Who: Adelaide Cooke & James Griffin
What: Two American kids are new to France and decide to go hiking to explore the new surroundings!
When: Backdated to like... Feb 30th, oops.
Where: Outside of town, outside of campus, somewhere in the forest finding local landmarks like Cool Meaningful Big Rocks and other smash hits.
Warnings: This should be warning-free.
[ James may appear.. a tad over-prepared. For all he tries to look cool and suave, deep down he just really likes playing it all by the book. That's why he appears to pick up Adelaide with a backpack of food and water, a compass, a map and... who knows what else is stowed away in there. A first aid kit, probably.
It's not that he's nervous so much as that he's excited and excitement leads him to prepare for all eventualities. France is new, the Alps are new and even friendship is all new here. James has spent his life as someone who was established. A family that lived in the same town for generations, an environment that knew and respected him. Now he's uprooted and he feels a little like a different person. This different person is very determined to establish a good relationship with his next door neighbor Adelaide.
They've made it to the edge of town by now, staring up at the beginning of a forest trail. He flashes her a grin. ]
Ready?

Ready?

And then, promptly, the nerves had set in. He seems, from their brief conversation, to be an alright sort! There's probably no reason for her to be nervous! The chances of anything bad happening are probably incredibly thin, but she can't shake the conversations she keeps having. Between Maverick, Kohaku, and Claire, she's nervous about getting to know anyone. She doesn't want to keep lying about who she is, but...
It might be necessary. Just to be safe. Still, that's no reason to not get out there.]
I think so!
[She's at least managed to put her worries aside and gotten ready for a proper excursion - she's got her own snacks and water, even if she hasn't gone as overboard as James has.]
Onward and upward!
no subject
Thus he walks onto the trail alongside his new friend with no concerns whatsoever. ]
I've got a map in case we get lost, but it's somewhere at the bottom of my stuff. Figured it might be more fun to see where this takes us first.
[ He's already verified that the forest this close to down isn't known for being the most dangerous and that other townpeople also frequent it for hikes. ]
no subject
So we're definitely going to need to mark a trail for ourselves, then?
[She laughs, softly. She's not worried about getting lost, not really, but she can't help but tease.]
no subject
Only if you want to turn this into live action roleplay or something. Doubt we'll actually get lost this close to town.
[ There's bound to be paths and waysigns every once in a while, even if they walked off-path and totally into the wilderness. Or so he figures. ]
no subject
I don't know if I'm really keen on the idea of LARPing. I'd probably be awful at staying in character.
[Also, she's not a neeeeerd.
Well. She's enough of one to know what LARPing is.]
And, well, probably not. Could you imagine if they had to send out a search party for us? That'd be mortifying.

Oh god, on the list of worst first impressions to make at a new school... that's number two, right below ripped pants. Maybe even above that, because the amount of agency involved is higher...
[ Either way, terrible. ]
There's out adventure stakes then.
no subject
I don't know, there's probably something worse that getting lost or ripping your pants - this is a magic school, after all. The worst thing we could probably do is, like, unleash some ancient curse.
[Which is probably incredibly probable, just not so much out in the woods.]
So we'll probably be fine!
no subject
That surpasses embarrassing and goes straight down to mortifying. The good news would be our low survival chances - might not even have to deal with the fallout.
[ If you unleash a curse, you're probably the first thing in its way. Oooorrr its new master, maybe? Hm. ]
no subject
It's not like there's a lot of competition. Everyone at this school is some sort of weirdo.]
Yeah, we'd probably go out first. Unless the curse was something terrible but not fatal, and then we'd have to live with it forever.
[Adelaide doesn't really know how curses work, but a curse could be just about anything.
They're probably doomed.]
no subject
Maybe it'd consume us and use us as host bodies for its deets. Might even survive that, it'd just be terrifying to wake up from.
[ He's pretty sure this one is decently possible, too. ]
Magic is pretty interesting.
no subject
What, so we'd just black out and then wake up and everything is in ruins?
[A pause, as she considers all of this.]
Magic is wild. It's basically just making the impossible possible.
no subject
[ Which makes a big difference when you've known all your life and others just... haven't. ]
There's set rules for every brand of magic, they're just hard to all learn. I'm not sure how well documented they are, too. We'll probably lean that in class at some point.
no subject
Yeah, I guess you're right. It all depends on how you look at it.
[And that brings her to an even more important question.]
But...there has to be stuff that even magic can't do, right?
no subject
There definitely is. I think that's part of why this school exist, why they need us for Nightfall. Because there is no magic that can just stop it.
no subject
It'd be nice if it was that easy. [She sighs, shoulders dropping.] But that wouldn't leave them with much to teach, huh?
no subject
[ And this isn't even really a college, is it... ]
I saw an elementary schooler try and practice with a mace here, it's a little depressing.
no subject
[...She hopes vampire hunters aren't a real thing. That would be bad.]
Yeah, I don't...really think we should be expecting kids to have to fight. They should have, y'know, childhoods...
no subject
They won't be able to even finish those childhoods if Nightfall comes to pass, is the thing. So as sad as it is, I see why they're gathering all talent they can get.
[ Though James has grown up away from Daybreak, it'd always been with the expectation of Nightfall at the back of his mind. His training had been more limited but certainly not nonexistent. ]
no subject
I don't think they'll be able to have one even if Nightfall gets resolved. [She waves a hand, as if that's going to help explain her point.] At this point none of us have any chance for a normal life, if we manage to succeed.
[Especially the kids who have been training for this their whole lives. If Nightfall comes to pass and they make it through the other side, what are they going to do when all that's left is to go back to "normal"?]
no subject
[ His plans for life had never involved being 'normal' so much as being 'outstanding' and everything about Secret Societies had only played into these expectations. Expectations by his father, expectations for himself... ]
But they'll be alive and that's what counts. Forging a life as unsung heroes is still better than dying as kids, in the end. I guess that means there's no point being sad about it either, just... still a hard sight.
no subject
Though, Adelaide suppose, they're at least not dealing with this alone.]
It's going to be a lot to take in. But...hopefully we'll all pull through this, and it'll be worth it in the end!
[There has to be some silver lining.]
no subject
Definitely. I've certainly not given up on my own future. Which is why I'll be giving m all in the classes unrelated to battle. That college certificate can't be totally worthless in the end, right?
no subject
It better. I don't want all of my studying to just mean nothing! We've got too much on our plates for it to all be pointless when the dust settles.
no subject
Though I'm going to join the Garrison, of course. Do you have ideas?
[ To avert the fatalistic mood a little... ]
no subject
[And isn't that a question. Adelaide scratches at her cheek, before shaking her head.]
I have no idea. I didn't really have an idea before I came here, and now it's just...even more overwhelming. I'm sure I'll think of something, though.
no subject
[ There's another short encouraging smile flashed in Adelaide's direction, because James is aiming to be a Supportive Classmate (tm) always.
The job-searching conversation is cut short though by their path forking ahead. There's signs pointing out the destination at each direction. Roche du diable on the left and tour de guet on the right. ]
Alright, where to?
no subject
[She appreciates the Supportive Classmate (tm) move, and smiles back at him.
Also, hm. She doesn't know much French, but she knows enough to get the feeling that diable means they'd be in for a bad time.]
Maybe we should go to the right.
[Hopefully her gut instinct is actually right.]
no subject
[ He was personally counting on 'diable' being over-dramatic naming sense, but Adelaide is probably right to not take chances in Magic Academy Town. It isn't exactly the same as being in a tourist trap area. ]
France is so... green. [ Not the most witty of statements. ] I'm used to seeing desert stretching into infinity and here you really can't see further than a few steps before the flora cuts you off. Photobooks don't do it justice.
no subject
Yeah, I guess anywhere would be more green than the desert. [She can't fathom what it's like in the desert. She didn't live nearly that far west.] This place is way more green than home for me, too. It's like...shockingly picturesque.
[Again, like a fairy tale.]
