WHERE: various locations
WHEN: May

WARNINGS: self-harm and gore mentions likely, potential RNG seizure visions, FEELS

CLOSED PROMPTS:

a; {Adelaide} - early May, edge of the woods on campus

[Toki hadn't been exactly avoiding Adelaide after the incident, but it seems that way. He had so many things going on the following weeks; worrying over Maverick's contract, confronting Wist about Kano's state of existence, continuing dreams and visions that were taking their toll on his mental state. Adelaide, and confronting what happened between them, had somehow been pushed to the back of it all. Now, he wonders if it's too late to have the discussion, too late to tell her he doesn't hate her, and never could.

He sent a text to Adelaide only this morning, a time and a place to meet. Toki's not sure if she'll show up at all. He doesn't know how she feels, and he should. He should have talked to her earlier. He sits on a fallen log near the edge of the woods. A quiet place that he doesn't particularly get comfort from, but he thinks Adelaide will. No one around to hear them. He'd chosen later in the evening; it's still light enough to see everything, but he doesn't know how the sunlight affects her; if it hurts to be outside during the day and she just doesn't show it.]

b; {Valvatorez} - early May, Val's office

[He's waited a while to apologize. It's not that he's afraid of Valvatorez per se, because Ekkehardt was probably right. It was all in the past, everything Toki saw. Yet, he's still apprehensive as he approaches the professor's office. He apologies a lot, but he's never been particularly good or dignified at it; usually devolving into tears early on, or not quite understanding why he's apologizing beyond making someone upset somehow. Right now, he does know. He knows what he did was wrong, and an overreaction, but in the moment he did it, it seemed the only option and very logical. Toki knocks on the door softly, or softly for him anyway.]

Professor Valvatorez?

c; {Orihime and/or Jolyne} - whenever in May, Aube 405

[Toki hasn't seen Orihime since the end of February. He hasn't contacted her at all, and she hasn't reached out to him either. Or, if she has, he doesn't know about it. He did go through four new phones in the last two months, and though he's still on the network with an updated number, Orihime could have assumed her unanswered messages were him ignoring her. He's on some kind of reconciliation streak at the moment, not formally or for any reason; things just happened that way. So, today, he's going to talk to her.

The last time he saw her was in the first floor common room in Aube. It was late at night, maybe early in the morning. He'd had a vision about her. One where she died, where she was a rotting corpse and her spirit had been claimed by a snake-man of sorts. A snake-man that, for some reason, Orihime thought represented her brother. Of course, Toki doesn't know what happened with that. He knows she's alive, but that's it really. Sometimes he feels like everything would be less awkward, less confusing, if people would clue him in a bit more on things. He understands why they don't; like Orihime hadn't. He's too easily disturbed and frightened and panicked and he'll just get in the way if he knows.

She probably doesn't want to see him, and that's okay. He's prepared for that outcome. He almost texted her, fingers hovering over her robot network icon, but what would he say? A simple "how are you?" after two months of silence? He couldn't do that, though maybe he should have. He was prepared and calm and everything when he knocked on the door of Aube 101, only to be met by some guy he'd talked to once when the kids were hanging around. Orihime had changed rooms. Now, he's here in front of 405. In this hallway where he'd been several times on his way to visit Adelaide and the fish. He had no idea Orihime was right there.

Toki hesitates before knocking. He wants to make this easy for her if she just doesn't want to speak to him again. Okay. He's ready. He knocks loudly and rapidly on the door, intent on appearing cheerful and happy no matter what happens.]

d; {Jail} - beginning late April, Jail's office
-continuation from here-

[Toki was taking a shower when the text arrived, and he never looked at it until someone else texted him several hours later. The ghost line sends him off on thought tangents regarding if there are any ghost students at Daybreak he doesn't know about, then onto whether or not he's already dead and a ghost himself, and it's another several hours before he remembers to write down the appointment time.

The next day, when he checks his scrawled down reminder, he reads it as 8PM. At 3:30, when he looks the map for where her office is, he sees the actual meeting time. It's almost 4:00 before he shows up to knock on the door.]

OPEN PROMPTS:

e; Network

i am seeking recommendations!
give me your choices for service animals that are NOT dogs!
small cute dogs are POSSIBLE or maybe a dalmatian,
BUT i have preference for non-dogs!

f; Cafe de la Lune

[Toki has a table by himself near the front door. His usual cafe companion Kuroko is nowhere in sight. He's also switched from coffee to tea. He examines the contents of the cup every time he take a hesitant sip. He has a notebook and a large old tome spread out on the table in front of him. The cafe is crowded today, and as someone approaches, he slides everything out of the way.]

You can sit here! I'm taking up too much space!

g; The Citadel

[Generally followed by a guard or two, Toki has found ways of escaping them for a few hours at a time. He usually gets different people; no one can stand him two days in a row. That's mostly why they sometimes overlook it when he speeds off before they can catch him. As long as he doesn't leave the school grounds, they haven't seemed to care much.

After having been in the Citadel several times for Cassandra and mission control, Toki's fairly certain he can just walk in there at any time and no one's going to be suspicious. Which is exactly what he's doing. It's a day for exploration and knowledge gathering. The hangar has no interest for him, but he has to bypass it to get to where he wants to be; inspecting Ouroboros and more importantly, Cassandra.]

[Ah, fuck, we're back to this again.]

Not much of a chance, kid. Breathe.

[She sighs.]

Look- odds are, if the medical staff didn't notice anything weird going on with your eye, there ain't anything there. But I didn't survive a decade in my business by not being a paranoid old bitch, so I wanna take a look at it just to double check. It'll give you a chance to watch a seer using their powers, so it'll be a two birds-one stone kinda deal.

And if- that's if, not when- it turns out there's some kinda connection, sewing a protective sigil on an eyepatch for you is gonna take, like. Two minutes, tops. Okay?

[It's... not "fine", exactly, but definitely not a disaster.]

Aaaaand this'd be the part where the lesson comes up. Short version: yes. Long version...

[She leans back in her chair, gesturing absently with her hands while she talks.]

Lotta people hear "seer" and just think "future sight"- from what I heard, that's part of what got you here in the first place. [Ekkehardt only gave her a very brief description of that whole mess, but it was... memorable. Poor Val.] But that ain't exactly it.

Being a seer means being able to see visions of the truth- past, future, or present. Looking past what's there and seeing what is, right down to the core and the heart. Or, when you cut out all the flowery philosophical crap?

Looking directly at reality itself.

[She shrugs.]

Now, reality's one bitch of a complex thing and is basically always changing, so it can get kiiiiiinda hard for your brain to handle, which is why we all got problems. No such thing as a seer without some kinda issue, even if it's just "being super weird". Half the time it's just weird shit you don't understand and didn't wanna see.

But, if you know how to focus your power right and spend enough time learning what the weird shit you see actually means, you can use it to do stuff like seeing through illusions, learning the true nature of an object, detecting magical traps... all that good stuff.

[It's Jail's specialty. She's honestly a little on the weaker side, as seers go, but she's very good at being precise, aiming her power carefully.]

[personal profile] nor_iron_bars 2019-05-03 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[She'd admit that 'reality' and 'the truth' aren't exactly the right words, but it's hard to actually explain. Some things just don't fit into words easily.]

Tends to be a little different for everyone, some people have more of a knack for it than others- but you should be able to, yeah. We're gonna need to work on helping you use your powers anyway, to try and make things a little easier on you, so might as well get some practical stuff in there while we're at it.

Won't know what your learning curve's gonna look like until we start trying. I picked it up pretty quickly, but that was... kinda not optional, at the time. [Given the part where it almost certainly would have killed her if she didn't.] You got a little more breathing room, on this one. [Literally. Thankfully, he doesn't have the context to know that's an accidental pun.]

I've honestly seen worse. ...I mean, I've definitely seen better? But, not the worst.

[She can't pretend that Toki's not a disaster child, but he's not actively trying to murder her right at this particular moment, so. Small mercies.]

[She considers just not answering his question, or making up a more interesting lie, but... well, he is here to learn. And it doesn't seem like he's really talked to other seers much, it might help him to hear more about how it works.]

Mostly, I just couldn't hold my breath that long. [She taps her gasmask with one finger.] This ain't just for show, see.

[personal profile] nor_iron_bars 2019-05-04 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Eh. [She shrugs, looking fairly nonchalant about it.] Real slowly, over the years, but yeah. Seems fair enough- lotta seers have trouble with a major organ, it just ain't usually the lungs. They don't gotta worry 'bout breathing like I do, but I don't gotta worry 'bout my eyesight like they do, so it evens out.

[She sees his concern, and her expression softens a little, gentler than her normal brash confidence- if only a tiny bit.]

Hey, don't get too worked up about it, okay? They don't work too well these days, but they still work well enough to get the job done, and my mask takes care of anything they can't handle anymore. Worst comes to worst, I'll just have to build myself a new pair, and that'll be that.

[Sure, just mad science yourself a fresh set of lungs, why not.]

Coulda done it years ago, to be honest, already got some plans drawn up just in case. Point is...

[She sighs.]

Being a seer means you get kind of a raw deal, yeah. But it ain't a death sentence, if you're lucky- and you got enough luck to make it this far. So did I. Even that much is enough. You're gonna have to learn how to work around it, how to make it work for you, but you don't gotta just deal with the shitty side effects and get nothing in return. We can figure it out.

[Look at her, trying to be all helpful and reassuring. She hates doing this kind of thing, really, it's not her forte at all... but she's not heartless. She can remember being a freaked-out kid trying to figure out what the visions meant, not understanding how they stole the breath from her lungs. If she can offer him some decent advice... well, she's got to try.]

[Excuse you, Toki, the word you're looking for is 'awesome'. Robot lungs would be awesome. Jail would probably build herself cool cyborg parts even if she didn't medically require them.]

Nah, it's kinda a toss-up. There's almost always something physical, but you get the occasional seer with purely mental side effects, and even if it is the body, there's a buncha stuff it can be. Good news is that it ain't always a "getting worse" kinda deal- sometimes it'll just stabilize as one thing, like fainting spells or headaches, and stay there.

Honestly? Odds are, if you survived the first couple hours, you're probably gonna make it a while. ...But there's no reason not to stack the deck a little, when we can. [She winks.] How 'bout I take a look at that eye, to start with, then we'll see where we need to go from there.
nor_iron_bars: And in my soul am free (No that ain't your style)

[personal profile] nor_iron_bars 2019-05-05 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Right. [Jail tilts her head slightly, eyes narrowing.] Now, kid... look me in the eye.

[There's an odd look to her, suddenly- something strange in her gaze as she seems to be looking right through him, piercing in a way that has nothing to do with the physical.]

[There's a long, tense moment... then she relaxes and lets out a breath, shaking her head.]

Nah, I'm not seeing shit there. The eye's definitely been around some weird stuff, but there's nothing connected to it right now but you- anything too recent'd leave a mark. If anyone but you used it, that was a long time ago.

[personal profile] nor_iron_bars 2019-05-05 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[She shrugs.] It ain't carbon-dating, kid, I can't be sure. Could be that, yeah. Could be something else. We don't know.

Least you know nobody's using it to spy on you. Just... take the win for five seconds, okay? [Maybe appreciate the relief for a couple moments before you get paranoid about something else, it's probably better for your blood pressure.]

See, that's the other reason we're doing these lessons- being a seer ain't just having visions. You're a seer all the time, not just when some weird-ass foretelling decides to smack you in the brain, the Sight doesn't just go away in between visions.

Trying to stop visions is a fucking minefield of bullshit that backfires half the time- [She has just enough decency to look ruefully sympathetic about that, recalling his experience with the bracelet.] -but using your Sight outside of visions? That's plenty doable.
nor_iron_bars: And in my soul am free (No that ain't your style)

[personal profile] nor_iron_bars 2019-05-07 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
All the time is pushing it- overuse it and you're risking some serious damage. But it's hard to do that by accident, you'll be able to tell if you're pushing yourself too far.

[She winces slightly.]

The feeling ain't exactly easy to miss, trust me.

But yeah, if you play your cards right, you can get a lot outta the Sight. Just gotta learn how to pick the time and place.
nor_iron_bars: Alone that soar above (Keep doing what you're doing)

[personal profile] nor_iron_bars 2019-05-10 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Could be, yeah- stuff like that can creep in without noticing, at first. [Or someone could have just told him at some point and he forgot, she's not sure enough to bet money on it either way.]

I'm gonna suggest starting off with something right in front of you, first. The present's easiest to See, 'cause it's right there. Past is a little harder, 'cause it's further away from where you are now, but it's stable. Future's the worst, 'cause it's always changing- like trying to hit a moving target.
nor_iron_bars: And in my soul am free (No that ain't your style)

[personal profile] nor_iron_bars 2019-05-11 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
[It's what she literally just did right in front of you, Toki...]

Okay, maybe stop staring at the pen like you're trying to set in on fire with your eyes, it ain't gonna work like that. Probably. [I mean, magic school. You never know.]

It's about focusing your power, staring harder's not gonna do shit. Hell, you could have your eyes closed and it wouldn't change a damn thing. Just... [Argh, how to explain this... teaching people to make things is so much easier, it's way more clear-cut.] Think of what you want to learn about this thing, what you're trying to find out. Focus on that.

Congrats on reading the label. [Her tone is dry, but not unkind.]

Don't work yourself up too much, kid- beating your head against a brick wall ain't gonna bring it down real fast. Relax a little.

[How to put instinct into clear instruction, describe this in a way that's going to work for him... huh, there's a thought.]

Look, you're in Atchison's class, right?

That means you understand why a debt's important magically, right? Someone pays their end of the bargain, you gotta pay yours, or shit gets dire. That's the core of a deal, when you get right down to it.

So...

[She spreads her hands, smiling benevolently- with maybe just a hint of mischief.]

Make it pay up.

You got your power by contract, but you paid for it same way as any seer does- with every last little bit of pain in the ass bullshit your power puts you through. Dealing with that crap is our sacrifice in exchange for getting to use this power, so you know you've delivered your part already. And sacrifice like that, payment like that... gives you the right to call on it, magically. It's got a kinda power to it.

You don't gotta strain and flail to pull out the power, it's yours by right. Just tell it to pay the fuck up already and wait, don't gotta get all stressed about it. You're not the one who's debt just came due here...

[She's not sure if this is going to help, honestly, but she figures that putting it in a more familiar framework for him can't hurt. If nothing else, the confidence boost might help him relax. To stop him from seeing his power as something foreign and scary and start seeing it as something understandable, that has rules...]
