On Sunday, several helicopters arrive on campus, bearing camera crews and reporters. The two reporters assigned to this task, Miriam Roberts and Eugene Lewis, are older, kindly reporters who specialize in soft features for morning talk show affairs. The Academy is keeping the crews in a tightly controlled space, setting them up in an older, low-usage building just off main campus and restricting their movements “out of respect for the privacy of our students”.

All students being interviewed will have a faculty member present at all times to ensure they’re properly protected and that the journalists don’t ask unapproved questions. In general, the Academy has stipulated that asking students about their personal affairs, monetary situation, and family situation are absolutely off limits, and the job of the faculty is to ensure interviews stay on topic - that of the school and the school experience, with an emphasis on the opportunities the wealth and resources of the school offer to the students who attend.

While the BBC is out, there are a number of things going on for students and faculty to engage in. The BBC crews themselves are expected to be polite, if a bit entitled and dismissive in a way that the British have mastered, and nosy, always trying to get more of a scoop than they were permitted. All players may run BBC crews as NPCs in their threads when applicable.

A. VOLUNTEERISM

Students will have the opportunity to escort BBC crew around campus and answer facilities-related questions. As this is expected to be reported on by the crew even if they don’t use much footage, students selected for this duty will be students who are more polite and don’t have too many overt anti-authority tendencies. These students will be additinally tasked with ensuring the camera crews don’t stray off target during the day.

B. NIGHT GUARDIANS

Nobody really expects the journalists to stay in their prescribed lanes, and during the night is the most likely time that they will attempt to get some candid footage and interviews. As such, faculty will be tasked with patrolling the area around the BBC quarters, with the intent of keeping students out and reporters in. This is equal parts protective for the BBC - it really wouldn’t do for a student to use their flame to prank a reporter - and protective for the students, who the Academy does not want fully exposed to the world just yet. Faculty assigned to night duty will be instructed to be openly walking the grounds and to reveal themselves to any crew who stray and redirect them to their proper place. Faculty are to be polite, of course, but firm.

C. INTERVIEWS

The BBC have arranged a number of interviews with students over the course of the week. The Academy has vetted the students and coached them beforehand on what can be talked about and what cannot be talked about, and there will always be a Faculty member on hand whenever a student is interviewed. The generally approved topics are the school and the more conventional classes, the accommodations, the facilities barring the Mythril Cage and related supernatural combat facilities, and the lavish vacation trips the school sponsors. Faculty are mostly there to make sure nobody says something they shouldn’t and redirect or cover conversation that goes places it shouldn’t.

D. CANDID FOOTAGE

All throughout the week, BBC reporters will be taking candid footage of the main campus in areas they’ve been authorized to record in. As such, all major supernatural classes have been moved to the Citadel, but all Citadel entrances outside of the ones near the dormitories have been temporarily closed. The entirety of main campus will be used for more mundane classes, and professors who normally teach supernatural classes will be diverted to mundane classes for the week. During this time you can expect BBC cameras constantly rolling to capture footage of students coming and going, and a number of faculty members trying to figure out how to wing math or history classes when their actual specialty is daemon slaying.

E. OXFORD UNIVERSITY

Students who don't feel comfortable with the impending BBC visit and feigned normalcy are, of course, able to volunteer to take a trip out to Oxford University and study under their mage academy. One of the oldest and most prestigious western mage academies in the world, Oxford has been a beacon of magical learning for centuries. As such, they tend to have a bit of an ego about their place in magical society.

They're very polite, of course, but many of the students and teachers both make clear they feel Daybreak is more some bold, artistic experiment and that Nightfall will be defeated by good, old-fashioned wizardry. Those attending Oxford are in for a very condescending week, that's for sure.

Oh hello-

Reira has a bit of a ranking chart. Adult human beings are on the farthest end of this ranking chart- they're the ones she'll trust least for a while, without good reason. Humanoid things more her age are a little easier to hang around without thinking she might get tossed into a bush or something.

Bendy has two legs and two arms and such, but he's not....quite 'human' when it comes to how Reira categorizes things. So while she's never seen anyone like Bendy, he looks 'normal'.

Normal enough to trust more easy, in fact. "I'm not the one upset," she answers rather easily, looking very much like she wants to get out of this situation. "...They just tried to do a test thing, and then got upset about it."

Audibly, the teacher jotting notes mutters fretfully about the amount of power required to 'drain a magical core' or something. Reira glances over as she hears it, and back to Bendy.

"I don't know why they're upset, but it stings a bit." Empathy sucks sometimes.

"A test, huh? What were they testing?" Bendy glances over at the two bawling girls and rolls his eyes. When he hears the teacher muttering about drained magical cores, he thinks he gets what they're fussing over, kinda, but come on.

"Eh, mages make a big deal over the dumbest things." He said with a shrug. He doesn't seem to care at all that he's currently in a room full of them.

"Do they?" There is a chorus of frustrated 'we do NOT!'s, but Reira is already trying to squirm out of the one teenager's grip. "I don't know- they wanted to see if I could do a 'mage spell', since I asked how it was different from every other magic thing," she remarks quietly, somehow managing to escape the cling of the mages.

The mages in turn seem to just accept it as inevitable, torn between getting fussy at Bendy, and just continuing their fussing over the girl. "...they were saying their magic is better, but it's all just magic, I thought..." It feels like saying a different cheesecake is better.

All cheesecake is cheesecake.

"Well, ain't that just like 'em." Bendy tsks, still talking like the mages aren't right there. "Thinkin' them an' their magic's the cat's pajamas. So what if ya can't use it? It ain't nuthin t' be blubberin' over."

After Reira manages to get free though, Bendy decides this is a good time to get away. "Anyway, might as well leave 'em to it. Ya wanna go explorin' around this place?"

"...I didn't know cats have pajamas. I just see them sleep with no clothes, or sometimes necklaces..." Those are collars, but she either doesn't know that word in English yet, or just doesn't consider them collars.

"I guess they found something sad with their test?" she wonders, before nodding furiously at Bendy's suggestion. "Mnh, yeah..! There's not a lot of places I've been allowed to go, so I want to see it..!"

Will they be allowed in most of the places Inside this building? Maybe not, doesn't matter, it's Exploring time and doors (and windows) are probably an illusion.

"I mean they think it's the best thing ever." It's not like Bendy isn't used to having to explain his admittedly antiquated slang to people.

Anyway, time to blow this joint. Bendy starts to lead them out of the room. "Name's Bendy, by the way. What's yours?"

"...I don't think cats would agree," is all Reira has to say to that. But anyway.

"Um- I'm Reira," she introduces. "...if your name is 'Bendy', does that mean you can bend a lot of ways?" As far as she knows, Reira doesn't mean anything. Bendy sounds like it does though, so it's a good question to ask.

Bendy laughed, "Heheh, probably not."

But then he looks a little confused at Reira's question. "Ah, not really? I mean, I guess toons can be pretty flexible under th' right circumstances, but I'm pretty sure Henry only named me that 'cause he liked the sound of it."

"...Toons?" She's going to ignore literally everything else- someone else named her after all, so someone naming Bendy is hardly surprising.

But also, what's a Toon.

"Ya know, cartoons? I'm a cartoon character." He paused and scratched his head. "Or well, a familiar created by somebody who wanted ta make a livin' cartoon character."

Did this kid never watch tv or anything?
soft_focus: (say what now)

[personal profile] soft_focus 2019-04-30 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Reira does Not know cartoons, and stares for a bit.

"...So...." She can grab maybe 20%? Less? Of Bendy's explanation, to conclude her own image of things. "...Someone made a contract, like they did for the Sprites, but made you instead of sprites?"

It's clear. "...What's different between a sprite and a 'cartoon'?"

She probably doesn't know what a TV is.

[personal profile] littledevildarling 2019-05-01 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that about sums it up.

Ah... [He pauses and scratches his head a bit. How do you explain cartoons to someone who's never heard of it before.]

Cartoons are... People draw a bunch a pictures and run 'em through a machine t' make 'em look like they're movin' an' they use that t' tell stories. [He hoped that explanation made enough sense.]

The characters in 'em are just made up, but my old tamer, Joey, wanted t' make the characters from his cartoons into living beings, so he contracted with a daemon t' do it. An' that's how he made me.

[personal profile] soft_focus 2019-05-02 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
[...............It didn't, but she'll work with it.]

Oh... ...if you can make a machine do things like that, why couldn't he just use his own magic to do that... [Reira wonders out loud, before blinking.]

...It's nice that you exist though, [She adds. Just in case it sounded like she thought him existing was bad. It isn't, she thinks.] Someone told me making contracts was a bad thing to do, so I hope nothing bad happened to make you.

[This is as close to 'you're nice' as she will get, for this moment. But you're nice, Bendy.]
littledevildarling: (6)

[personal profile] littledevildarling 2019-05-04 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
[Bendy shrugs.] Joey wasn' a mage. He didn' even know for sure that magic existed til he met the daemon he contracted with.

[He shifts a little bit uncomfortably when Reira brings up "something bad" happening to make him. Uh, yeah. No need to go into that.] Uh, thanks.

[Okay, let's change the subject here... It was then that Bendy thought of something. He pulled a sketch book and a pencil out of hammerspace and quickly drew on a few pages.]

Anyways, that machine I told ya about can' literally make pictures move. It just makes it look like they do. It kinda works like this.

[He held the notebook so Reira could see what he drew: a picture of a ball. Then he flpped several pages quickly enough to create the illusion that the ball was bouncing up and down a couple times.]

Ya draw a bunch a pictures a somethin' with each one a bit different an it looks like it's movin when ya go through 'em fast enough. The machine makes it a lot easier though.

[What mages have to do with knowing about magic, flies over her head. After all- there's plenty of magic things that aren't mages.

This is pretty cool as well though, and she watches with interest as the ball 'bounces'.
] Ohhh...

...Doesn't that hurt their hands...?

[personal profile] littledevildarling 2019-05-05 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Drawin' all those pictures ya mean? Maybe a little. [He chuckled]

I think nowadays they got stuff to make actually drawin' all those pictures easier too, but back when my cartoon was bein' made, it took several months t' make an 11 minute cartoon episode an even longer if ya wanted to make a whole movie.

[Oh the stories Henry told him about that. And with the deadlines Joey had given him being pretty unreasonable in light of that, it was no wonder Henry quit.]

An that don' even cover that somebody's also gotta compose music and record voices fer the characters. It's a lotta work.

Yeah!! [What else could she mean!?]

...That's good then, because I don't think I could wait that long for something that's only '11 minutes'... [Reira remarks with a frown.]

...Did it take even more months for the sounds..?

[Between the cartoon demon and the Existence of Cartoons as Media, apparently Reira is having a harder time understanding the latter.]
