A Birthday Boy
Who: James, Keith and the people invited to James' birthday party (Toki, Ana, Adelaide, Nana, Ruby, Nadia, Allura & Yuya!)
When: August 13th (Keith part), August 18th (Party)
What: James' birthday (spent at home in Arizona) & James' Soleil birthday party, spent at a Café de la Lune in Soleil.
Warnings: None for party, mentions of NSFW in Keith & James', though anything explicit will be moved off-comm.
[ All people listed above will have received a text message on August 15th. ]
Hey there!
I'm currently out of the country, but my birthday passed recently and I'd like to celebrate with my friends a little once I return home. Are you free on August 18th? I'd love to get a group together and go down to Café de la Lune for the afternoon. It'll be my treat.
No worries if you're not free that day, but I'd love to see you there!
[ On the actual day of, everyone will find that James has reserved the biggest table in the café so everyone can fit comfortably. He's already ordered a few pastries for everyone and is more than willing to order more. James is pretty much beaming. Also his toad is here. Just sitting on his shoulder. Occasionally being fed bits of cake from a special toad-reserved spoon. ]
Thank you all for coming! If I'm honest, I actually had a bit of trouble making friends when I came here. That was new to me. I'm all the more happy to have met all of you. You made me look forward to coming back to France after vacation.
((Feel free to post open top levels and just chit-chat with one another / interrupt conversations, as it tends to happen at group tables. Also no pressure to tag in, anyone who doesn't will just be seen as having been busy that day and not as having skipped his party, haha.))

[ And he really doesn't feel like crashing through a roof on his birthday - also not on any other days, but his birthday especially.
They move to the porch and James leans gently on the railing, looking towards the setting sun. The whole desert seems to be glowing orange. ]
Thanks again for coming along to Arizona, by the way. This is a far better way to turn 19 than anything else I might have thought off alone.
no subject
]You really wanted to turn 19 out in the middle of nowhere?
[There's a faint smile as he teases, but this is easier to talk about. He's... glad to have come back to his hometown, but it doesn't come without a sense of melancholy.]
no subject
[ James shakes his head softly, amused. ]
The desert may be the middle of nowhere, but it's a nostalgic middle of nowhere. And being with you and Cosmo.... Well, it feels really right for who I am by now.
[ Between their hometown and Keith's desert shack, this was a day that at least half-way helped bridge the gap between his past and his present. Keith belongs firmly to both Arizona and Daybreak for James, but now more than ever the pieces feel like they all belong together. Birthdays might make James a little sappy though. ]

Wish the toad was here, too.
[The whole family would be here, then. But that's a thought Keith keeps to himself because fuck that's a lot of sentimentality for no good reason.]
Don't think the view would impress him much... heh.
[He turns back to look out at the horizon as the sky turns shades of indigo at the points furthest from the sun.]
So who are you now?
[Itr's a flippant question, though not for a lack of genuine curiosity. The last time Keith had asked, James had replied that he didn't know. That he was still finding his way.]
no subject
James figures he wouldn't like the desert much though. Always more one for moisture, that toad.
But then Keith asks the second question and it nips any further toad speculations in the bud. James hadn't actually had an answer laid out to this. He hums thoughtfully as he stares into the distance. ]
Hm. Not quite the soldier I wanted to be, that's for sure. Maybe 'warrior' fits it better. A warrior against Nightfall. Daybreak Academy's student council vice president. I still think a lot of things at that school are all wrong, but that's why I'm committed to making it better. Your boyfriend. Proud toad-owner. Those kinds of things.
no subject
Presumably this is what people say being in love is like.
But it just makes Keith want to scrub at his face and hang his head.]
Okay, warrior. Come here a sec?
no subject
[ James moves over and sits down next to Keith, on the side not occupied by Cosmo, without delay or complaint. Leaning onto one another, if that is what Keith has in mind, sounds like a pretty good way to wait out the rest of the setting sun. Extremely cheesy, but James has never been averse to romance clichés. ]
no subject
He draws back a little, then adding a little sheepishly:]
Just wanted to do that.
no subject
Good. I want to do that all the time.
[ Though instead of going back for another kiss, he just stays snuggled close on the porch for a bit. ]
no subject
Is it weird to say that you look really pretty in the sunset?
no subject
No, it just makes me happy, really. You're pretty handsome yourself.
no subject
Thought you said I look like a thug.
[The words come out of his mouth before Keith can think to censor himself there. It wasn't James' wording exactly back when he'd informed Keith that the entire school basically had bets going on about his alleged street fighting and/or drug problem, but that'd been the gist of it.]
no subject
Well, you're not princely handsome, that's for sure. You're more of a rugged type. You've got a great body and determined eyes, it's a more wild kind of attractiveness. But you do really look great.
no subject
[his expression clears a little, though he isn't sure if that description makes him want to laugh or go look at himself in the mirror. In the end, he does neither and instead ducks his head a little as he lets the words sink in.]
You've always been such a rules guy. [Keith looks back up, a sly smile forming on his lips.] But you're into wild things deep down, huh.
no subject
[ James grins. He doesn't necessarily feel like liking wild things is entirely mutually exclusive with rules - especially not in this business. But that's not semantics he really wants to argue right now. ]
There's nothing wrong with just a bit of thrill.
no subject
[On a different occasion, he'd tease James over that. But not too long ago James was sitting with him in the infirmary looking stressed and worried. Not too long ago they were all losing a nasty fight with a powerful necromancer. The teasing dies in his mouth, the smile fading as he looks back towards the sunset.]
.... well it's your birthday so I guess you get whatever you want.
no subject
[ James rubs Keith's shoulder affectionately as he leans against him. 'Whatever he wants' may be a little humble right now, but he's enjoying it as much as he'd enjoy a luxury gift. It's nice. It's good to be together, close.
Cosmo, feeling a little left out, drapes himself over both their laps, and that's just as well. James feels he could stay this way forever, but only until the sun actually goes down. At that point, he's starting to get chilly, even with his boyfriend and their wolf. ]
Wanna move inside now?
no subject
Mhm. Let's do that.
[He scoops Cosmo up into his arms. The pup licks at his hands, and Keith carries him inside the cabin like he's holding a baby. The interior is a bit of a mess -- like something you'd see out of a post-apocalyptic world what with the creative use of cinderblocks and wood planks to serve as furniture, but it's clearly an organized sort of chaos.
Still carrying the doggo in his arms, he motions towards the futon and the kitchenette a little further indoors.]
Help yourself to anything.
[The plastic bags from earlier are still set out on the counter.]
1/2
Sounds good, yeah.
[ He gives Keith a smile, not betraying his mixed feelings about the decor, and heads to the kitchenette. His eyes are immediately drawn to the bags, because that's what Keith was carrying when they got here. Presumably this meant that any fresh and recent purchases would be in there.
James really thinks that's a reasonable assumption to make. No doubt about it ever crosses his mind. Until he opens a bag. ]
no subject
Finding himself face to face with a package of condoms is not one of these things.
He lets out an actual yelping sound of surprise, which he's immediately embarrassed off, because it ruins any chance to play this cool.
Welp. ]
no subject
Is everything okay?
[Keith sets the doggo down, then starts heading towards the kitchenette. He didn't think there were any scorpions or other critters around, but may very well just be wrong about that.]
no subject
I'm alright!
[ His voice is a pitch too high as he gives his reassurance. ]
Just... checked the wrong place for food.
no subject
Oh I....
[SHIT. Ducking his head immediately because his cheeks are burning violently, he quickly grabs the nearest bag.]
here. Just have this.
[What's even inside this one? He doesn't know. All he knows is that it's not The Problem bag.]
I'll just... take that one.
[Maybe if he tries to yank the bag away from James and it's out of sight, maybe it'll be like the last two seconds never happened.]
no subject
[ James grabs the bag he is handed, whatever it may possibly be, and nods obediently. His face is red up to the tips of his ears. ]
That one was... more of an after snack bag... I think.
no subject
Look. I-- just forget about it, ok? I'm putting this away. We don't have to talk about it.
[And before James can object, he starts walking very quickly towards one of the rooms furher into the cabin.]
