[The spring decorations for the infirmary stay - the enchanted flowers don’t exactly wilt, after all. They bring a lot of color to the infirmary, and it’s still time for the blooms.

The approach of summer also means Hieke is finally getting into the spring cleaning vibe. While he’ll always be there and ready to take care of students and staff alike, he’s getting rid of some of the accumulated trash in the infirmary. Expired potions and medications, dirty implements, sensitive documents. And he doesn’t even have to leave the infirmary to do it! At first glance, people will see Hieke tossing trash into seemingly thin air, where it kind of just...gets stuck. At closer inspection, though, you can see what appears to just simply be a cube of translucent gelatin.

It makes things go quickly, at least.]

Alright! This is pretty important, so listen up.

[The latest module Hieke’s been teaching has been potion crafting. Specifically the crafting of healing potions, because, well. Obviously. There’s been a class on ingredient identification, a class about brewing procedure, and now...it’s time for the practical.

Which means gathering the supplies necessary to make potions, which means a trip to the Outlands.

The class stands in a cavern, lit up by glowing mushrooms. It’s still dim, though, and a student with average human senses might have a hard time seeing anything - which is why Hieke has provided flashlights. The cavern is huge and sprawling, and it’s teeming with plantlife. It’s basically a jungle contained within rock. There’s a large clearing, where Hieke has set up several brewing stations - they look more appropriate for a chemistry classroom than a wizard school. Bunsen burners and glass vials instead of cauldrons on a campfire.]

You have an hour to find what you need and make a basic healing potion. Hopefully that’s enough time, but if you have any difficulties finding the right things or you don’t have enough time to brew come talk to me and I’ll see if you deserve an extension.

Be very careful, though, and if you need me or encounter anything you don’t recognize - or any sort of creature - don’t hesitate to use your sigils to summon me to you.

[Hieke can be found in the clearing for most of the trip, barring any type of emergency he needs to be summoned to.

He's working away on his own potions, it seems, using this time to work on the infirmary's stock - but as soon as a student approaches, he's looking up with a crooked smile.]

[A week and a half later than he should have, Toki's finally ventured to the infirmary. He's less apprehensive about discussing things after learning the eyes from his visions are not the daemon he has a contract with.]

Hieke~! Hello~! I need you to check something for me~!

[He is unaware of the text Maverick sent.]

Is it your eye?

[He doesn't even look up from where he's currently tossing expired potions into the gelatinous cube.]

Because it might be a bit late for that.

Who told you!?

[Toki watches the cube for a minute. He concludes it's a solid portal of some sort, and will eventually transport the potions to a recycling facility or something.]

Nevermind! It doesn't matter! Now I don't have to explain! It's not really too late, because Rex and Maverick already healed it, and Professor Jailbreak said it wasn't being used by a daemon, but I want to know if there's like any weird infection or magical things going on because Maverick's healing is contract power and I wasn't awake to know exactly what Rex did! Just a precaution~!

Maverick. He was worried about you.

[The cube wobbles in place, before the potion bottles begin to slowly dissolve and spread throughout it.]

A weird magical infection? Most magic doesn't work like that.

[But still, better safe than sorry, he supposes. Also, what does Rex have to do with anything...?]

[ Field trips like these are the best, when the task is to go around and fill your pockets with whatever you think you'll need, and Kano, environmental hazard that he is, has unlimited pocket space and the packrat tendency to take more than he needs and sorts them out later. He's sure some of these Outlands leaves/rocks/dirt/whatever will come in handy someday, somehow. Snakes live in places like this, right? Right.

He's pretty happy to be outside, allowed off campus by the guards only because Hieke is also here supervising, so his actions are annoyingly limited to foraging. He makes sure Hieke is either within earshot or within his line of sight at all times, twirling a Sharpie in one hand and every time Hieke makes the mistake of glancing his direction and they make eye contact, he draws Hieke's symbol on the back of his arm. Come here a sec. ]

[Kano learning his sigil might be one of the worst things that could have happened.

Hieke gets drawn over, and he lets out a sigh once he rematerializes.]

You know, I did give you a sigil you could use. Drawing on yourself is unnecessary.

[But he can be professional!]

What do you need?

[ Kano might be one of the people who needs it most, but he'll use it in instances like this and not when people are actively dying all around him ig. He laughs when Hieke re-materializes (again) and rolls his sleeves up so he'll have an open canvas on his other arm to draw the sigils on too; they're drawn haphazardly across his arm, overlapped on places with no care for keeping them neat and separate. ]

I need more vials and I'm asking for a time extension!!

[ It has not even been fifteen minutes. ]

Also~ I was wondering~ For a healing potion, do the ingredients have to be very fresh? How long does the potion keep after its brewed? Say that I want to create a larger batch- do I just multiply everything byyyyyy a thousand, or is it like cooking where multiplying is a big no-no?

It's too early for an extension. Ask again later.

[He will, at least, hand over another vial. Just the one, though, because it's not like Kano specified.]

I doubt you'll be able to find enough things to create a thousand more potions, but the recipe is idiot proof. That means multiplying isn't going to hurt your chances of success.

How long the potion keeps depends on how well you do at making it. A sub par potion may only be viable for minutes.

[ He occasionally snatches things from the air before they can reach Hieke's gelatinous helper, inspecting labels and apparatus before putting them in more ordinary bins...for a given value of ordinary. Noticeably, anything that can be classified as medical waste goes into something that looks more like a puzzle box than a wastebin. It emits brief bursts of magical energy.

Mostly, though, he keeps an eye on what Hieke's throwing out, busily typing away on his laptop. Cataloguing everything. ]

Is that healthy for them?

It's not unhealthy.

[He watches the cube wobble, slowly dissolving the potions inside of it.]

I don't think it gets any value out of what's being thrown in, but it's not hurting it.

Interesting. It's certainly a hassle-free way of getting rid of waste.

[ He glances over to watch it wobble, too. ]

How often does it need to be fed? [ Considering it's being kept in the infirmary, it seems like a relevant question. Plus, if Hieke has to go away for any reason, he can keep feeding it on a schedule. ]

At least weekly, I would think. Still, it mostly preys on things by taking advantage of anything that doesn't notice it instead of hunting outright...

[He stands frozen at the entry. He's walked into the Outlands recently, sure, but that was different. That was with Ekkehardt who had promised him, who'd shown him passage explicitly for the sake of passing quickly from the Academy to his home. This... this was directly in the Outlands.

He can't make himself go in.

He's supposed to be a TA, help supervise, offer advice, but he can't. He can't go in there.]

[Hieke notices Héctor standing there - it'd be hard not to notice him, the way he's frozen in the portal, but...

He frowns. He doesn't know much about the man, but he does know he spent some time in the Outlands.]

Everything alright, Héctor?

[He comes to stand next to him, head tilted to the side.]

[He shakes his head. No. No, he's not alright. He just barely manages to tear his eyes from the portal ahead to glance around them. They're alone.]

I can't. I can't go in.

Infirmary

*Claire has been at this school long enough to know, more or less, where everything is in the infirmary. So she doesn't wait around for anyone to come help her out she'll just help herself to some new bandages because her wounds haven't fully healed yet and need to be repacked.*

*But she has learned how to do this more or less herself, even if honestly she should let someone help her with the wound on her back, so she'll just gather what she needs and set-up on a bed as if she owns the place.*

Are you going to replace that?

[Hieke doesn't care what Claire gets up to. Sure, she's an injured student, but after dealing with Maverick and everybody else, he's learned there's no point in going out of his way. There's no point healing someone who's just going to get mad about it. He doesn't get paid enough for that.

Still, she's taking up space, and he can't just let her have free reign of the place.]

I burn used bandages, no telling what blood could do in the wrong hands here.

*She knew what he meant, but that hardly was any fun. Plus whoever this new not-Ekkehardt nurse is needs to get used to her. She's working on the more accessible wounds for the moment, bandaging up her arm and face.*

So we have a real nurse again. Have people taken bets how long you'll last?

One day in early spring, a few guards enter the infirmary with these two idiots. With intervention from Ekkehardt, no one's completely dead yet. The consensus among the guards is that the escape attempt was an intentional jumping right out the window. Despite that being a completely believable incident to have occurred, the truth is it was an accident.]

[Why does this keep happening. Honestly, someone needs to figure out how to keep those two separate.

Hieke grimaces at the state of them, running a hand through his hair. He looks at the guards, before motioning back to the beds.]

Place them down there, please.

[yokeye]

[The guards grumble and do as they're told, none too gently.]

"They jumped."

[That's all the information Hieke gets, as the guards leave to stand in the hallway. They will continue their duty outside the infirmary, hanging around and scowling, just in case.]

An hour or two ago, Jailbreak deposited two students in the infirmary who had, apparently, been fighting. Jailbreak had blasted them with sleeping gas to stop it from getting out of hand.

Now, finally, Kohaku was starting to stir. And groan.

"Mmmphh. Oh fuck my head."

Consciousness to profanity in 4.2 seconds.

Ah, there's movement finally.

Hieke looks over from his desk, wondering if it's worth getting up, before deciding against it. He already made sure there weren't any major injuries, now it's a matter of waiting to see what the side effects were.

"Good morning."

Kohaku didn’t immediately reply, instead taking a moment to take stock. Her head was pounding. Her eyes hurt. Her shin felt like it had a nasty bruise of some kind. Her neck shot little bolts of pain into her skull every time she shifted her head. Her ribs and back aches like hell. Her knuckles were throbbing like she’d been punching someone. She was half dressed in only a tank top and sweatpants...and she had no memory of anything after getting dressed this morning.

She was going to have to ask.

“Why do I feel like shit?”
