Sword in the Stone

Who: "Arthur Bell", Puella Tempus, Rex Arany, Kokoro Belmont, Jolyune Cujoh, David Xanatos
What: Investigate and downplay the Sword in the stone
Where:England
When: June 17-18
Warning: None?

The vampire was noticeably less than pleased about being told as the adult he gets to play guide to literal children, especially given there's a six hour gap he would be completely out of commission, the downside of his condition. Well, he'll have to deal with it and there is at least one other adult around - and if he must, he suppose he could contact some friends if trouble arises.

Everyone was given the brief run down, the location - the history of Caliburn for those who didn't grow up on the legend, and their cover - members of the academy's history department doing a study. And yes - they can give pulling the sword out a go, but most importantly they have to make sure having the artifact around is both safe and to discourage too many curious sword-yankers.

It's probably not the best idea to let Jolyne know about any sort of authority figure here being out of commission for some time while in a totally unfamiliar city. Probably.

Which is exactly why she's immediately wandering out the second she gets a chance to in order to go explore what she can and make a general annoyance out of herself. Like casually using a piece of her own string to see what are in someone's pockets.

You know, for science and totally not looking to see if there's something interesting there instead.

Kokoro cleared her throat. "When you say run, I presume we're to prepare for rulership candidates more hostile than curious tourists."

She nods. "We'll do what we must. Do you expect it to happen now that we're here?"

[ Draw, pardner! ]

While Rex was quite interested in the actual task they were there for, it would really be a wasted opportunity not to attempt a private project in the meantime. Well aware of Arthur's downtime, he used it to slink away to exactly where they were supposed to go. Just when the place wasn't supposed to have anyone there- too early. Mundane security

He had to try. He's a chosen one. There has to be some sort of privilege to it, not just the honour of more anxiety than usual. It's with a stellar lack of confidence he wraps his hand around the hilt of the legendary sword and gives a half-hearted tug and a sigh when it doesn't slide out smooth as velvet. He doesn't bother using any strength more than than that. If it was meant to come out it would have come out with the slightest touch.

Defeated. For now.

He wouldn't be Rex without a backup plan. Specifically, introducing the Hero Medal to the sword. Or the stone. Whichever one made the choice. He hardly thinks it likely he's the rightful king of England (though it is possible, who knows who his father was and for that matter, where his mother came from) but he's some sort of chosen one and a legendary weapon of some description is supposedly destined for his hands. Maybe he can arrange a loan.

Anyone who followed him or had plans of their own may thus discover Rex squatting close to the sword, apparently muttering to himself, though the gaps to listen don't make it seem like a stream of consciousness. Then again, Rex is very hard to sneak up on, between paranoia, sharpened awareness and warding around himself. Might be he catches someone before they catch him.

[ On the Job ]

When it comes to the mission they're meant to be doing, Rex is diligent, efficient and his usual glum self. He's wearing a pair of glasses he wasn't before they got there, which do the scanning and recording and etc. that a consummate wizard scientist would be. He might not take rules very seriously, but duties are something entirely different. He's going to scan every inch of the cathedral and its grounds.

Kokoro salutes seriously. "All right. So we guard and find some way to secure it and ward off tourists. Anything else?"

Rex had actually put a great deal of thought into what he would say if it seemed like this had even the smallest chance of working.

The spirit of the medal on the other hand, in the way she does, speaks from the heart in the voice of fate directly to whomever she wishes to hear's spirit. It 'sounds' like a young woman but in the tone of a grandmother excited to speak to her rarely seen grandchild and suitably says, "Good morning! Are we ready to face the day after that nap?"

Rex's carefully worded plea for help is blown out of his mind by the cheery and casual greeting. He slaps a hand over his chest like covering the mouth of someone blurting out obscenities in the presence of The Queen. "I apologise for my companion's casual tone-" He's cut off by more of that wonderfully golden voice and Rex is mortified. "Friendly tone! We're looking for help, so it's only right we're friendly."

Plans. They don't survive contact with fate, be that the abstract concept or a trinket that embodies it.

"Well, we're on a bit of a tight schedule, but we can chat as much as you like, can't we Hero?" Rex instinctively takes a breath to correct the medal and insist it calls him Rex instead of 'Hero', but she never listens and anyway, it might not be a bad idea to make it clear that's his title.

"I'd be honoured to converse with a storied spirit, but if we might complete our business first?" The medal predicts Rex's next words and they end up saying them simultaneously. "The fate of the world is at stake."

Rex is really, really trying his best to keep a dignified expression instead of grimacing. How exactly all those noble heroes since the dawn of time have managed to keep themselves from throwing her into space is beyond him.

"I understand that I am not the one meant to take ownership of you... But given the weight of the task I've been set, I would be a fool not to ask-" He considers bowing his head down to the ground when he makes the plea, but he doesn't have it in him. Like his mother, he has a heart that bows to nothing. It's a steadfast pride he doesn't recognise. He does move his hand from the medal (not that it could muffle her anyway) to his heart at least. "Is there any way I can convince you to lend me your assistance, just until your true wielder arrives?"

"And after you say no, do you have any advice for a helpless little Hero instead?"

The medal knows what's up.

"Sorry, did you say Mer-" "That's how we got here, but he insisted. He thinks big." "Sorry but can we go bac-" "You wouldn't happen to know the whereabouts of Carnwennan, would you?" "Whilst I would like to know that, could we perha-" "Or any of our fellow legendary items for that matter?"

Rex, finally tired of being interrupted when he has a very pressing question he absolutely needs an answer to pulls the medal from his chest and squeezes it tight in his fist in a generally sort of threatening way. It's just a gesture of his discontent, as he's pretty sure it would take a lot more than he has to put a dent in something as durable as the medal. She gets the message at least and in truth, likes that Rex has little reverence for her. It's quite nice he calls her his 'companion', for instance. It's one of those 'undead sighing for effect' moment that she goes out of her way to make muffled sounds as if she can't speak just to let Rex know she's shutting up.

"Ahem. Do you meant to say that Merlin is still alive?"

It's one of those points no one seems sure about, after all. Dead, sealed away, immortal in nature, human, fae, daemon, hybrid of any of the above. A figure of mystery more than history.
