Who: Nekane, their class and you. +1 thread with Hieke.
What: Nekane's poor health finally catches up to them. Later they attempt to stage a jailbreak from the infirmary.
When: July 18th
Where: Their classroom and then a random hallway. Finally the infirmary.
Warnings: None. I will update this if something changes.
Classroom - Open
[Nekane is aware summer classes are not being held right now but since a few people expressed interest in urban legends and whatnot, so they'll hold one class to see if it'd be worth keeping it going. More work, but they're fine with more work. That was the plan anyway but they...have been having troubles. The Herald was one thing but the memories and the fall out from that event...well, they've dealt with it by not dealing with it.
Despite the fact that they were the one to set this up, they're actually late and once they do arrive they look like hell. They're paler then usual, their hair is coming out of its braid and those with sharp eyes may notice bruises that line the cracks all over their face.
But they're going to work. If they don't then they have to sit still and Nekane refuses to.]
Right...we're going to do some Q&A shit right now. Name a legend and I'll go over it.
[They sit down in a chair because Nekane knows they'll fall if they don't. Breathe.]
Shoot. I'll be here all day.
A Hallway - locked to Hieke
[It is a little over half the day already and Nekane feels that they are going to drop dead. The heat is unbearable and putting on cooler clothing would help but they won't. They're well aware they've pushed their shadow ability too far and it's taking a toll on their body. Again.
Nekane can feel the stress piling up. Their head is pounding and they can feel black sludge start to leak out of the cracks all over their body. But they have things to do and their damn body needs to work!]
Fuck...fuck off.
[They're not sure when it happens but finally their legs give out and they slam against the ground. Nekane breathes harshly as they try and fail to push themself back up.]
Get up. Get up, damnit!
The Infirmary - Open
[After getting dragged into the infirmary Nekane waits out anyone who looks them over with deflection and non-answers. The Academy had to know how their powers worked so it's already on file and they don't have to (or want to) repeat themself. Bed rest is the best suggestion. They do not have to do anything for classes for now and they are indeed in-between jobs, but Nekane knows there is a lot of personal work they still need to do.
They wait until they think no one is still in the infirmary and when they are sure they're alone, they make their move. Going out the door in their state won't work so...
Anyone who is still in or outside of the infirmary will hear a loud crash. Unfortunately for Nekane, running on very little sleep makes their hand-eye coordination utterly terrible and they crashed into something. Many things. They know stealth is out the window so they make a snap decision.
They are halfway out the window by the time someone walks in. Nekane would be farther out but even though their wings are just bone they're still bulky and they're stuck.
...oops?]

There's always been a part of him compelled to help others, and seeing Nekane on the ground brings that out of him. He darts to their side, reaching a hand out to them.]
Nekane? [He doesn't know them very well. He knows the details on their chart and he's seen them at meetings, but he's never spoken to them before.] What happened?
[And he'll just...try to help get them into a sitting position.]
no subject
But they do not care because they have work to do.
The detective cannot hide the flinch when Hieke touches them. Getting into a sitting position helped a little bit.]
Not a damn thing. Just...fell.
[It is not exactly a lie but they know it's a bad one. The black sludge still leaking out of the cracks on their face clearly show it wasn't just a fall.]
no subject
[He frowns, resting his hands on his knees as he crouches next to them. He, admittedly, does not understand much about them. He's read their chart, sure, and he knows what their general baseline of health is, but he doesn't really understand how it works. It's out of his realm of knowledge.
It's just one of the many things about Daybreak that makes him realize how limited his knowledge is.]
We should get you to the infirmary...
[Which isn't a suggestion. It's a demand. Hieke pushes himself back to his feet, before reaching out to help Nekane up.]
no subject
It's fine. Everything is fine.
Nekane shakes their head and grinds out a sharp reply.]
Fuck no. I'm not going. I'm...this is normal.
[It's not and it's obvious it's not. But it is clear Nekane has no intention of willingly going to the infirmary.]
no subject
Hieke frowns. He doesn't think in their state that Nekane can get very far, which is concerning enough, but it does make his job just a little bit easier.]
I don't think you have much of a choice, unless you can walk of your own power.
[He hauls Nekane up - he's stronger than he looks - and begins the trek to the infirmary.]
C'mon.
no subject
The other man hauls them up and Nekane immediately tries pulling away. They...don't like being touched. They really don't. But the detective can feel their knees start to buckle without support and their damn body start to rebel against Nekane.]
...fine. Fucking great.
[For a little while. Nekane will not stay there for long if they can help it. Even if it means breaking out.]
no subject
[It's not a very long trip to the infirmary, thankfully. Hieke's able to navigate them there with practically no difficulties, run ins, or anything else that would make the trip longer.
And once they're there, he leads Nekane to the beds, before unceremoniously depositing them on one.]
Now...hold still for a moment.
[Now that they're in the infirmary and not just in the hallway, Hieke takes a moment to really look over Nekane - and scan them with his magic to really get an idea of how they're faring.]
no subject
Being dumped on a bed produces nothing but a grunt from the detective but being told to hold still has the opposite effect. They drum their fingers on whatever is in reach, bounce their leg and just in general are a fidgety bundle of nerves. It is an unconscious action on their part rather then an attempt to annoy Hieke. They're just that bad at sitting still.
As for Nekane's health...it's bad and now obvious they had lied when it came to health-related questions that may have been asked in the past. Overworked, underweight and severely lacking in sleep, they're a product of their own neglect. But as to what caused them to collapse, it seems that Nekane pushed their own shadow manipulation to far and it re-bounded back onto them. The cracks on their face are not new and Nekane knew the sludge was a warning sign.
They just ignored it.]
...you know you could ask me about my damn health rather then poke around.
[Nekane is aware of what Hieke is doing, paranoid as they were. They don't mind, per say, but that all depends on where Hieke continues to look. Their body is one thing. Their soul is a whole other matter.]
no subject
[Which is rich, coming from Hieke. The man rarely tells the truth about anything.
But he doesn't probe too deeply. He's not concerned with the status of Nekane's soul - that's quite frankly above his pay grade - but their body concerns him.
And that's something he can actually fix.]
How long has it been since you've eaten?
no subject
[By which they mean not at all. In the words of the detective's former boss, "Fuck telling the truth."
Nekane is aware their body is basically held together by pritt stick and spite. The probe is slowly ticking them off but Hieke stays in his lane and doesn't dig deeper. More importantly there haven't been any suggestions of a physical examination. They'd sooner throw themself out the window.
They shrug at Hieke's question.]
Few hours ago. I don't like eating big meals. Feel like shit if I do.
[A half-truth. They "ate" if eating sugar cubes because one was bored while drinking coffee counted as eating. But Nekane honestly did not eat big meals when they did eat properly.]
no subject
[Don't make him actually check the contents of your stomach, Nekane.]
I know it's unpleasant, but you should eat something. And rest. And...
[He gestures at his own face.]
Do you want that cleaned up?
no subject
I'll come here after eating a big meal and puke in your damn trash cans if it gets the fucking point across.
[Gross. But they mean it. They've never been good at eating a lot at once. Not since...a long time ago.
Nekane shakes their head.]
It's fine. This crap cleans itself up eventually and you can't do shit about the cracks anyway.
[It's permanently part of them.]
no subject
[Keeping the gelatinous cube fed is very important! Also, Hieke's trying to get better at this whole "bedside manner" thing.
He's not sure it's worth it.]
It doesn't look like it's pleasant, though.
[It's very...goopy.]
no subject
Nekane fixes Hieke with a confused look.]
...the fuck? "Globbagool"?
[Idly they swipe at some of the goop seeping from one of the cracks on their face. It smears but eventually seeps back into their skin. It is still dripping out but evidently it takes care of itself...once Nekane actually takes care of themself.
But that doesn't matter. They're more interested in whatever a Globbagool is.]
no subject
Yeah, Globbagool.
[He watches as the sludge, shadows, whatever it is, fades back into their skin. Huh. Well, at least that means it shouldn't stain anything?]
You haven't met?
no subject
Nope. Can I?
[Evidently the easiest way to distract the detective from grumbling about being called out on their terrible health is to give them something they've never seen before.]
no subject
He raises an eyebrow at him.]
I mean, sure, but they're not much of a talker.
[He takes a step back, before moving to the door.]
I'll just be a moment.
no subject
It'll give me shit to do since you want me to rest.
[Even if it won't take long to figure things out.
Hieke leaves and Nekane realizes they could duck out while he's gone. They don't know what Hieke is capable of and yes, tracking Nekane down is easy since they have an office here. But they could just leave.
Leave...and miss seeing something they haven't before. It's not the first time Nekane has cursed out their need for information and it won't be the last. So when Hieke comes back, Nekane is out of the bed and pacing back and forward.
Evidently waiting even that long is too much for them.]
no subject
You're not doing a very good job of resting.
[But he steps into the room anyways, followed by...a cube. It might take Nekane a moment to even notice the daemon is being followed by anything, as despite the fact the cube takes up much of the room, it's completely transparent. It might just look like he's being followed by some floating vials and used bandages at first, but Glabbagool is large, cuboid, and very jiggly.]
Anyways, this is Glabbagool. I brought them here from the Outlands.
[He motions to the cube, being careful not to touch it.]
It disolves anything it comes in contact with, so it's pretty handy.
no subject
[They figured their inability to sit still even while sitting should have tipped Hieke off.
But they honestly don't care about it anymore and Nekane seems a little more alert when examining the large, jiggly cube. The second Hieke mentions that Glabbagool dissolves anything it touches, Nekane has to resist the sudden urge to just start tossing things in to see what the limit to 'everything' really is.]
That is fucking handy. Where exactly in the Outlands did you find them?
[They want one.
Please do not give Nekane one.]no subject
[Honestly, Nekane, he doesn't want to baby you.]
A cave.
[Very descriptive, Hieke.]
It was more like Globbagool found us. I don't know if I could get back there if I tried.
[Which is, of course, a complete and utter lie. He knows exactly where he found them, and he could go back there immediately. Better to pretend like he doesn't know, though.]
Most of it's species are hostile.
no subject
But they do actually sit back down, although mainly due to the fact they can get a better look from there. Present Nekane with something to keep their mind occupied with and they'll usually do what someone says, apparently.]
Pretty good way of getting rid of evidence and shit like that.
[...that's not something a detective should say. but it's honestly not a lie. It is a good way.]
Any particular reason why it isn't? Unless you got lucky or whatever.
no subject
But this is good to know, actually.]
It makes getting rid of waste around the infirmary very easy, certainly.
[There's not a whole lot of evidence to go around.]
And I'm not so sure. This one seems to have a higher level of intelligence than the rest, so that might be why.
