Memory Sharicus - Oh No, not again!

About 8 am on July 15th, Rex does something stupid in his usual genius way. It was meant to be a small, simple test run of a method to scan a person and instantly gain all the data he needed to produce a Phantom.

The small field the spell was meant to spread just kept growing, until popping like a bubble with the most counterintuitive sound of all- two seconds of white noise, sounding as if it was coming from inches away. Not everyone heard it. But everyone who did...

It's a painless process, almost ticklish and instantaneous as numerous coloured orbs fly out from their chest, taking wild curving trajectories that launch them all over the academy and some of Soleil, coming to a sudden stop and hovering silently for just a few seconds.

That's when they start to slowly float towards the nearest possible recipient of the memory they contain, accelerating as they get closer as if thought and mind have a unique sort of magnetism.

It's sort of beautiful to see, really, not that Rex will notice because 60% of his mind is consumed with fear he will get into trouble and the Phantom project will be compromised. On the other hand, the Phantom project could provide the perfect scapegoat. So about six hours after the initial event, he released his latest creation- the Phantom mischief-maker, Waggery!

What a disaster.

Oh, please. Like I thought, he was underestimating me. The runes were completely exposed, so it was child's play to disturb them, even if Myrtenaster could barely hurt it. I'm sure Professor Anderson would have given the runework an F.

[Weiss? Being humble?]

Yup. The runes were all exposed and so sloppy. Your dad reaaaally didn't see that coming, huh?

[ she's actually enjoying picturing how upset he must have been. weiss nailed that exam. she deserves to be here. ]

I don't think he realized that delicate work like that is my area of expertise. My sister chose a more aggressive fighting style, so he probably thought I'd try to follow in her footsteps. I'll admit, I tried at first, but Winter said my current style would work better for my physique.

[The admiration in her voice when she talks about Winter is clear. It seems she really looks up to her sister.]

You do have a really pretty battle style!

[ as for winter... ]

I can tell you really care about her. I felt it in your memories -- she means a lot to you, right?

Uh.

[ That probably answers the question pretty clearly as apparently Rex finds it confusing in itself. ]

I only knew him for a few months as a child. I can't think he'd want to see me again.

[ Of course, Rex could track him down if he wanted to. He can track anyone, anywhere, he can find you no matter how far you run or how well you hide. That's his deal. ]

Winter... After the disaster that was my tenth birthday, she was the only one who still... well, who still tried. My Father stopped with even the token effort he made, my Mother decided to see if she could find the answer to her problems in the bottom of a bottle of wine, and Whitley ended up taking after Father.

But Winter, she never stopped caring. It was a tough sort of love at times, but she always cared. She was the one who would read to me when I had trouble sleeping, and give me advice for my training. Having her for a sister is one of the best things to ever happen to me.

[ ruby listens intently. weiss' family wasn't as kind as she'd thought, which makes her heart hurt for her friend. the way she talks about winter, though, is with so much love and wonder that ruby smiles. ]

I'm really glad she was there for you.

I don't know, if you made a big enough impact on him he might be curious to see how you've grown up.

[She shrugs, before getting curious.]

But with all these memories going around, have you been okay?

[He wonders if he's seen any of hers. Most of them would just...be so, so mundane. She can't fathom Rex actually caring about anything he sees.]

[if Poe could hear them, he'd facepalm.]

If I think about it really, really hard, I think I can! [heeeee, being told they're a genius... This is great. Even memory magic problems make such a great situation!! Memory magic really is the best.] And we have a bag for them already!

[Even the pillowcase gets a happy ending! They reach a hand towards Héctor's face, aiming for where the colorful markings would be if he weren't so fleshy right now.]

Think about...something bad! We're trying to find the bad ones.

Me too. I'm not sure if I'd even be here, talking to you, if not for her. She was the first to go against what Father wanted for us, and she inspired me to follow my own path.

I promise this will stay between you and me.

[He is not about to be a jerk to a child and let her secrets spill. It'd be unfair, especially considering how Grimm learned about it in the first place.]

Wellll, what'd Winter end up doing to defy your dad?

[ Once again he opens his mouth to say some shit but stops. Because he was going to say something about how he's sure no one cares how he grew up or something similar, but Adelaide is still getting the gentle treatment and that includes trying his best not to bum her out entirely. ]

Maybe.

[ But he couldn't stand to outright lie, which would be what saying something positive would feel like to him. So she gets maybe.

And in regards to the question on memories... he rubs the back of his neck and looks kinda flushed and is generally awkward. It's impossible to put into words how some of them have made him feel and he's in the unique position of knowing this was his own damn fault. ]

The black ones seem drawn to me. So it's been. Uhm. Uncomfortable.

[ He suspects that they gravitate to those with similar thoughts to the memory contained within. Or it's a coincidence. ]

...I saw one of yours.

[Grimm's own smile falters for a few seconds. He remembers that. The Nightmare King had evidently mellowed from whatever time that had taken place, but it had happened.]

For what it may be worth, I am sorry you had to witness that. We both are.

[It...was not a nice memory. Grimm is no pacifist and if he was in the Nightmare King's position at the time, he too would have fought back.

But whatever that was...]

He has lost quite a number of memories and it seems they were deliberately taken. I asked to see what he could remember.

[As for this "infection", he had no idea. Just that when it was apparently used on the Nightmare King, he was very, very angry.

Given how he rarely became angry that said something to Grimm.]

[If Adelaide knew about the gentle treatment, she'd have words for him. She doesn't want to be handled delicately. She can handle things!

But she doesn't know, so Rex doesn't get yelled at. For now.

She frowns at that, opening her mouth to say that she's...Sorry. That he's had to see so much of people's worst moments. But then he says he saw one of hers, and her lips press together.

...It's fine. It doesn't matter. Rex won't care.]

...What did you see?

She went and joined the Runeguard. He was far from happy about it, but Winter made it clear that she didn't want to inherit the company anyway. She was busy after that, but she tried to make room in her schedule to check up on me now and then. It probably didn't make my Father any happier that she ended up working with Asami Sato.

His gaze lifts back up, everything coming back into focus with being addressed. He can shake these things far easier with someone there.

Both? ... Ah. I see.

[Not something that was wanted. Presumably. It doesn't matter. They're all at Daybreak to help now.]

It's fine. Better I than someone else.

Has he-- have either of you ever thought about seeing if there's a kind of healer for that memory problem? There are so many things that can be done in this world, people with memory-based magic...

It wasn't a black one.

[ He adds that to make sure she doesn't have any sort of irrational guilt about it.

But you know what he does do? He gently reaches to take one of her hands between two of his. ]

It seemed to be... a normal day. [ His hands squeeze a little. Look at him, doing everything he can to make her feel cared for. ] About your parents.

[ He gives her a moment to process what that probably means in the context of his actions before he adds- ]

I care about you.

[Maybe you shouldn't pawn your problems off on others then, Poe.]

Ha! You're right, we do!

[He starts a little when Wist's little raccoon hands pat at his cheek. Oh. His magic. Right, that was smart, get right at the source. He bobs his head marginally and then closes his eyes. He draws on his power just a bit, enough to stir it without a shift over. Something bad... The Outlands. Losing his familia. The Hollow. Missing Coco so, so much.]

... Is this working?

[Everyone has learned a valuable lesson today.

When the energy wakes up, Wist's pupils expand so that there's only a thin sliver of color visible, and after a pause, they give Héctor's cheek a precocious pat-pat.]

We'll find out! Thank you! Down, please!

[They're bad at directing others, so it's for the best if they can scramble about on their own...if Héctor decides it's wise to put The Baby down, anyway. Time...to hunt!!]

[He cannot express how strange it is to get a pat by those paw-hands, but he manages not to comment. Down the baby goes. He'll follow to make sure no one steps on them.]

Don't go too fast, alright? I'm a lot slower than most.

[He scoops up that pillowcase and readies it.]

[....

Grimm shakes his head.]

I do not know how possible it would be. Those who have come before me have tried, of course. But the damage is extensive and he is long-lived. There may be some that are gone forever.

[And separating his mind from Grimm's may be difficult. There is a line that runs between the two of them, but in the end they are also one in the same. Master and Clan.

Not without taking the Heart itself.]

[He's nodding his head again. There are, indeed, a lot of things one can't come back from. Not the same. He was lucky. He's thought it a thousand times despite his bad luck, things could have been so much worse.

The wry tone is met with a rueful smile. Not much choice, no.

But then comes that quiet pride. He's reminded of one of the many reasons he admires this man.]

Have I ever mentioned what an incredibly cool person you are, Ekkehardt?

[Probably.]

I understand.

[And despite the horrific scene a moment ago, he does feel a pang of sympathy.]

I'm sorry. That's a difficult sort of pain to deal with.

[He knows how precious memory can be.]

Oh, don't worry lad. I know you're not the type.

[James is a pretty good kid, after all.]

And I think I remember exactly what you're talking about. The time I got summoned by a couple of students trying to get their pizza, right? You don't have to worry about it, that was about five years ago now.
