Set-Up and Info
Maya hadn't told anyone about her birthday. The reason being she just- didn't feel like celebrating another year on this Earth. Messed up, right? It was just a reminder, to her, of the years some people didn't get. And she didn't feel she deserved to get free stuff.Lumiere Floor 1 Common - Morning (Open)
Not that she didn't like free stuff, it just itched at the back of her mind when it happened now. Family it was different. Friends- well, she couldn't refuse stuff once it was sent. Especially now. So her presents from home were opened as they arrived, Katie's and Mom's gifts arrived on the first. Grace, Miles, and Zoe's gifts arrived a few days ago. Zig and Tiny swear theirs is in the mail, they forgot about customs.
But Maya hadn't really been making a big deal about them, and dismissing the things as just 'some stuff from home' and hiding the cards as best she could. Her school account does list her age, and it did tick up to eighteen that morning. If one pays attention to that sort of thing.
One of the school golems arrived at Maya's door early in the morning. It had a cake. The container had the markings of being from Honey and Sugar in town. And a note.Theater Lenormand (Open)
Maya, sorry we can't be there today, but we felt cake for breakfast might make it easier for you. - Love Mom & Katie
Maya stuffs the note in her pocket and sets the cake up in the common room. She's indifferent to the lack of text on it, but it's a simple red velvet cake and she has no problem at all cutting herself a slice and serving it to herself in her pajamas, in the common room. Sitting there to eat. Eventually she should make a note about anyone can have cake. But for now she'll just tell people.
...or she'll eat the whole thing. She's fine with either option.
Maya ditches all her study sessions for the day and spends a great deal of time in one of the practice rooms, with her cello, playing all manner of song to herself. Hours of just letting her cello sing. Most of the songs are melancholy in nature. Although once to amuse herself she does play happy birthday. Just- to say it happened, she supposes.Cafe de la Lune (Open)
The door is open, letting the music spread out into the hall for anyone nearby.
Maya's writing in her notebook, with a latte next to her that she works on slowly.. This isn't her usual notebook, this isn't for songs and music. She's trying to work out what she wants to learn here. She hadn't really- thought it through past helping people.Hog's Swill - Night (Open)
So she's working out what sort of tools and magic would improve her power. Make her more useful, less of a burden. Occasionally she just leaves her book open and watches the people. Just- listening to normal people going through their day. Most of them sound so happy and okay with the world.
Please sneak up on this grump while she is distracted.
Listen, it is her birthday she is going to drink a little. Not get drunk. She just wants to drink a little and hustle some pool. Act a little less coordinated than she is, call it a stick thingie, lose a little. Ask them to go easy, it's her birthday.
Then take them for everything they have when they actually bet money. Maya has very simple demands on this day. And this is about the only time during the day she'll fess up to her birthday. So maybe you overhear that.
Theater
The young man decided not to bother her, and goes to leave when his earphone's cords catches on the door handle.
"Auugh?!" He jerks back as the remaining bud rips out of his ear, catching himself before he falls off balance.
no subject
She'll refrain from commentary on how clumsy and inelegant that was because he's a dancer and that'd be mean. "You okay?"
no subject
"Sorry about disturbing you."
no subject
That's a lie, Maya knows she's distracting, she just doesn't want to admit to that right now. "Heading anywhere specific?"
no subject
"I was heading to practice, actually."

hog's swill
He becomes increasingly dissatisfied with this plan the more steps he takes into the establishment. And there's...that one chick. Playing pool -- he was garbage at pool even though Ramona could play it well enough, because he couldn't always see the numbers and he had too hard of a time telling certain ones apart, and because he didn't have a good eye for those things. He does have a fond memory of whacking someone in the back of the neck with the stick, though. That was a good pool memory.
...Her birthday, huh. He isn't sure he quite believes that, but he owes her, anyway. During one of the lulls in her hustling, Maverick goes over and hops up to sit on the edge of the table.]
Hey, porcelain -- you're starting to look too sharp, we gotta top you off. What d'you drink?
no subject
Here, German beer. They don't have a good Bourbon in stock.
no subject
And that is...not making him confident in this place's ability to make a mean cocktail. Dammit. He wanted something with actual taste today.]
Two beers it is... [The one bonus to being a ginger is that it's easy to stand out when you need to, even if you're a shrimp. Mav flags the bartender down with relative ease, and soon enough...! Ta-dah! Some kind of German beer for each of them.] You know, I wouldn't have fucking taken you for the conman type, but I guess that's just another point in your favor.
no subject
How is it my fault they can't tell I know how to play pool?
*Most would assume someone that looks like Maya can't drink them under the table, or keep her coordination while drunk. Being drunk just makes her a bit mean, and right now she's just tipsy.*
So... other than being concerned about other patrons and their pool bets, what's with the drink offer?

And every now and again she would turn the page.
It was only when Maya set the cake down that she took out her earbuds.]
I accept your offering.

*Maya takes a steadying breath, which doesn't make a noise. Oh yeah, fun fact: Maya is invisible to supernatural senses, that's gotta be weird for anyone with anything adjacent to or similar to Peter's Spider-Sense, right?*
Have some if you want, I'm not going to eat a whole cake.
*Be cool, cut a slice of cake and sit down.*
no subject
[She leans forward and sets her book aside, which wasn't getting all the use to begin with. Gwen remains none the wiser as she takes her slice.
It's a well-known fact that she enjoys food.
Free food specifically.
And even more when it's cake.]
What's the occasion?
no subject
I don't question cake. Especially when I can't hear any magic to it.
And there don't seem to be any crickets in it.
*The concerns you gain when you live here.*

Common Room
"Gongenzaka, are you--? Oh." He pauses when he sees Maya, looking between her and the cake. Since her admission she was avoiding him on the field trip, Yuya's been mindful about keeping space between the two of them. But she's Gongenzaka's roommate, so it's impossible for him to never see it.
He looks at the cake again, a little curious.
"... Hi. Did Gongenzaka already leave the dorm?"
no subject
Maya's good at power flexing, she wasn't really paying attention when she got up, just going about her morning after having to deal with a cake that's arrived. Which kinda distracted her, because it's a gesture from her sister and cake is delicious.
"You can leave a message, no idea when he'll be back."
no subject
"No, it's okay!" Yuya waves his hand hurriedly with a small smile. "It isn't an emergency, I just though I'd catch him before be left, since I threw off his schedule yesterday..."
Yuya thought maybe he'd sleep in but, true to Gongenzaka, he didn't.

Cafe de la Lune
"Maya~! Hello~! How are you~!?"
no subject
"Oh. Fine, I guess." As much as ever. "What's up?"
no subject
"Not much!"
He has no plans for the day, as usual.
"What are you writing!?"

And the next time monsters attack the school, like the Hollows. Or if she's in the Outlands on a field trip. She knew her value, but she knew her limits. Much like trying to put together a band, putting together a skillset was covering weaknesses. Picking up obvious slack. Right?
"So I don't spend demon attacked dances being protected."

[Closed] [Not on March 2nd, later than that] - Imelda
She got it most of the time, but it wasn't all of the time. Which is really where she needed to be if she was going to do anything to really help, right?
Maya was, however, in better spirits. Some things had just been working out well, she had a plan (half of a plan), she's started opening up a bit more (sometimes), some good things were happening around her. One being a change she noticed in Ms. Rivera's sound, which made Maya smile just a bit every time she saw her.
But that wasn't the topic right now, right now she had a baton to extend and collapse over and over. In the common room. Where anyone could just walk in.
no subject
What she finds is... not who she expected to find. And not what she expected this person to be doing, either. She wonders if she should keep moving on... but she's already stopped to come into this room. It would be awkward to leave it without saying anything... Maybe just a mild comment. Something non-confrontational.
"There's training rooms for this sort of thing."
Nailed it.
no subject
Maya didn't make noise, but the extent of her silence wasn't unlimited. Stairs wouldn't creak under her, but a floorboard would. And in this case she wasn't stretching her silence over her baton as she practiced with it. So it made noise extending and when she forced it to collapse.
She'd need to work on that in the field, to not alert anyone to her presence.
There's Maya smiling again, she's been doing that a lot, "Plus I have a lot of work to really be ready for this to be any good. And I can't just run off to the Quarters all the time."
i always forget the silence thing... whoops
"Well, so long as your nervous energy stays clear of the other students and the furniture." It's not her floor to decide what she can and can't swing around, so long as no one and nothing is getting stuck.
And that might have been where she left it, but that smiling is still a thing...
"Did something good happen lately?"
