Heaven or Hell - Let's rock the courses!
Who: Ky Kiske, students, faculty
What: Learn to speak clearly,
When: Late January
Where: Classroom, Mythril Cage,
A. 'The Rain in Spain Falls Mainly on the Plain'
[Ky stands in front of the Ancient Languages class, his desk is cleared with an open book]
You've done well in the literacy portion of the class, but as these are not dead languages in the outlands, and Latin is still the language of choice for spells in the Western World - you will need to keep up on your pronunciation guides.
One of the biggest traps is Homonyms - words that are similar but are pronounced differently, and homophone - different words that are pronounced the same. For example, Un Conte and Un Comte in French, and Allusion and Illusion in English are examples of words that can be easily mistaken for the other if one does not speak clearly.
Today, I have brought a spellbook, it's... well, a magic joke book for the lack of a better term, and we'll be practicing our enunciation by reading from it. Do not worry, effects are minor and harmless - and as an artifact, the spells are simply catalysts to activate it so it does not require magical talent to have an effect.
[With that, he takes the book, holding it in hand, reciting it - soon a breeze comes through the room, rustling papers and blowing his hair around]
Now, everyone will take turns and recite a line from this.
((OOC: So the spells if pronounced correctly will show off some special effects, but if said incorrectly will cause some amusing but harmless effects centered on the speaker that will wear off in a half-hour. Handwaving the actual Latin))
B. Catastrophic Failure?
[Like many magically inclined members, and especially as he's the instructor, he can be found at the Mythril Cage around sunset, going through a routine. This time, he's practicing in full plate mail, moving faster than someone would think is possible if their only exposure to armor is hackneyed fantasy movies.
Everything seems to be moving at a decent clip, well-honed and practiced, until suddenly as he swung the blade down - and it snaps at the contact point, a full 14 centimeters of the recently electrified and now broken sword goes flying]
Zut!
C. Feeling Thunderstruck?
[After an eventful week, Ky is trying to relax in his office, the door open so any students or other faculty members can drop in. Music can be heard from inside...
well, it's certainly not Gregorian chant. He does turn it down when someone comes in.]
D. Wildcard

...He blinked twice when he realized... where it was actually coming from. So he made his way over to Ky's door, and gave a knock as he peered in. ...And it looked like he was relaxing to it?]
...Professor? You're... actually enjoying that?
C
Yes...? It's got an energy that I can't quite describe but enjoy... how are you holding up?

[After all, what does a knight displaced by like, a thousand years end up liking in the future? With how much different modern music must be. ...Then again, it might be so different that... you know what? Maybe he was thinking about this too hard.
And it sort of stopped in its tracks when Ky asked the next question. ...He shut the door behind him as he stepped inside, preferring not to have someone else come in while he spoke of this. Ky was one of the only adults he truly trusted right now... and while his distrust might fade with time, he was very reticent to make the same mistake he did before.]
I'm... managing. It's still rough. Moniqa and Zeno are still trying to get QUILL sorted out, and it's still really... uncomfortable. Even though the evidence is there... it's still a lot for them to swallow. Don't know when, or if, I'll ever be welcome back there. ...And if I even want that.
[Some of that might be Gunvolt's own insecurities, and the bad taste that everything left in his mouth. There's a lot left to work through, and to accept. Not to mention confronting a very old fear of his...]

I suppose it's an odd choice? You're not the first to comment on it - now...
[With that, he goes over to his china cabinet, taking out a pair of teacups and pouring them both a white tea with lemon, listening quietly as the young man speaks, the uncertainty in GV's voice spoke volumes, and was painfully familiar]
Not knowing where you belong now... it's not something that can be solved overnight. It's not easy, taking in everything that happened, I'm sorry that this is something you ended up having to face.
[No one should experienced this kind of thing]
no subject
Yeah... it's not easy. But I've been lucky enough not to have to be alone again while dealing with this. I'd be in much worse shape if it was just me and Monarch dealing with the aftermath. Everyone's done a lot to keep me going.
[And he's more grateful than he can ever really express for that. Though he's able to carry on day-to-day like he used to, and still work, train, and study, there's still times it all catches, hitches, in his mind. Visions of it all, and... wondering what he's even going to do after Nightfall.]
...I keep telling myself I did what I had to do. And I know I'm right, that I did the right thing. But I still killed the closest thing to a father or older brother I had. The first person who really believed in me, even if it was in a completely twisted way.
[He leaned an elbow onto Ky's desk, briefly burrowing his face into that same hand. Eventually it came to rest on his forehead, as he leaned there. Most of the time, he was able to keep the facade up. Sometimes though, it'd slip. And right now, he didn't much care that it did. He just... felt like he had to be honest, not just with Ky, but with himself.]
...I got my revenge. But it hasn't helped. Not really. It's just been... empty. He's gone, but I still have to pick up the pieces.

Rather than just immediately write the session off as a missed one, though, she adjusts her routine for the day and makes her trip to the Cage closer to the evening, hoping that it isn't too busy. Since she isn't normally here at this time, she doesn't really know who or what she can expect to find.
She also doesn't expect part of a sword to be flying at her when she comes in.]
Ah—! [Fortunately, she reacts in time to shield herself, hastily erecting a wall using some nearby shadows. When she hears the impact and then the steel clattering on the floor, she releases her hold on those shadows, the barrier melting back down.
She looks at it for a moment, then over toward Ky.]
I suppose this is what I get for sleeping in today.

[The warning was not fast enough, but thankfully Desidera manages to shield herself in time, as he visibly sags and then sighs with relief]
Oh thank the Lord you aren't hurt.... Damnation, that could have ended a lot worse.
no subject
A bit shaken, but, yes, I'm otherwise fine, Professor Kiske. [Beat.] ...I probably should have paid a bit more attention before coming in.
no subject
[He sheathes the broken half of the sword he was still holding somewhat sheepishly]
Are you feeling any better - aside from that scare?
no subject
I've been doing better, yes. [The worst part of December had been the wait after Gunvolt's injury, but after his recovery and the mission that followed, Desi has been doing noticeably better than before. It might be at least partially out of necessity, though, as GV is still working his way through everything that had happened, and she needs to keep herself together so she can help keep him together.]
I have had some difficulty sleeping again, but that's honestly pretty normal for me, so I'm not terribly worried about it.
B + C-ish
Are you planning to fix it, or will you forge a new one?
Re: B + C-ish
A break like that - it's not going to be safe even if it's welded together, thankfully I already was talking with Jailbreak about forging a new one... so I shouldn't be without one for too long.
...tea?
no subject
I admit, I'm not very experienced with swords. [ Daggers are more his specialty. ] What do you intend to make your new one out of?
no subject
[He pours a cup for Ekkehardt in what became 'his' cup, a black piece with faint white almost lace-like details]
It should help channel my magic much more efficiently.

Which might be exactly why his expression is falling when he hears what the source material for this mess is. Normally he can take this sort of thing in stride, but joke books? Really?]
If I may? How does learning Latin if you are not magically inclined actually help? As far as I was aware Latin was only used in a magical sense by mages and not really anyone else. Even then a lot of catalysts can depend on other languages at this point if they're close enough to the source material... [Says the kid who knows three languages fluently.]
no subject
A good question - technically, Latin is not a language spoken commonly on Earth. However, in the Outlands, there are many groups whose primary, or primary trade and diplomatic communications are still made in Latin either due to the realm's flow of time not matching ours or from long periods of isolation.
no subject
You say many groups, but not all of them, there are still some that use another tongue or their own native one? [That's a stupid question, but now he's getting off-topic and might need to be reined back in if he's not careful.] Is it even possible to learn Latin in a conversational form like that anymore?
no subject
As for your second question... you're speaking to a man who had to learn Latin as a diplomat's language.
no subject
Though he's jolting out of his thoughts on the last part.]
You did what? [Was he even listening to before now?]
no subject
no subject
Congrats, Ky, he has no idea what to make of any of this and he's trying so hard to process just what the hell all of it means.]
Vul... gate? [And that's what he focuses on instead, it's fine.]
no subject
no subject
They considered an entire language to be vulgar? That sounds absolutely ridiculous even more than things tend to be now. [From what little he knows about these sorts of things, but he's heard his fair share of mage family drama and outcast drama to go with it.]

I wasn't there, but I'm pretty sure that's not how it worked.
