battlefield: the enraged ones [open]
Who: A. Anyone!; B. Mostly those who have shown interest in fighting the Dragon, but even if you haven't posted in the OOC interest check, feel free to jump right in anyway!
What: A. Let's talk about Heralds; B. It's time to fight a Dragon daemon!
When: Late June. A happens before B.
Where: A. The Iris Network; B. A small town found within the Mount Lebanon mountain range, Lebanon.
Warnings: There will be fighting, likely with blood and possible gore.
Note: Will match format!
A. UN: murakumo_emille | Subject: Heralds
A. Colleagues and Students,
I, Head of Research Emille, have been looking into the beings known as Heralds in order to prepare for our eventual showdown with Utultar. There are records of battles against a previous Herald, Xelvak, and we cannot forget that a baby Herald resides with us within the walls of the Academy.
Therefore, for anyone who has fought with Xelvak or Utultar, or have interacted with the baby Herald, I would like to hear your story. What was your experience like? What was the Herald like? How do you feel about the baby Herald that resides with us? Is it an abomination, or worth training to fight with us?
As for myself, I will admit that I am wary of the baby Herald. As long as it does not become a threat, it can remain with us, but the moment it becomes dangerous we will need to take action against it. Besides, I do not believe it likes me much. That is my opinion. What is yours?

B. Codename: Sleepy Hollow
[One June afternoon, Emille receives a dire phone call from Murakumo HQ in Tokyo. They've detected signs of a butterfly-like Dragon daemon in Lebanon, and they're asking if she can mobilize a squad from Daybreak to nullify the threat. By the next morning, she and a select group of students are on a Murakumo-funded helicopter flight to the Middle East.
Upon touching down at the foot of a mountain range, they are taken in rugged ATVs to a small town within these mountains. The surrounding area is densely wooded, and snow-capped peaks can be seen off in the not-too-far distance. As for the town, it is a mess. It is obvious that something strange is going on, that a battle has been taking place. Burn marks can be seen on some of the buildings. Chunks of earth have been gouged out and strewn around. Small medical tents have been erected near the entrance to the town, with Murakumo doctors aiding wounded humans. And, of course, swaths of orange flowers have sprung up in various places, from the ground to the rooftops.
Emille and the group are greeted by a member of Murakumo as soon as they step out of the ATV. The uniformed, ventilation-masked man gives a quick debriefing: the Dragon daemon, codename Sleepy Hollow, has used some sort of ability like the shedding of its wing scales to turn the people of the town against each other, verbally and physically. Murakumo is currently working on providing an antidote to this problem, both for the victims and for those gearing up to fight the Dragon. Sleepy Hollow itself has been chased off for now, but it will be back anytime.
He then points to three stations: A larger tent set up next to the smaller medical tents where the antidote is being created, a small table with a nurse outside of the medical tents, and the biggest tent of all in the center of the town where the anti-Dragon briefing is about to begin.
Which station will you join? See the toplevels below for details!]

B. Codename: Sleepy Hollow

B3. center of operations
[The screen wavers and the call is cut immediately before a siren blares from a computer in the room. The man at the computer turns around and excitedly shouts,]
Sleepy Hollow has been sighted on the radar! It will attack in less than five minutes! Take your positions! Hurry!
no subject
It's been a while since he's felt a real thrill. He was calm and collected as ever before but when the sirens sound, he smiles. ]
Five minutes...[ And like the world's most sinister magical girl, he grips his giant coat from the shoulder and somehow removes it in one sweeping motion, as black ribbons wind around his body to form the muscle like combat suit and thick smoke coalescing into skeletal looking metallic additions, adding claws to his fingers and toes. A stripped-down version of his usual heavy plate armour, which also makes room for plenty of pouches full of various tricks. But his main weapons, his gigantic sword, shield and rifle are stored in the floating black box beside him. Ready to be launched out at his command. ] Too long.
[ He may be on the verge of his dangerous battle mania, but he's still Rex. He spends a moment handing out a small, green detergent pod like things and explaining they're healing items. Pop them on a wound and they'll help. ]
no subject
She leans against the wall, giving her various bits and pieces of equipment a last check. Her needle gleams sullenly in the light, a product of her meticulous care. ]
Are you so eager for the call of battle? [ Despite the bluntness of her question, it's not an accusation or a judgement. She, too, harbors a warrior's instincts; in some ways, this is simply fighting for survival once again. Just for others, rather than only herself. ]
no subject
As the others are getting ready, Emille is speaking with a member of Murakumo about their current defenses against this Dragon daemon's brainwashing ability. She returns to the group in a calm hurry and tells them what she's learned.]
President Hikasa wished for us to see the scientists about an experimental vaccine that will protect us against the Dragon's powder. It is fortunate that we will be testing one potential vaccine today [-- that is, the anti-Bloom pollen vaccine that Rex whipped up for her some time ago --] but I am not sure we have the time to have the second one administered to us. We will have to grit our teeth and fight the effects as best we can until it retreats again, or is slain.
[As soon as she finishes that sentence, a piercing "skreeeee!" can be heard from a distance outside, and the Murakumo agents inside the tent begin to scramble to their positions. Emille dons a Murakumo-issued ventilation mask over her head and nods to the others.]
It is time to face this Dragon daemon. Are you ready, Unit Daybreak?
no subject
[ He doesn't feel the need to justify why exactly that is. He wants to fight a dragon. It's self-explanatory. In contrast to all logic and his usual tactical thinking, he's actually a bit annoyed there are other people involved now that he can feel his the excitement building. It'd probably be rude to ask them all to wait here, wouldn't it? Shame.
He nods towards Emille, his clawed toes (the combat suit has individual toes, not shoes, it's kinda offputting) clacking slightly as he walks by on his way out. ]
Prevention may prove more effective than cure. [ He says this as the collar of his suit opens and expands into a helmet. Before it was just vaguely similar to a dog's skull, the extended muzzle akin to a jet pilot's mask. The new helmet is obviously canine, complete with rows of teeth along the snout. A small spout of the black smoke from before wafting from between the fangs for a moment. There's some kind of purpose for all of it, even the Doberman like pointed ears. All of it except for the glowing red eyes, which are just cool. ] Thus I suggest an all-out assault from the very start. I shall begin.
[ He might not be able to tell everyone to sit on their thumbs while he fights, but he can eagerly dive in ahead and call it strategy. That's fair. And not at all a sign he's about to go joyfully berserk because battle is so fun. Rising into the air, lifting his arms to shoulder height, he levitates upwards until the dragon is in his sights and doesn't waste a moment. Thrusting both hands forward, together with palms out and wrists crossed, Rex opens the proceedings by creating several eight orbs of electricity which briefly orbit around him before streaking towards the dragon, all at once. ]
no subject
She's pursuing Rex as well as the dragon; while she prefers to fight alone, it would be foolish to give up the tactical advantage that having teammates represents. To get out of Rex's way, she takes a hard swerve to his left, leaping rather than running to minimize the amount of air she inhales. She hurls her needle mid-leap, aiming to dive for one of the dragon's wings; from the information they were given, stopping it from being able to unleash the full effect of its scales is paramount. Silk drifts behind her in a loose web, ready to snap closed at the slightest impact. ]
no subject
It did not expect to be assaulted immediately by a very heavily armored man surrounded by orbs of electricity and a small woman's needle and web. Hornet's idea to attack to the left of Rex allows both of their attacks to be concentrated on either wing, stopping its flight in mid-air and causing it to plummet towards the ground, its wings slowing it enough so that it's able to regain its footing before landing. When it does land, dust from the scorched earth mixed with some of the Dragon's grey sleep-inducing scales that had been stirred up when its wings were attacked is kicked up in a cloud around it that extends over the entire town.
Now there is a haze of sleep powder floating through the air, but Rex and Hornet's dual attack proved that Sleepy Hollow's wings are a definite weak point. And there's an angry Dragon daemon staring them down in the midst of all this. It rears itself backwards, raises its front claws and hisses at its enemies. It then begins to undulate its long, whip-like tail in anticipation.]
no subject
When it does, whether she's struck by it or not, she'll use her needle to attempt to pin that tail to the ground to limit its mobility. ]
no subject
Not the gun itself, he fires the meat hook attached underneath. A wicked looking bladed hook on the end of a sturdy, lightweight chain that gouges into one of the daemon's wings, then rapidly starts retracting. It pulls the Slayer physically off the ground and into the air as he rockets towards it like a cannonball while letting out a roar of fury. He doesn't fire the shotgun itself until he is within a dozen feet of the beast.
He had no defense against the rage effect. He needed none. Daemonic magic could not make him any more angry than he already was.]
no subject
Of course, this doesn't mean he's not part of the 'all-out attack' plan. It just means he's doing a charge move. Using both hands in quick, elaborate motions done in a flurry of movement, Rex starts layering numerous spells atop each other. The black speck that forms in front of him is literally microscopic and the energy it's aligning is invisible- after all, you don't actually see light if it's not hitting your eyes. But that doesn't mean it can't melt through steel when you focus it just right.
It's not ready yet. He'll just tell everyone to dodge when it is. ]

Shredding the wing has caused even more scales to fill the air, this time the ones that inflict confusion and madness, which begin to fall all over the town. Unfortunately, some of the Murakumo soldiers who had been standing at the entrance of the tent to watch the battle unfold failed to put their ventilation masks on before it was too late, and now three of them are beginning to draw their weapons or calling upon arcane energies to launch an attack on Unit Daybreak...
Sleepy Hollow, now wounded, flutters haphazardly towards the forest surrounding the town in an attempt to regrow its wing before returning to the battle. As it retreats, the three Murakumo soldiers begin to approach Hornet, Rex, and the Slayer from behind. One of the soldiers is a man wielding a katana, another is a woman readying two pistols, and the third is presumably a man -- his face is obscured by a hoodie and wild, unkempt hair spilling out around it -- waving his glowing hands about, preparing to cast a spell at his new enemies.
Emille hasn't even noticed the new opponents. She's had her eyes squarely on the Dragon daemon this entire time, and is now pursuing it relentlessly as it retreats. She isn't able to overcome it, but she remains close behind, rapier at the ready.]
no subject
She spins and darts towards the three soldiers, spinning silk from her wrists to create a net. She ties one end of her new creation to her needle and hurls it into the ground to create an anchor; she takes the other end and leaps forward, aiming to cast her net over all three and pin them down before they can get any further. The silk is tough enough to withstand even bullets, at least for a little while. ]

[ The ears of Rex's helmet rotate, detecting the new enemies. His solution is relatively simple- he just flies higher and pursues the dragon, his hands still held in the same position. The rational side of him concludes that firing this particular spell at unwilling combatants would be a bad idea and that it should be shot downwards towards the target anyway. The irrational part just thinks fighting a dragon is more fun than three scrubs. The imperceptible black spot between his hands is ready. By simply pointing his finger, he aims. ]
Stay back!
[ The warning is loudly amplified by his helmet and has a few seconds wait behind it, but Rex is impatient to try this spell. If this was an anime or something, time would freeze the words Atom: Real Laser would hit the screen one letter at a time. It is, however, remarkably unflashy. Invisible, an energy beam moving at the speed of light. One second nothing, the next a red spot where it lands. And then, because when you heat something to 20,000°c instantaneously it tends to be dangerous, an explosion.
The problem is, Rex hasn't done this before outside of the lab at lower power. It's entirely possible he just missed and made a 10-foot circle of molten lava out of the ground instead of actually doing anything useful. ]
no subject
On the other hand, the magic-user is able to unleash his magic spell, a rain of ice shards that spread out into the general area in front of him, before the net wraps him up. Almost immediately, however, his body visibly begins to glow red underneath the silk as he attempts to cast a fire spell to burn his way out.]
-------
[Emille continues chasing the dragging Dragon into the outskirts of the forest surrounding the town as Rex begins casting his spell. She doesn't hear his warning cry; she's too focused on the blood pounding in her ears and the wailing voices that have begun to echo about in her head.
What she does hear, and notice, is the line of trees snapping in half around her as the laser flies towards Sleepy Hollow. Emille is able to jump back out of the way of one of the falling cedars, and she scrambles under it for protection and watches the Dragon scream out in pain from the beam penetrating the tip of a wing, and then promptly catching aflame. The laser hits the ground a good distance further than Sleepy Hollow, but it still shakes the ground with an explosion that causes some trees to go flying and the rest of them in the area to begin smoldering. The smoke quickly becomes thick, and both Sleepy Hollow and Emille are stuck in it, unable to see much.
This doesn't stop Emille, however, from crawling out from under the cedar to find the Dragon and slay it. The ventilation mask she's wearing is preventing her from suffocating, so she just walks right into the smoke cloud that the monster has whipped up. She kind of ignores the extreme heat generated from the spell and the subsequent fire, but she'll probably feel that in the morning...]
no subject
She doesn't exactly specialise in switching people off with precision, but she knows how to knock people out. The silk glows as she sends the man flying backward into a wall, to break his concentration and hopefully to wind him. The silk should prevent him from anything more than that; it's strong, after all.
She cuts the bonds, leaving the three people bound there as she feels, rather than sees, the crashing vibration of something falling to the ground. She races towards the smoke, adjusting her mask as she runs, spinning another net of silk in an attempt to stop the dragon from taking off. While she's capable of aerial battle, letting it take to the air further will only heighten the range of its ability. ]

[ Rex says with a small giggle that would likely sound quite alien to those who know him. The childlike glee of battle and testing new spells is getting to the normally stoic young man and even as he blows up a forest he can't help but feel enjoyment.
Still, the flames and smoke aren't his allies here. The concern for the dust is fading as the immediate fun of combat is narrowing his focus, but he needs to be able to see his opponent (he's transitioned from 'their opponent' in his head) and begins an elaborate series of movements, creating a small windy vortex between his hands. It's not exactly putting out fires yet, but drawing most of the heat, ash and smoke up into a sphere stops the spread considerably, as well as improves visibility. It's all being drawn to him, like an upside-down flaming tornado and don't think he's not going to throw it at something in a minute. ]
no subject
The Psychic, however, is still awake enough after being thrown into a wall and tied up that his hands are still glowing red with magic as Hornet goes after the Dragon. It'll take a while, but the heat he is generating should start burning through the inner layers of the web he's in.]
--------------------
Neither Dragon nor human take much notice when the smoke and heat from the forest fire begins to thin as Rex uses his wind magic. Sleepy Hollow would try flying away, but all it can do is use its four smaller legs to try and get a jump-and-flutter boost for some aerial distance from Emille's rapier. This attempt is cut short by a sudden silken net dropping down onto it, causing the Dragon to screech in frustration and try clawing its way out.
Emille takes this opportunity to observe her foe, waiting for it to tire itself out so she can deliver a finishing blow. Once it exposes the part of its neck right behind its crest, she'll be going in for the kill.]
no subject
She feels the shock immediately as the dragon tangles itself in her net, and draws it in tighter as a near-automatic response. It's important to bind the prey, to stop it from doing further damage. And there's no sense at all in rushing in to try and get the kill when another already has it, so she stays at a distance, holding the net tight, reinforcing it. ]
no subject
Except he's still a bit excited. So he's going to hit the thing with his Sunday best. The wind kicks up even harder for a moment as all that flame and air is sucked up, compressed and undergoes a rapid transformation. He's long since mastered creating rocket fuel out of air and interestingly, all that carbon from the ash has its uses in other formulae. So instead of throwing the ball of concentrated fuel, he uses it to propel himself down.
On the way, the black box that faithfully follows him launches his sword at his hands. Catching something of Eternal Sunlight's incredible weight makes him start to spin as he descends, flames ejecting from the sphere now held in his feet (the toes are not just for show) but that's also part of the plan. Just adds momentum. His shape is distorted to the eye, like a spinning top with the broadest section the gold of his six foot sword.
He didn't know Eternal Sunlight could also turn into a rocket, but she has decided this incredibly stupid plan is worthy of rewarding by revealing one of her abilities. Vents open on his sword, further flames blasting out to increase the torque of his spin. It's dreadfully difficult to aim, so his meteor strike of a sword swing is aiming form Sleepy Hollow's centre mass.
...If he hits or not, he's still flying off into the distance and crashing into a rock headfirst. It's his first time, leave him alone. ]
no subject
It's at about this same moment that Rex and Eternal Sunlight are hurtling through the air up above the battleground. Emille is able to slice into the flailing creature's neck moments before Rex plows into the Dragon's midsection, effectively cutting its snake-like torso in half. As he continues to fly off into a rock (owch), Emille also finds herself being catapulted into the air from the impact and unable to do anything about it.
Sleepy Hollow's bodily halves twitch about on the ground, with its head also halfway detached from its neck. Though it seems to be in its death throes, its body begins to glow, and the ground becomes carpeted in deadly orange Bloom flowers.
In the midst of all this, a wave of searing fire comes barreling towards Unit Daybreak from behind -- the Psychic mage from before has managed to burn his way through the silk, and he has also freed the sword-wielding Samurai and gun-toting Agent, who are standing at the Psychic's side.]
no subject
Rather than rely on silk, she leaps on the mage, driving her knee into his stomach in a calculated move to try and knock the wind out of him. She might be smaller than some adult humans, but she's learned from her travels that anything that wears its flesh on the outside tends to be remarkably sensitive to high impacts.
She spins the kick into lashes of silk, aiming to knock the other two off their feet. She backs away somewhat, just to put space between them all, watching intently. ]
no subject
Well, that was fun. I would have appreciated a warning, though.
[ He says that last bit to his sword, because she keeps doing things he has no idea she can do. He only has a general idea of where Emille flew off to and decides to focus on stopping the flames reaching her, or starting a second forest fire. He lets Hornet deal with the rough stuff. Now it's Blue Moon's turn. Holding his hand out, his gauntlet flies from the black box to fit over his arm, the beautiful blue crystal expanding a silver disc of a shield. Getting between the flames at the... general direction Emille went, he's also scanning for her. In case, you know, he accidentally knocked her out or some embarassing shit. ]
(no subject)
just to wrap this up -- Dragon defeated!
no subject
He didn't say anything, though. Rex probably could barely even tell he was being looked at, behind all that armor. The Slayer had heard of "wearing light armor to improve mobility" and wanted no part of it.
no subject
But his role in things was simple. There was a daemon, and he had a shotgun. That was...about it.
The Slayer calmly walked out to the front of their position, fully decked out in his armor, with his shotgun in one hand. He climbed up on top of a medium sized rock to get a better view, and waited. The rage was still there, of course. It never really left. But for the moment, it was under a lid of almost serene calm. The Slayer just...waited. When the daemon appeared, he would act.
no subject
Now that the daemon is within his grasp, what will the Slayer do?
