TOUR AND A MOVIE

Filming is ramping up.

Just as before, Higher Daybreak faculty are encouraging participants to see this as a way of learning to use their magical skills in a way that is discrete and ensures the protection of the Veil. It's spoken of as a chance for students to better learn how to hide their abilities while still putting them to use, disguising them as various other talents. In turn, they'll be credited in the film's production once it's complete, as well as receive extra credits in related courses. And of course, besides the great publicity, what better way to make a hit movie than adding a magical touch to it?

While work around the set continues to be welcomed and encouraged, this month filmmakers are particularly keen on finding those who can fill a newly opened role for an extra! Daybreak students are being to the very rare and special opportunity to audition in, without even going through the gruelling ordeal of terse agents, discouraging phone calls, and dull waiting areas! Just line right up and give it your best!

The following roles are open:

-Kindly and Adoring Town's Person Number Five

-Irritable Officer Number Two

-Overdramatic Restaurant Employee (or Customer, adjusted to match ages)

On top of this extraordinary opportunity, the winning student will be treated to a day on the town with De La Cruz himself.

On top of all this, with the improving weather, more scenes are being shot outside and in the heart of Soliel. It's quite possible to wander on set entirely by accident! Just remember that maintaining the laws of the Veil during this important project is still of utmost importance.

HONEST EFFORTS

Nothing happened. He took precautions, he followed the spell, he did everything right. He double-checked the runes and then triple checked the cage he'd set himself up in. There was light, there was energy, a whole burst of it shooting up around him and then darting out past the walls (and over the campus). And then nothing. He was still just as dead as before. He wasn't even a different kind of dead like his usual screw-ups led to. He made a flashy light show and nothing more. In a fit of frustration, he scraped the whole circle, packed up, and settled in to go back to work the next night.

But, with that morning, students and faculty alike around Daybreak may find themselves afflicted with a sudden need to be a little more candid than usual. Maybe a lot more candid.

The urge for honesty may manifest in being suddenly unable to lie-- either directly or at all. It might mean talking way too much. Maybe it means confessing things you've been bottling up, or simply showing who you are inside when you'd normally be inclined to hide it. It might just be something small and simple going throughout the day. Or, it could build into something so overwhelming it becomes impossible to bear until the truth is out. It varies from person to person and does, eventually, go away.

But it also may be intensified in those who might be just a bit too close to a certain someone...

...I'm not helping, am I? Like I said, I'm used to it by now, but that probably means I'm also a bit numb to it. It probably doesn't help that the memory sharing involved a big step in my relationship with my girlfriend and can someone just kill me now?

What kind of big step? I don't mean to invade your privacy but I don't seem to be able to stop asking and I'm curious about steps with my girlfriend and I agree about killing me now.

She ended up seeing some pretty major memories of mine. Two precisely, one bad and one good. It went a long way in helping us understand each other, I think.

[The slightly desperate tone in Weiss' voice fades as she speaks, until she's left with a fond smile as she remembers that moment.]

That said, I can't recommend it for other relationships unless you can find a more controlled method.

Oh, not the kind of step I was-

[she just. Sort of. Stops dead, turning very, very red.]

Um! Never mind! So! Club rooms!

[Huh? What did she mean by-]

[Weiss outright slaps her hand over her mouth to shut herself up.]

[Now she's even redder.]

I was trying very hard not to ask it's very hard right now and Ria please shut up you're not helping and this is not at all how I thought today was going to go.

It's not how I thought it was going to go either. I promised myself I would cut back on it, but I'm definitely having some blood pudding today after all this.

.... I'm sorry if this is rude but it's been a very weird day and I need to be very sure. Do you mean blood putting as in black pudding or as in some kind of weird vampire thing?

I mean actual literal blood. Pig's blood only, I promise. I'm just a dhampir so I don't actually need it, but it's sort of a comfort food.

...

I see. Okay.

[She just. Finally hit her breaking point, apparently. Now she's just smiling like this is perfectly normal and everything is fine. Just repress everything she doesn't want to deal with, that's fine.

(Inside her head, Ria is screaming.)]

Ah, I don't think I've gotten your name yet, miss?

Ah, how rude of me. Weiss Schnee, heiress to the Schnee Mining Company, the biggest source of both propellant and metal ore in Germany.

[She does an actual curtsy with her skirt.]

I'm Ruadh Speir... It's nice to meet you, miss, um... Vice? Is that how you pronounce it? I'm sorry, I'm not very good with German...

[She responds in kind, though hers is much clumsier and unpracticed.]

It's pronounced Wuh-ice, actually.

[She stops and gestures to the clubroom doors.]

Well, we're here. I'll see you around campus, I suppose.

[Weiss starts to walk away, but pauses.]

One last thing: If you think a dhampir is strange, you clearly haven't looked into the student body or the staff.

I... see? Okay.

[She nods, a bit confused, but.]

... I don't think it's that a dhampir is strange. What surprised me was how open you were about it.

Oh, that. I pretty much just decided to not keep it a secret when i found out about it. It seemed like more trouble than it was worth, especially at a place like Daybreak.

When you found out about it?

I spent most of my life thinking I was fully human. It was only last summer that I learned what I am. The signs were obvious in retrospect, but my father kept us in conditions that made them harder to spot. I think he didn't want anyone to know he's a vampire, including his own children.

[There's a pause, and.]

Um, no, we shouldn't-

[Another pause.]

We shouldn't- Even asking would-

[And then her neck just sort of. Twists 90 degrees.]

[Weiss just sort of. Blinks. There wasn't any crack, and she's still standing, so that probably wasn't something psychically breaking her neck. Still, best to ask.]

Are you alright? Does this sort of thing happen often?

I'm-

[Her shoulder pops, and suddenly, that arm is long enough to touch the ground.]

Vampires? Should we kill it? Both of them? Why are you fighting back, that's what you do to vampires, you should know that.

[Well, that doesn't bode well. Weiss forms a glyph behind Ruadh, but doesn't actually activate it yet.]

First of all, I am, again, a dhampir. I'm only half vampire. Second, there are several full vampires on campus who don't cause anyone trouble. Third...

[Weiss looks Ruadh in the eyes, and her gaze seems like that of a predator.]

The third thing is, my father is mine to deal with.

[In the eyes? That's going to be hard, because, well. Which eyes?

For some reason, her normally gray eyes look, well. Different. It looks like a layered effect, almost- Like a dozen irises overlay her own, each a different color, a scintillating rainbow of colors.

Her mouth also splits wide, wide open. Much, much wider than a human should, and it's teeth all the way back.]

Who cares about trouble? Hey, if I deal with you first, Whitey, then I get him by default. That's how this works, shut up, Ruadh, you think she's annoying too, this whole school is annoying, why don't I just wipe it all out, I'm going to do it, I'm going to-

[Her elongated arm lifts itself, fingers stretching out, as if grasping for something that isn't there...]

[That would be when the glyph kicks in, pulling her (them?) to the wall with approximately the gravity of Jupiter. Another glyph forms and an armored arm with a large sword emerges from it and moves to take a defensive position between her and Weiss.]

I don't think you'll be doing much of anything right now. I don't mean to brag, but I'm one of the more powerful students in this school. Now then, are we going to continue this farce, or are you going to give control back to the fairly pleasant young woman I've been talking to?

[She... laughs? No, she's pinned to the wall, but she's laughing uproariously now.

She's sort of... smooshing against the glyph. Sort of... squishing and sliding along it. Gravity pinning her to the wall? Who cares? Gravity is for people who have skeletons to worry about. She just sort of... bloops her hand out. The bones seem to stay behind, and a vaguely hand-shaped blob of flesh reaching out for her.]

Oh, now that's interesting. What's this? Hey, what's this thing? I bet we can figure it out. Come on, Ruadh, figure it out! I wanna turn this back on this smug- Hey, stop fighting back, this is the first time I've gotten out in months- I haven't even killed anyone this time!

[Well. The handblob can't quite make it to Weiss, but she's trying hard.]

[Weiss takes a step back, sighing in relief.]

Good, I wasn't entirely sure that could hold you. ...I didn't mean to say that. Now, are you going to calm down, or do I need to get a professor?
