Class Log - Practical Uses for Magic in the Modern Day

[It was the first day of class and Urtz was feeling great. Her Magic 101 class had went went and she was sure her Practical Magic class would be even better. Currently she's standing in front of the chalkboard but behind a desk with a stack of syllabuses on it. Whenever a student walks in, she greets each of them politely before asking them to take one as they find a seat they like.

Once it reaches 1 o'clock the door is closed and class can begin.]

Once again, hello everyone. I am a new professor here at this wonderful academy. My name is Lady Urtz Cromwell. If you wish to call me "Professor", I won't stop but you, but Lady Cromwell or Professor Cromwell is preferred. You'll find, both in life and in my class, that a little bit of respect can go a long way.

[She steps out behind the desk and makes her way to the front row.]

Now then, this class is something I came up with on my own. Some of you may see magic as a way to primarily fight again Nightfall. While offensive magic is important, there are many other uses for spells and magic overall. Things that will help you in your everyday life or that can get you out of a problematic situation. For example, one of my personal favorite spells is Et Digitos Magum. This allows you to create a hand of magic which you can control as easily as if it were your own. It can move quite a distance away from you, can't be damaged, and is an excellent way to start making spells your own.

General spells like this will be taught in this class, but a class like this needs to be tailored to its students. So I'd like to hear a little bit from each of you. Your dreams, goals, and the like. I'll try to incorporate ways to help in my lesson plan. Now, if there aren't any questions... [She gestures towards the class.] I'd like to hear from each of you.

[After her class, Urtz can be found in her office writing and typing. She actually got to her office earlier than scheduled and she plans on staying later, so no problems with stopping by late. Anyone is welcome to her office hours, too, even if you're faculty or you aren't in one of her classes.]

[Puella got out from her seat and suddenly there was a rush of wind as she made it to the front of the class. An alarming speed for any child her size. ...When exactly did her hat change? Who knows!] Okay!

Ummm, I don't really think I can really show off most of them anyway without examples. But...

[The hat suddenly changed into more hats. Including one fox mask.]

This one lets me see spooky things, this one helps me find space rocks, and this one I just modified recently - I can jump even higher!

[She puts on a knitted cap that looked kinda like an alien. It made her movements weightless like she was in zero gravity. Or walking on the moon!]

And this one...well...this one is just kinda special.

[She had gone back to the top hat.]

[With each hat Puella shows off, Urtz seems more and more impressed. Being able to craft such unique and useful magical items at her age is very impressive. It seems like this school is even better than she first thought. It almost makes her wish she'd attended it inside of being home-schooled.

Though who knows how that would have worked out.]

Oh my! These certainly are some premium magical items you've crafted. I may have to commission you at some point. Much like yourself, I am quite fond of hats.

You are?! [Fellow hat enthusiasts were hard to come by, she has found out! So it is always exciting to meet a new one.]

[Commissions has been something Puella has thought about before too, actually. Now that getting mist is no longer an issue, and in some ways the kind she gets now even works better. ...Though it has a higher chance of being destructive if she uses it wrong.]

As long as I can write my runes on it, I can enchant almost anything!

...But I rather stick to smaller stuff.

[And simpler spells.]

Indeed I am. The one I have on now is but one of many in my collection. Though I am rather fond of this one in particular.

[Just as Puella seems to be fond of her top hat. Which, honestly, is fair. It's a classic and she looks adorable with it on.]

And regardless, my potential offer still stands, though I will keep that in mind. I can understand wanting to stick with easier projects until you feel comfortable working your way up.

If I make the enchant too complicated with too many words, it can sometimes explode!

[She has to be careful at how the rune is exactly written. Or else it may not have the desired results or it might overload itself. How many times has this happened? ...She's not telling.]

But I don't mind making something for you.

Well then, with a risk like that, I think it's only fair to provide you with some kind of gift in response. Is there anything you want?

[There may be one thing Puella had been thinking about recently.]

[Puella had been keeping a magazine ad around with her, that was still at her desk right now. Which in a split second, suddenly appeared in her hand. Urtz did say that she didn't want to keep the class waiting for long, after all.]

[It was an ad for the latest, fanciest model of scooter. The rental ones around school were fine and all, but nothing beats owning your own personal one. Maybe she could even get that enchanted. Or a purely magical one would be fine too!]

[Quite the ambitious young student. Urtz smiles a Puella, giggling a little at the display.]

You certainly wasted no time at all. Very well. Consider it done.

[hattersgonnahat]

[There was a small but audible gasp. She's getting a scooter?! SHE'S GETTING A SCOOTER. HELL YEAH.]

I'll even make you a second hat then!

[She would have to, at that price.]

I can't wait. I'll be looking forward to them just as you'll no doubt be looking forward to that scooter. Although...you do know how to operate one safely, yes?

[AKA you better wear a fucking helmet or she will mom the shit out of you]

Sure I do!

I delivered some packages around school with them before.

...Probably might do it again soon.

[What are safety helmets?]

Ah, splendid. For a moment I was worried you might not wear a helmet.

[Helmets are hats but hard.]

Uh- [A hesitating pause.] Sure I do.

[...That's probably does not bode confidence.]

[Just this face.]

...it seems I need to alter this deal of ours. Very well. In order to operate said scooter, you must wear a helmet.

That's not fair!

[You can't just change things like that!!]

[Oh how she longs for the days when she thought having to wear a helmet was unfair.]

No, what would be unfair is if I received your hats but did not deliver on the scooter as promised.

I'll...I'll make the hats, but what I do with the scooter is no one's business.

[So there.]

[That actually earns Puella an airy laugh from her professor. It's short and quiet, but very clearly full of mirth.]

If you're trying to bargain with me, you're going to need to do better than that. While I appreciate your determination, you won't get what you want out of life without compromise.

[...usually, at least.]

[This wasn't a compromise though!]

...Well I could just work harder and get a scooter from somewhere else.

[Without lame restrictions.]

[The compromise is she gets to ride the scooter if she wears a helmet.]

By all means. I'll simply purchase one for myself and request Miss Jailbreak provide me with the upgrades you would have received at my behest.

What sort of upgrades?

Nothing you need concern yourself over. After all, you don't want my scooter.

[Yes she is playing this game.]

[Puella squints a little. She gets it, this was just to make her cave in for the ugly helmet.]

Well I could get one upgraded by Ms. Jail too!!

Perhaps. But it would likely take you longer to get this scooter and those upgrades for yourself. And even if you did, what would happen if you got into an accident and injured yourself? Aren't you worried about disappointing someone? Hmm?

[Yeah she's going there.]

[She's going there, but to be fair, Puella can think of a few who might be bothered if she hurt herself.]

I can just catch myself with my magic. It should be fine...

[Honestly, she had already beaten herself up a few times with just the sprint hat alone.]
