

Unsteady, he does the same thing he always does in these sorts of situations, when he's left with a death that leaves no trace. He picks himself up and he keeps moving.

Caving | For Toki

[personal profile] unpocoloco 2019-05-04 11:31 am (UTC)(link)
Whatever classes this particular building is used for, it appears that class is over. Not everyone likes to run their job into the night and he doesn't blame those people. Still, it was the closest set of classrooms and he'd really hoped he might he might find one of the faculty members, if not the missing student themself.

It's chance at all that he's running into anyone. The boy's probably lost or something. He calls out anyway.

"Toki! Toki, I'm sorry, do you have your translator on you? I'm looking for someone. Older student, long sandy hair--" He's speaking a little faster than he normally would with this boy, still a little jittery off... whatever just happened. He describes the missing student as best he can, giving a name. Unfortunately, Toki almost definitely hasn't seen them, translator or no.

Also unfortunate is the building's odd creaking.

With The Fishes | For Ekkehardt

[personal profile] unpocoloco 2019-05-04 11:34 am (UTC)(link)
He's already so drained. Multiple shifts in one night, with injuries. If he could pass out, it really wouldn't have taken this much effort. Unfortunately, he can't. But he can feel pain.

He hears the thump of another dropping body-- some passing student-- but the fire extinguisher slams to the back of his skull before he can look. It's only a miracle that keeps it from cracking. He drops to the floor, dazed, and the extinguisher is thrown to the ground before him seconds after. His attacker wastes no time. Tight cord winds around his ankles, his legs, and then he's yanked backwards. He scrambles on instinct but finds no grip on the tile floor-- another stain there, no body. He's dragged through a doorway, kicked down a shorter set of stairs. Of course it doesn't kill him, nothing's killed him all night, but it hurts. He groans, still pushing up onto his hands faster than someone living might, but it's still only to see what the other end of the rope's been tied to; a gym weight.

"Wait, what--" The figure, with their back turned, drags both the weight and him to the pool's edge. There's a roughness to those movements, like the person is either frustrated or, well, committing a murder. The moment he's still Héctor reaches to try and remove those ropes, a mistake when his hands are then yanked back behind him. He almost calls for help, mouth opening... but then he doesn't. He takes a breath instead and in a second he's shoved in the pool and sinking.

He looks up as he goes, trying to see the face through the rippling water and burning chlorine, but it's impossible to make out. He waits until what he's sure is just long enough and then releases that breath, air bubbling to the surface. The figure there stays, waits longer, then at last turns away. He watches then as the pool cover closes over him. He can hardly believe this is happening. Thankfully, he doesn't see the figure returning. He starts working on untying himself.

He doesn't know how long that takes, but he manages to get his feet undone. A shame, because if he could get his hands free he could have used that rune to call for Imelda long ago. Then again, with something like this, maybe it's better he doesn't call anyone. And so, next comes the part where he tries to kick through pool's cover. It's not going well. At most, he's making an enormous racket.

He limps back, unseeing. The hissing in his head is no different than the ringing in his ears. He sees Imelda's blood, hears Imelda's voice, nothing else.

He doesn't realize where he is, where he's gone, until her door is creaking open before him and it's her things spread out, not his, that catches the light of the hall. He stumbles in. There's the bed where she slept, a blanket from home neatly folded at the end. There are her things, some mementos from students, some gifts sent from home, letters. There are photos. Her parents. Her brothers. Coco. Their daughter. Their orphaned daughter. His finger bones shake as he reaches for that frame now.

"Mrrow?" He stops, fingers hovering, then turns. Pepita's there, her grey and striped self, not the towering Outland beast she is. She sits in the doorway and meows again.

"...She's not here. She's gone, Pepita. Go home."

Pepita gets up and walk in, closer to him. He shakes his head, stepping back, bumping into and bracing upon the dresser.

"Pepita, she's gone. She's gone, she's really, really gone. You can leave now." The cat yowls again, plaintive, questioning.

"She's not coming back, please just- please- go... go..." His knees clack upon the floor as he drops. The sobs come and they don't stop, and this time Pepita doesn't glare at him, hiss, or even yowl for her return. With a nudge of her head, she pushes her way into his arms. He gets up with her and walks to the edge of the bed and cradles her just like that, weeping into her fur as she purrs to soothe them both.

Time blurs. At some point he managed human-ness again, but only in form. His eyes are still blank, face still streaked. At some point after that he realized the power he had now. It had been in a little box on her dresser. He hadn't expected it. He'd expected it here even less. Now, he holds the wedding ring between his fingers, spinning it idly. Again and again he replays the memories like a film reel, watching his own life, her life, appear before his eyes. Beyond the end of the bed he sits at is an altar and his younger, happier self looks into her eyes with love and promises forever as the priest promises only until death. But he hears a sound not a part of that vision and he blinks out of it without looking over to the open door.

He croaks, "If you're looking for my wife, she's not here."

Pepita, upon the bed and at his side, sits up alert. There are a number of other items of Imelda's spread out on the bed behind them.

His mentor has half-joked time and time again that he has a sense for those in trouble, some unerring instinct to lead him to the lost and wounded. He has a knack for finding things - and people - in distress.

There's banging coming from the pool and there really shouldn't be. Even though the Quarters are open 24 hours, lanes are generally covered when they're not in use, and the covers are solid, to prevent accidents - so someone who falls onto it won't be entangled in it, even if it sinks a little under their weight.

Solid covers provide an inconvenient obstacle. The usual method, withdrawing it with spell command or switch, is too slow. Still, he has ways to work around that.

Héctor will hear the sound of footsteps approaching before bandages made of crimson light weave into the cover above him and yank it upwards. Ekkehardt pushes it up higher and then slows its fall, to give him time to work; more magic.

He can't really get out of breath, but he seems it anyway. He doesn't bother to vocalise his surprise or confusion at seeing Héctor there; he just burns up another spell and yanks him out of the water, and then catches him before he falls.

"We do tend to meet in situations that endanger your health, it seems," he remarks, dry as ever.

He stills at the sound of footsteps, without any idea who it could be. At least, for the split second before he sees the magic of this bandages. Sure enough, there's Ekkehardt. He does his best to swim upwards, towards the edge. It's graceless but he doesn't care. Ekkehardt's spell is faster still and at last he breaks the surface.

He leans a bit into Ekkehardt's grip, getting out a cough or two before he turns up a wry grin. He doesn't need to breathe but it certainly feels better to do so.

"In my defense," He says, "I wasn't technically in danger this time. Just very, very uncomfortable." He coughs one more time. "Thank you."

Toki isn't lost really. He'd just come in here, at night, for... something he can't remember. It will come to him. It's very likely he was taking a walk with his cat and she ran off. Probably into this building. Unfortunately for Héctor, Toki is less apt to be using the translation software at night because he doesn't expect to run into that many people who don't at least speak French.

"Héctor? Wait, wait!"

The man sounds a little panicked, and there's definitely something wrong. Toki takes his phone out and starts the program, only to catch just the end of Héctor's rambling. He recognizes the student's name; Toki thinks that guy might be a friend of Bob Asano's. Though, he hasn't seen that student lately.

"No. Héctor, good?"

He's trying to ask if eveything's okay, but it's not. One of the walls gives off a loud crack. Something was happening.
unpocoloco: (Oh no)

[personal profile] unpocoloco 2019-05-04 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
He tries to at least slow down once he's asked to. It's not slow per-se, but it's slower. He slumps at the answer. He thought so. No one's seen them, no matter who he stops to ask.

"Me? Oh, yeah, I'm- I'm fine! I'm fine--" The crack cuts off his words. He has just enough time for his eyes to widen, for him to take a breath, and then quickly shove out on instinct.

"MOVE! GO!" He shouts, praying for Toki to use that inhuman speed of his right out the door or at least out of the way, because in the the next moment he's gone under a crumpling roof, wood splintering and cement crashing down.

The sound is deafening. Dust flares up and lights flicker. His consciousness doesn't waver a moment. His ability to think certainly wavers though. That's a lot of pain. A lot of pain all at once, the rubble is heavy and some bit of wood or steel has pierced through and jammed itself up under his rib cage, minor cuts left and right. But more important...

"To-Toki...?" His voice rasps. Oh god, he hopes the boy's not dead. He starts to move, trying to push bits off of him, ignoring the blood.

[Nana's pale. Not white as a sheet, but exhausted and didn't sleep well. She's walking a little slowly, and runs her hand over her face. Her sigh, when it comes out, has a rattling edge to it.]

No... I'm fine. I just didn't sleep well. I was just thinking that... we should hurry, so we're not late.

[Nevermind that she makes no sense, saying that.]

As Héctor shouts at him to run, everything slows for him. He has time to think about this, but he knows he can't get Héctor out with him. He may have tried if he knew Héctor was already dead and he only had to worry about how much a skeleton would weigh. As it stands, the only thing he can do is run like he was told to.

The building is coming down around them. The cracks and rumbling are slow and drawn out; horrible loud continuous noise. As he approaches the door, dust swirls in a haze, drifting up from the floor where pieces of the building have tumbled down. When he makes it outside, he turns to watch the remaining parts of the structure crumble down in on themselves. He left Héctor in there.

Toki wants to head right back in, but he wouldn't be any help alone. He'll come back for you, Héctor, but he needs help. He runs off to find the nearest person and tell them what happened.

Fortunately for Toki, he didn't have to go far to find someone. The racket of the building coming down had attracted the attention of one of the nearby faculty members. Valvatorez was headed over at a sprint as it was, his cape billowing out behind him as he ran... and it wasn't long before he caught sight of Toki running away from the sound of the crash... clearly looking in distress.

"Toki! Are you all right?! What happened?!"

[personal profile] yokeye 2019-05-04 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"Professor Valvatorez! It's Héctor! He's still in there in! You have to help!"

He points to the building, which is unnecessary and it's obvious that's what he's talking about. But he's panicking, and Héctor may be dead, and he just left him there. Assuming Valvatorez will follow, Toki runs back to the building.

But then...
