Sometimes, after tests are done and mysteries uncovered, the teachers need to relax.

Which is why there is karaoke! The faculty of Daybreak Academy have converged, through random inspiration and not a terrible lot of planning, on one unsuspecting bar in Soleil on a Friday evening. A few drinks (or more!) are to be had; however, there is also a stage, with a microphone and a big screen -- which shows a music video for whatever song is on -- and the lyrics. A friendly little green ball bounces over them.

It is time to sing your heart out.

It is time... for karaoke.

[To begin with, Hieke is only vaguely aware of what karaoke is. He's lived a long life, sure, but most of his life was. You know. Spent doing daemon-y things. Wheeling and dealing, murdering without remorse, learning how to reverse death and recreate bodies. Standard stuff.

Standard daemon stuff didn't really involve going out drinking or singing songs or anything like this. He's obviously overwhelmed - he grips his glass of "uh, whatever you'd recommend?" tightly and looks like he desperately wants to disappear.

[Eventually, Hieke loosens up - largely thanks to more and more drinks. Apparently, daemons can get drunk off human alcohol. Who would have known! Hieke didn't know.

Hieke knows now, though really all that matters is that he feels great. Everything is just so great right now? At least that's what you'd think, given he keeps giggling.

And then, abruptly, he leans over.]

Yooouuuuuu should go up there! [Ehehehe.] I'd bet you'd do great!

[Ky was drinking a mead-based cocktail and quite a bit more without only seeming to be lightly buzzed, surprised as Heike leans in]

Hah! I wouldn't even know anything they have!

[Come on, it's a genius plan.]

[He shakes his head, chuckling as someone came by, and suggested he tries a whiskey, an offer Ky takes up]

I wonder if that's true... though it seems some people have wasted no time in getting drunk.

[Hieke looks at the glasses he's managed to accumulate. He still has no idea what most of them are, but...]

Isn't that the whole point? To drink all you can and then belt out your feelings?

[He leans back, idly stacking the glasses before a server quickly goes to scoop it to keep them from breaking]

I mean, that is why drinking songs exists...

[Hmmm. Hieke squints at Ky, considering.]

How many drinking songs do you know? Because I don't know any.

A couple, latin and old french mostly.

[He taps his chin, trying to rouse his brain up to translate them]

You could just sing the originals! It'll be great, we could all learn something!

[Like how strange people were back in the day.]

Is there anything you'd like to ask, Hieke? [ While he's no mind-reader or seer, discomfort seems to be where you'd find Hieke's current picture in the dictionary.

His tone is non-judgemental. ]

[Right now the biggest question is "why am I here?" but there's no good answer to that.]

Uh. What's the point of all this?

It's a friendly bonding activity, more or less. You get drunk together, and you sing songs. Sometimes in that order, sometimes not. It varies from individual to individual.

It's not terribly complex.

Most bonding activities I've seen are, you know.

[He makes a chopping motion with his free hand.]

Like that.

Well, you'll be happy - or unhappy, maybe - to know that this isn't nearly so deadly. [ Sips his drink. ]

Except when people get drunk and do things that make them want to die of embarrassment the next day, perhaps, but no actual blood is spilled. The worst I imagine it'll get is that we might have a few people asking for hangover cures tomorrow.

No, that's a relief. [It really is! He's trying at this whole non-violence thing!]

So all I have to worry about is who's going to whine at us, got it. [He finally takes a sip of his own drink.] Have you done this a lot?

[spelleton]

You have the essentials down, yes. [ Another sip. ]

Getting people drunk? Quite a bit. [ The phrasing there is deliberately excluding him, because he doesn't get drunk. ] Karaoke, no. But I'm looking forward to the clearly stellar performances our coworkers will come up with.

[inflictwounds]

Good to know. [He wonders how many are going to end the night sober. At this point, he doesn't even know if this is going to get him drunk.]

Are you going to perform?

[spelleton]

[ He laughs and waves a hand. ] I'm not the performing type. I'll stay out of it. [ Until he's bullied or coaxed or convinced into it later, naturally. ]

What about you? Any songs that strike your fancy?

[inflictwounds]

[Snort.] Oh, really? You seem like the performing type to me.

And I don't know. I don't really...know. Song.

[spelleton]

My oh my, what gave you that idea? [ He's amused and slightly intrigued, he has to admit. He's never projected himself much. ]

Well, look through the catalogue. Maybe something will catch your eye.

You just seem like the kind of person who appreciates a bit of flair. [You wear a veil. You're extra as fuck, Ekkehardt.]

I'm pretty sure I won't recognize much of the music, but I guess it's worth a shot...
