Surf's Up

Beaches of the Azores

[ Growing up in a beach town, Snow was pretty familiar with the ins and outs of beach life and, more importantly, beach sports! With the resorts at the Azores well-stocked with equipment, Daybreak's trusty coach was out early prepping surf boards, boogie boards, wake boards, some parasails, and some snorkeling and scuba gear for a long day of fun (and fitness!) in the sun! Snow himself is in attendance in red lifeguard swim trunks, beaming brightly as usual. ]

All right guys, listen up! If you know how to use the gear, you're free to get started. If you don't, I'll be giving lessons all week so I need you to sign up for the class you want. We're starting with basic swimming, so any of you who can't swim I expect to see on the list. I don't want to have to be pulling someone out of the water every five minutes, OK?

[ The spiel will carry on for a bit as Snow goes over general safety and use rules, nothing particularly out of the ordinary ]

All right! Now that that's out of the way, who's ready to get in the water?

[OOC: Feel free to post top levels for general beach antics and tag around in this post, it's open to everyone. Keith and Jolyne will have a separate top level where Snow can discuss their respective punishments for the whole "attacking and setting on fire" deal but may otherwise top-level as normal ]

Snow's Office

[ When they are both on campus, Keith and Jolyne will get a simultaneous summons to Snow's office for a discussion ]

[ After getting everyone going, Snow pulled the two n'er do wells aside for a bit of a talk ]

[Oh fuck her life, of course this is coming up now of all times and she's making the most annoyed little noise as they're being pulled off to the side. Her stance is immediately defensive, arms crossed over her chest and every muscle in her body seeming disgustingly tight.

Fight or flight, it's a terrible thing.]

[Y'know he genuinely thought he'd be more pissed off about this eventuality, but somehow dealing with the apocalypse, then dealing with a nuke being detonated in Australia has managed to turn his annoyance with both Snow and Jolyne into afterthoughts.

Well. Jolyne's less of an afterthought after her attempt to smear him on the network, but you know what... he's not going to start this whole thing off by being hostile. Just tense and obviously not thrilled about being here.[

Yeah?

Not fighting right when you walk in, that's good. Both of you can take a seat, we'll try to be quick.

Would fuckin' appreciate it. [That's a little more snippy than she meant it to be, but she's going to take a seat and not remotely look in Keith's direction. She's not addressing him or being violent at least and her familiar is nowhere to be seen, so progress?]

[Jolyne is also getting the silent treatment as Keith takes his damn seat.]

Now what.

Had a talk with the rest of the staff. Watched some security footage. Now that you guys're all healed up, unfortunately we gotta talk punishment.

Jolyne, it's pretty clear you attacked Keith first, unprovoked.

[ Should she start to protest here, he'll raise a hand to stop her ]

I know you two had a falling out at the dance, but here we fight with our words first, and fists only if all other options have failed. So you're gonna be on heavy duty for two weeks. You'll be hauling things around campus. See if that can burn off some excess energy.

Keith, you were in your right to defend yourself, but you DID set her on fire. The only thing more dangerous than a weapon is one in the hands of someone who doesn't know how to use it right. You'll have additional training courses for the next two weeks, focusing on that sword of yours. All clear?

[Oh, she's speaking up, but it's not to try and protest.]

Never denied that. [Which is true, and she's not trying to fight this in any way. Even if she's not happy about this outcome, having thought that maybe she'd gotten out of this without any consequences to speak of. The one fucking thing she gets nailed for and it's what she'd call the most mundane of them. Great. Good.]

Oh, goody, I get to be free labor for the school. [She's sighing and just slumping down into her chair. She's not arguing being punished, really, just that this is the most bullshit way going about it, in her opinion.]

It's not excess energy, but fine, I guess.

[Keith blinks. It's pretty readily obvious that this is not what he was expecting to hear Snow say, after how the initial incident was handled. Though he's still frowning, there's a pinch of mild confusion in his expression now that wasn't there before.

Then he gives Jolyne a look, like he's half waiting for her to snap out of it and start getting belligerent. You know. Be more Jolyne???

But when that doesn't actually happen, he turns back to Snow to ask an earnest question.]

Alright. So there were tapes. [.... which he'll keep in mind.] If that's true, you know I told her to back off and I was only pushed to use fire at the last second when Jolyne and her familiar were about to punch me in the face.

What exactly would you have suggested I do instead?

[ Snow gives Jolyne a bit of a shit-eating grin ]

We don't do free labor at Daybreak! You're just paying off the cost of medical for the two of you from the shit you started.

[ He turns to Keith, slightly more serious ]

In that situation, if you had a bit more combat proficiency and control over your abilities I think you could have fended her off with your bare hands, or not accidentally set her on fire. Either way, we're just trying to get you to that point.

[She's immediately rolling her eyes at that, but isn't protesting about this shit too much. It's their choice, she guesses, what good is it going to do her to argue the point?]

Still standing by the not excess energy thing, but whatever. What fucking time am I supposed to be doing this shit and where? [Is she mad? Yes. Is she going to lash out? Nope.]

[For his part, Keith's taking a deep breath. He's stil got heavy misgivings about Jolyne's zen here and he fully expects her to hurl abuse at him the second Snow is out of earshot, but -- that's a problem for future him.]

Alright. Who's doing the training?

[Not that this matters a whole lot cuz he absolutely plans on skipping this shit if they aren't going to be flexible on the schedule. Like hell he's changing the plans he already has because Jolyne jumped him and turned out to be stupidly flammable. That said? The training's not even sounding bad or unreasonable.]

Jolyne'll be starting at 4:00 AM, shifts as I understand run about two hours. You'll need to report to the Admin building for instructions each day.

As for Keith, you'll be training with Professor Kiske, he's good with swords and elements so he should get you in shape no problem. Contact him for your full schedule.

[Congrats, Snow, she's officially bristling on this whole thing. She was fine with this, mostly, until this point.]

You can't be fucking serious. [Maybe a little less angry and a lot more confused that anything starts at four in the morning. Hell, she doesn't even go to do her morning shit until at least five-thirty.]

[Excuse him while he lets out an amused huff at Jolyne's expense.]

4AM workout? Could be worse.

[keith, YOU ARE NOT HELPING AT ALL HERE. But considering he's gotten himself expelled from school for similar offenses in the past, he knows she's getting off light for what could be treated as a felony case. By the time he turns to Snow, his expressions wiped clean of any amusement.]

Direct further questions to him, got it. But seriously, what the helll does it take to get kicked out of this school? Not saying I want her ass gone, but do we just get an infinite number of chances because you're all that desperate for people to fight Nightfall?

[ Snow shrugs at Jolyne's outrage ]

I'm not the one who attacked a fellow student with insufficient provocation. Hopefully you'll learn something from the experience. Like not doing that.

[ He turns to Keith ]

Expelling students doesn't really do the student any good. We're here to help you learn how to use your abilities and to give you the best opportunities we can. Expelling someone means we gave up on them, and Daybreak doesn't give up on people.

[Oh, she's absolutely glaring daggers at Snow, good grief. And you know what, she's had enough of this shit.]

Honestly, starting to think prison was the better option. [Stop that. But she's moving to stand and leave unless someone's keen on stopping her. She's mad as hell and needs to get that worked out.]

[Snow's response seems to throw Keith for a moment. On the one hand, it just sounds like a nicer way of saying "y'all are non expendable resources" but ...it still seems to give him something to mull over for later. He falls silent, evidently done with all other potentially quippy remarks for the time being.

He's not even going to ask Jolyne what all she almost went to prison for, though that certainly didn't escape his attention. Another time, maybe.

He, too, gets to his feet. Definitely a whole lot less mad than he was when he entered the room, and definitely not blowing off as much steam as Jolyne right now.]

Alright. Was there anything else?

We do have a big prison aid program if you wanna do that. I can put in a good word.

[ He's smirking, but he also doesn't sound like he's joking. He then turns to Keith. ]

You're both free to go. I hope I'll hear good things about both of your work.

Fuck you, you know what I fuckin' mean. [No one knows what you mean, basically ever, Jolyne. But she's already half-way through that damn door by the time he's in the middle of saying that they can leave.

This is just her life, isn't it?]

[Keith at least waits for Snow to be done talking before he starts heading towards the door. Once he gets there though, and when he's sure Jolyne's out of earshot, he does turn back to Snow.]

Guess I was wrong about you.
