HERALD OF NIGHT - A NEW RESIDENT

The raid on the fell facility was a success and Daybreak had secured a new resident, of sorts. The larval creature known as the second Herald of Night had been recovered. While there was a strong element that would see it put to the sword, the greater whole of Daybreak’s population and extended forces felt the Herald should be observed - a once in a lifetime chance to attempt to unravel the mysterious forces behind the Heralds.

And thus, after waking up, it is now roomed within the Citadel, in a room of substantial size littered with toys and various other playroom comforts. It is free to wander around, although for now due to the uncertain nature of it visitors are not permitted to enter its playroom, simply observe and communicate from the outside.



The Herald communicates telepathically, and is very curious about its new environment and those around it. It will constantly barrage those who enter its playroom with questions, and any answer even remotely open-ended will be followed up with “Why?”

In this post, characters may interact with the Herald, answering questions and, if desired, donating toys and other comfort items for its inspection. Below are a list of some questions it may ask that you may fill out, if there’s any opportunity you may also assume the Herald asks “why” after your answer.

Reira will probably bring her toys, and play with the Herald a bit, and ramble an awful lot about how she doesn't actually know what each toy is for, but a lot of them feel nice, or look nice, and that's probably part of the point.

Really it's probably very apparent that Reira is rather like a smarter, far less deadly herald baby at this point.

What is a name? It's the thing people call you that's special, I guess. Some people say someone else has to give you a name, but since I made one up, I think you can make one up too.
Do I have a name? I don't know, but maybe you can make one too!! You just have to try different words, and if it sounds like something you want to be called, then that can be your name! Like how I liked Reira.
Do you know where we are? We're at 'Daybreak'. It's...ummm...it's a big 'school' place.
Do you know why I’m here? The school doctor said, a lot of bad people wanted to make you do lots of bad things, so we had to get you out. It's not good to make people do things they don't want to, so that's important. Now I guess you get to just learn about things, and not have to do something a lot of bad people tell you to do.
Why are you here? The teachers said we could say hello now! So I wanted to say Hello. You're very nice, I think, so I'm glad I did.
What do you think about Earth? It's nice I guess. It's big, but it's also very small. A lot of things are the same in it, even though everyone says it's not.
What do you like about it? Um, there's not as much dangerous things I guess. I used to have to move to lots of different places in the Outlands, and I couldn't stay very long ever, but in this place I've been able to stay a lot longer, so I get to see more nice things. There's lots of nice things here, like cheesecake, and soft toys, and animals that don't want to eat you.
What do you dislike about it? Mnh...it's got a lot of rules I think. Like 'don't go on the roof', or 'don't eat too much sugar'. They're supposed to be important rules to make sure you don't get hurt, but I still don't think being on the roof is bad.
What do you think about the Outlands? There's a lot of places in the Outlands. It's very very big, and has lots of different things...some of them are nice, and some of them aren't, and they're really dangerous. Those are all the places the Sprites would take me away from, so that I wouldn't get hurt.
Do you like it? I like some parts. The parts where I got to stay for a while were nice. They had things like griffons, or big mushrooms...or candy houses, and different colour shapes that became different shapecolours.
Do you not like it? I don't like some parts I guess. Even the safe places could be bad, because there was no one there, or something dangerous was almost going to happen.
Do you know why I exist? No. But I don't think that's an important thing. I think you're supposed to make your own reason.
Do you know why you exist? I don't know my reason either. It's okay not to know though I think. Because even if you don't know, you can still learn lots of things, and do lots of things, and be happy, and help others be happy. And that makes you happy back- because it's not a real happy if you've made someone hurt. I know, because I can feel the difference.

Gil has on a telepathy blocking helmet, and is outside the chamber setting up complex scanning apparatuses. Honestly his first reaction was to dissect the damn thing, but looking into the room through the one way mirror, he has to admit that it is, in a weird sort of way, kind of cute. Who's a good little sin against all that is pure and holy in this world? Who's a good abomination against humanity and reason? Yes! You are!

He still wants to learn everything he can about it, though. So he's going for indirect scanning before attempting to interact with it directly, to see exactly what it is they're dealing with. Scanners for the whole electromagnetic spectrum, gravity detectors, thaumometers for scanning magical distortions, chemical analyzers of the air in the room to see if it's giving off any gases, and other esoteric scanning devices are starting to make the observation chamber feel a bit cramped.

Gunvolt's not really sure what to bring as a gift, but he brings a cute stuffed dinosaur for the little one. He knows he's not really good with kids either, but given the similar circumstances Monarch came from, he wanted to make an effort here too.

Does that mean anything? It's uh... a nickname. I fight with a gun, and can use lightning.
What’s your name? ...Gustav, but no one really calls me that. I just prefer GV.
What is a name? A name's what you're given for people to call you. Though even if you're given one, you can go by another if you want to.
Do I have a name? ...I don't know of one, not yet. Maybe we can figure out a good one for you before long.
Do you know where we are? Daybreak Academy, a school for people to learn magic and more with the intent to save the world.

Why are you here? ...To get stronger, to help save the world from Nightfall, and so I can make Asimov proud.
What do you think about Earth? It's home. It's not perfect, but I love it. There's a lot of work to do to make it a better place, and to do so without hurting people is hard. But it's worth it.
What do you like about it? Its natural splendor, the wide oceans, the mountains, the warm breeze. The good people, and the kindness in it. The sheer achievement in the things humankind has done.
What do you dislike about it? ...It's a bit heavy to get into. But there are bad people out there who do bad things. But I do believe most people are good, and that we can live in harmony with each other.
What do you think about the Outlands? They're vast, incredibly different, and... they're really, so, so much. I've only seen a small portion of them.
Do you like it? ...Not really. But most of the time I ended up in the Outlands, it was to fight bad people who wanted to hurt people I cared about.
Do you not like it? I haven't liked many places I've been, but... I'm not going to write off the whole thing. I haven't seen enough of them. I've heard the Outlands can be quite beautiful in places.

Gunvolt doesn't really mind. Though the Herald isn't... exactly what he'd call a normal kid, he's... actually quite relieved that Daybreak is going to give the creature a chance. And hopefully, with the right positive reinforcement, the Herald could choose to become something else... and hopefully, it could lead a peaceful life.

Grimm brings a stuffed animal for the Herald and while they are not with him, the Troupe Master passes on a gift of candy from the Grimmchild as well.

Who are you? My name is Sinbad ibn Badr al-Ayad.

What are you? I'm part human - and part Djinn from my dad's side... let's see. You probably didn't get much in the way of learning about Djinns: So unlike a lot of other non-humans, Djinns originated in the Earth and are said to be formed from Smokeless Fire. Djinns have different abilities, but generally, they have some mastery over their bodies - changing them on the whim, command of the elements, and the most powerful can manipulate probability, which humans take to mean they can grant wishes.... [His expression darkens for a moment, his thoughts going moody]. There's a little more to it, but let's talk about that another day, okay?

What are you called? Sinbad, or if you wanna get all formal, "Mr. al-Ayad" - the 'al' is part of the name - waaaay too many people drop it, but please call me Sinbad, okay?

Does that mean anything? You're right - names have meaning! Sinbad means "Lord of Sages," and it's the name of a legendary sailor and explorer in the 1001 Nights, ask someone to read it to you, it's really good. And - dad said it's also the name of the only real friend he had while he was enslaved.

What is a name? Some people get names because the person who named them likes the sound it, like to honor someone with the same name, or because they like the meaning. For example, My ism or given name is Sinbad, and dad said it's named for one the only human friends he had before he was freed. The Nasab or Patronymic - that's the father-derived name, so in this case, it's "ibn Badr." "ibn" is Arabic for 'Son of,' so my dad's name is Badr, which means "Full Moon." Laqab is the last name, family name, "al" is roughly "The", and "Ayad" means "Blessing". So, roughly, my name means "Lord of the Sages, son of the Full Moon the Blessed." And there's your Arabic lesson for the day!

Do you know where we are? We're at Daybreak Academy, in a country called France. It's a pretty old school on top of some mountains, where people can freely use magic and be themselves without being worried.

Do you know why I’m here? I think it's because there are a bunch of things that wanna use you as a weapon, and they decided to rescue you.

Why are you here? I wanna get to know you better, and make sure you're not feeling lonely. If you're asking about why I'm at daybreak... well, I'm looking for my father and mom insisted that I enroll in a school so I can have a safe place to be in while I search.

What do you think about Earth? It's... wow, it's beautiful. The world's full of bad people, dirty places, and bad things are always happening, yes - but there's far more good than bad. People just going about their day, celebrating, trading, laughing, all that.

What do you like about it? If they'd let you go, you need to see the sea - this large vast body of water that goes from the darkest, almost black water with wisps of white foam to the brightest of turquoise, stretching as far as the eye can see until it looks as though it's kissing the sky. As the sun rises or sets, it will dance with ribbons of gold, sometimes reds and purples as well. Then at night? It's all dark; it makes it seem like you're wrapped up in the starry sky, the ink blackness below with thing silver thread from the moon's reflection and the countless stars above.

God - and there are these things... I called them Rukh; they're pure light in the shape of birds, butterflies, or flying fish that weave around everything, showing that everything is alive. Seeing them dancing over the night ocean... it's how can I even describe that?

What do you dislike about it? Well... I don't like snow - it's pretty to look at? But I'm not used to it at all; my hands get numb, my teeth chatter, then I have to put on so many layers and overheat inside so that I'm not freezing outside!

What do you think about the Outlands? It's... much more still than the Earth. I can't feel things as strongly as I do here.

Do you like it? It's beautiful, but in a different way than the Earth, and there's places no one has been to, so there's a lot of unknowns to explore.

Do you not like it? There's no Rukh, no waves, I don't feel things coming, so I'm always feeling off-balanced there.

Do you know why I exist? Well, a bunch of nasty old squid people wanted to make you into a weapon to hurt things. Now, I hope you'll get a chance to decide what you want to do.

Do you know why you exist? I'm gonna let someone else tell you the birds and the bees, but I know my parents love each other - and I was born as a result. As for what I'm supposed to? I want to make things better for people, and I'm trying to figure out how.

What are you called? Many things, by many different people. It would take too long to go through them all, and there is not enough time in the day. Why? Because I do not wish to interrupt your playtime for too many long-winded stories. So, simply call me Professor Valvatorez.
Does that mean anything? It merely means I hold a station of respect at this Academy. While I am normally not overtly formal in all things, I do prefer my students address me as such.
What’s your name? Simply, Valvatorez. It is the name I have always known and used.
What is a name? A name is a thing that people are called to identify them. It can be seen as a part of one's identity.
Do I have a name? I do not know of it. But I suspect one will be given to you in time, or, perhaps, you may choose one for yourself.
Do you know where we are? Yes. This is Daybreak Academy. A school, a place of learning, nurturing, and in its own way, a haven for individuals who do not fit the mold.
Do you know why I’m here? Because you deserve a chance to learn, to grow, and thrive; to become a being of your own identity, through your own choices.
Why are you here? To help you along with that, the best I can. While I will not dictate things to you, I can help be a guide. That, my dear little one, is what teachers are for.
What do you think about Earth? ...It is a wonderful place, even for all of its many faults. It is as much my home as Hades is. Perhaps even moreso now.
What do you like about it? Humankind. They possess so much... potential. Potential for strength, for goodness, compassion, justice, and mercy. Qualities all too often foreign to many Outlanders, and that... is to our loss.
What do you dislike about it? Humankind, as well. While they possess so much potential for good, their potential for cruelty and evil is also great. Part of why I teach, is to get my students to see the futility of evil, to not perpetuate these failings.
What do you think about the Outlands? ...They are as much my home as Earth.
Do you like it? I love them. The Outlands are vast, ever-changing, and constantly in flux. So much to see, so much to enjoy. And they too, possess so much potential for greatness.
Do you not like it? ...What I do not like is how much cruelty is perpetuated needlessly. So many daemons and other creatures are content with destruction and villainy for the sake of it, or for small-minded goals. Too many of them lack real pride or nobility.
Do you know why I exist? I know why you were created. And that was to destroy the Earth and bring upon the Nightfall, as a Herald. But that is why you were "created", not why you "Exist." They are two different things. Very different things. Only you can be the architect of the significance of your own existence. ...That might be a bit much to grasp right now. But one day, I am sure you will understand. For now, it is best to continue asking questions, learning... and having fun.
Do you know why you exist? Not truly, but I exist to fulfill my own will. And my will is to be a guide and help others be the best versions of themselves they can be. ...And in so doing, I also better myself. It is... a very satisfying life I live.

The Herald would sound surprisingly like that of a human infant, except for the fact that its base sound is accompanied at all times by a chorus of nearly inhuman screams of pain and agony torn from the throats of beings beyond human reckoning.

The Herald, in general responds to the scans in no way that any living creature ever has before. The readings are nigh incomprehensible, they don't make sense, they don't match up, and it definitely shattered the thaumometer's core and split the device neatly in two just by virtue of its mere presence. Gil's results could charitably be described as a wide collection of data, broadened especially by the fact that the Herald never reads the same way twice.

While the thaumometer is the most vulnerable, if Gil keeps at it for too terribly long all of his equipment will break. Also, consequently, the telepathy blocking helmet is absolutely useless, the Herald can still communicate with him at will and without impediment and also the helmet will, within the first five minutes, divide itself neatly into quarters and slide off Gil's head.
