Who: Akko + anyone at all!
When: July 1st
Where: All around campus!
What: Akko is already making herself comfortable here on her very first day!
Warnings: Shouldn't be any!

i. aube, 104 + common room

[Day 1 is a doozy, as they say in the industry. That's what's on Akko's mind as she drags her luggage into her room and contemplates everything she's just been told about the Herald's arrival. The most frustrating part of all of it is that it's happening tomorrow and she's too late to help out. But she looks surprisingly determined and optimistic anyway. She'll be ready for next time. And she can help hold down the fort at Daybreak while the majority of their forces are out fighting, right?

Anyway, she takes a good deal of time setting up her room while she thinks about this, leaving the door open to get a breeze going through. One can hear her singing enthusiastically in another language as she lays out all of her clothes, books, and personal items on the desk and bed.

Later, Akko spends some time in the common room's kitchen to make lunch. Except she's an awful cook and you can probably smell the grilled cheese burning from two floors away.]

ii. market square

[Okay so lunch at home was a bust, but the market square has food stalls, and that's all the prompting Akko needs to check it out. But man, there are so many options??? And nothing is particularly familiar food, either. After all, she comes from Japan, and her time in England was spent in a VERY rural location where street foods weren't really a thing. All these sandwiches and salad stalls...where's a girl got to go to get a good piece of dango around here?

That said, Akko is definitely standing in the middle of everything looking extremely awestruck and in the gosh darn way. Maybe help her decide what to eat, or at least guide her out of the way because what's worse than That One Person who stands in the middle of oncoming peoples' way.]

iii. somewhere on the lawn, idk

[It's not all fun and games, though. Akko has to practice to keep her skills sharp, and what better place to do it than just. Outside on the lawn. It's a lovely day, she doesn't see any reason not to.

However it doesn't occur to her that it might be a little alarming to see a person continuously shifting between being human, a ball of brilliant white light, various animals, and then back again. In Luna Nova, that's all people did. Shape shift, heal, repair - alter was the name of the game. One day, it might click that this isn't Luna Nova and the range of skills and races is way more diverse here at Daybreak. Today is not the day.

And if that sight isn't alarming enough, Akko's here to fix that! If you stare long enough without engaging, she just might bounce over your way while beaming.]

[ ruby, indeed, smells something burning in aube. she's heading to the common room kitchen when she smells it, and slowly, she peeks her head in to see what's going on. she's kind of hoping there won't be a fire. ]

Everything okay in here?

Hm? Yeah!

[Akko turns around, holding a frying pan with a black square of unidentifiable food in the middle.]

Why do you ask?

Iiiii think it's kinda burnt...

[ JUST A LITTLE.... ]

Oh, yeah, I guess it's a little well done. ["Well done"] I think I had the heat too high. But that's okay!

[Akko flicks the stovetop off and sets the pan down on an empty burner to begin the process of scraping her meal off of the pan with a spatula. It is, in fact, a process. So she makes pleasant conversation while she works.]

I usually burn stuff on the first try. But I can fix it, so I never actually waste any food.

[ ruby starts getting to work on making herself a ham and cheese sandwich, but she can't help but pause at that last part. "i can fix it."

how. how is akko going to... ]

Are you sure you can fix...that...?

[ Vivi is honestly used to weird things happening, so he doesn't mind. He has an armful of books - clearly he had other goals at some point - but there's something new and interesting happening, so he's sort of forgotten about it. ]

Huh...?

Oh! Sure! [ This is a trick he's seen in the Outlands, at least - illusion magic, and occasionally fae trickery to entertain children. ] Do I have to do anything...?

[Soon enough, there's a knocking at Akko's door.]

Okay, the singing I could tolerate, especially since you're pretty good at it, but that burning smell is where I draw the line. I live in the room above you, and it disrupted my sleep.

Mhm! I specialize in metamorphosis magic. You know, rearranging energy into different forms? It's mostly used for shapeshifting and sometimes healing, but there are some cool tricks you can pull off once you've been at it a while!

[And she has been at it a while. Sure, Akko still struggles when casting spells on other people and objects, but that's never stopped her from trying. It's all practice in the end. Chariot said practice makes perfect.

So despite the fact that the air smells like burnt bread and cheese, Akko takes a deep breath and focuses on the unappetizing brick of grilled cheese in front of her. As she holds her hands over it, almost as if warming them by a fire, it begins to glow with a white light. The light grows until it's almost too bright to look at, before rapidly dimming to reveal the results of her work.

An edible grilled cheese sandwich. It's dark, but it's no longer burnt. Maybe that's just personal preference. It has nothing to do with the fact that reversing "damage" to objects is difficult and exhausting. Nothing at all.]

Phew... [She shakes the tingling sensation out of her hands, laughing.] Can't fix the smell, though. That'll just take time!

[Akko has purposely picked someone who looks unlike anything she's ever seen before for this exercise. If nothing else, she likes jumping into the deep end of everything she does. Why should practice be any different?]

Nope, you're fine! [She squints at Vivi.] Hm...okay! I've never seen anyone like you before, so here's hoping I can get this right.

[It's not quite illusion magic, something Vivi might be able to tell once she gets going. Her magic is classified as metamorphosis magic and involves dissolving things into pure energy and re-shaping them. So she's aiming to be a jumble of reconfigured organs inside a Vivi-shaped shell. Which sounds grosser than it feels by far.

Akko's form begins to shimmer and glow, morphing into a ball of white light. After a few moments of hovering there, the light warps into an outline, and then solidifies into the closest copy of Vivi she can manage, having only just met him.]

Ta-da! How'd I do?

[How'd she do?]

[When Akko opens the door, she's holding a plate with a perfectly normal (if a tad bit dark) grilled cheese sandwich. It definitely does not look as burnt as it smells.]

Ah, eheh...oops. I probably should have opened a window, huh...

[She ducks back into her room to set the plate down before popping back out to head for the window on the other side of the common room.]

I'm sorry I woke you up! It's crazy you could smell it in your sleep, though. You must have a great sense of smell!

Really? Back home, if the chefs were cooking in the kitchen, my whole family could smell it from half the manor away.

[Weiss is holding a mug full of coffee, seemingly straight black.]

[ ruby is amazed by what she just saw. the burnt grilled cheese suddenly looked brand new, and it smells good, too! she claps a little before she looks back up at akko. ]

That's incredible! I've never seen anything like this before!

[ who needs to be a good cook when you can just do this? ]

My name's Ruby, by the way!

Huh. Maybe it's genetic! [She wrestles open the window to vent some of the smoky smell from the dorm.] You grew up with your very own chefs? That's so awesome!

[Akko's home life was rather humble. The thought of having a team of chefs, having a big huge house, being wealthy at all is. Foreign, but exciting. It doesn't spark any jealousy - quite the contrary, she's happy Weiss could have these rare experiences.]

When I was in Luna Nova, they had chefs working there from all over England, so I really fell out of practice cooking while I was there.

[What she fails to mention is that she was bad at cooking even before she spent 2 years not having to lift a finger towards making her own meals.]

Really? [Akko laughs at how excited Ruby seems to be over this, since it's just sort of something she Does. Pretty much every time she cooks for herself, she burns something and has to "heal" her meal.] And I'm Atsuko Kagari, but you can call me Akko! I just transferred from Luna Nova.

[Surely everyone knows about this school exclusively for Candles that only accepts the students they handpick off their magical monitoring radar. No need for further explanation.]

I suppose, but many of them didn't like the family. There was one who put garlic in everything for some reason, something everyone there but my mother hated. He was fired, of course, but the sheer level of pettiness...

Luna Nova?!

[ no...NO...she's so cool!!! ruby looks so impressed, and she's slightly envious of the other girl now -- luna nova's somewhere ruby wished she could've gone to. if only she'd unlocked her flame sooner. ]

That's amazing!!! How did you like it there? Did you get to do cool magic? Oh, oh! And did you learn how to fight with new weapons?!

Yikes, that IS really petty. I don't mind garlic, but I sure wouldn't want it in everything I eat.

[Like she can't imagine it's good in ice cream, for example? It would be super weird.]

It's weird that everyone but your mother hated garlic though. I wonder if that's genetic, too? Like how cilantro tastes bad to some people?

It was awesome! Chariot really is the best teacher, I bet you'd love her!

[Everyone would love Chariot, she's sure of it. She tries her best to address all of Ruby's questions, but she's honestly really excited to meet someone as enthusiastic about Luna Nova as she is so she kind of rants in between relevant points.]

We learned a lot of cool things, yeah! Chariot teaches metamorphosis magic, which I thought could only be used to shape shift, but she applies it in a lot of super unique ways. For example, you can morph away wounds and damage to certain objects if you can learn to project your flame outwards - like I did with my sandwich! As for weapons, we learned a little about a lot of different combat forms, but it was mostly up to us to seek out combat lessons outside of Chariot's classes. Personally I learned a little archery and a tiny bit about pole arms, but I'm hoping Daybreak can help me learn how to fight more effectively since my training is minimal.

[Adelaide can smell the burning from all the way up in her room. That's kind of the downside of having super sensitive smell.

Whoever burned their food must have really fucked it up, though.

She makes her way downstairs, poking her head into the kitchen.]

Nothing's burned down, right?

Hm? [Akko turns around, holding in her hand a pan with a single square of absolutely incinerated grilled cheese. If this bothers or concerns her, she sure doesn't show it.] Nope, everything's fine here!

[The haze of smoke makes her cough.]

Could you open that window over there, though? I think I let my grilled cheese got a little overdone.

[Oh, that looks bad. Hopefully the pan can be cleaned...]

Yeah, just a little...

[She will go over to open the window, though, taking in a breath of fresh air.]

Are you new to cooking?

Nope! Just out of practice.

[She sets the pan down on an empty burner and gets to work scraping the "sandwich" off with a spatula. It's an endeavor. There is time for small talk.]

I probably haven't cooked anything in about two years, come to think of it. But that's okay! It's still edible.

[This looks like more than out of practice.]

Really?

[Yikes. She's also not sure she'd classify that sandwich as edible. She raises an eyebrow, but she doesn't question Akko.

Much.]

No offense, but it looks a little like charcoal.

Hey! It's not that bad. [Close, though.] As long as the cheese isn't totally burned off - gosh, now that's a pain.

[The food relents, flipping out the pan and bouncing across the counter. Akko holds her hands over the sandwich and breathes deeply. It's tricky, repairing damage to food. If Adelaide can stand to stare at the glowing ball of light it turns into, she might see the pieces of the sandwich separating, redefining, and then reassembling.

If she can't stand to stare into a miniature sun, she'll have to settle with looking at the dark-but-not-nearly-as-burned sandwich in its place.]

Ta-da!

[Okay, she sees what she means by still edible. It's a pretty fascinating little trick - Adelaide's never seen anything like that before, and she looks impressed!

However, she lets out a soft laugh.]

Wouldn't it be easier to just not burn it in the first place? That's pretty cool, though.
