Despite… other disturbances, the flow of time is inexorable. And so too, is the beginning of classes. The bells of Daybreak Academy peal joyfully as students are roused from their beds far earlier than they would prefer to attend their new classes. The Professors, of course, are also back in it, their classrooms (presumably) neatly dusted and arranged for the fresh new faces of this year’s crop, eager and ready to learn. Presumably.

A. OPENING BANQUET

As is the custom of Daybreak, a grand sumptuous banquet has been prepared for the night following the first day of classes. With entire pigs spit-roasted over open flame, chicken and beef of all sorts, juices, wines and beers from all over Europe, and of course the best breads and chocolates as befits a French school, the banquet is truly one for the record books. Of course, they say that every year.

B. SYLLABUS HANDOUTS

Most teachers at this point are handing out the syllabi for their next class, although a few more aggressive ones may have already launched fully into teaching. If you have questions about this quarter’s curriculum, now’s the time to voice it.

C. MEET AND GREET

With the new school year comes new opportunities to forge lifelong friendships. And what better way to do that than by partaking in cheesy icebreakers courtesy of your RAs? While hardly mandatory, RAs are highly encouraged to turn out their entire floor by being as annoyingly peppy and persistent as possible. At a school like this, it’s important to make new friends!

D. SOMETHING BLEW UP AGAIN

Daybreak Academy is a bit of an unusual school by any conventional standards. Daemons, fairies and youkai studying alongside humans that can call upon arcane power and bring forth divine light are hardly your usual fare. And this, of course, means that it’s usually a matter of hours before something blows up somewhere on campus. For new students, this might be a startling, shocking experience. For seasoned students, well, it’s just that time again.

[ of course they say that every year, but it's ana's first welcome back banquet, and just like at prom, her plate is loaded with food. it looks like a lot for a tiny girl like herself to eat, but she's determined to eat this all.

for those who know ana, she looks a lot less chipper than usual. there's something in her expression that doesn't seem quite right. at least she's eating plentiful today.

if she sees someone eyeing her large plate of food, she'll blink at them and tilt her head to the side. ]

C. icebreaker
[ at lumiere, ana is up next for the icebreaker. she looks a little sheepish when she's called upon, shuffles around a little awkwardly. ]

Good evening, everyone. My name is Anastasia Rose, though you may simply call me Ana, and an interesting fact about myself --

[ well. apparently her parents are fucking dead, her boyfriend moved away, and she's been a bit of a recluse these past couple of weeks.

...not that she'll say any of those. she'll manage a pleasant smile, then: ]

I am quite an extraordinary dancer. [ she lets out a little laugh. ] No, I'm kidding. I lived in Tokyo, Japan for a little while when I was growing up.

[ James spends some of the early part of the banquet being impressive (ridiculous) in his student council uniform and chatting with people about his position, so by the time he actually gets to sit down with his own modest plate, he's exhausted. Happy to see a friendly face, he immediately moves over to where Ana's already eating. ]

I'd ask if you're feeling unwell, but your meal plan says otherwise. What's up?

[ she's happy to see him, too. after a long series of events, ana could use a friendly face around here. she moves over a little to make room for him and smiles tiredly. ]

Hello, James. Long time no see.

[ that's mostly her fault, though. ]

And still looking fantastic in your uniform, I see!

[ He drops himself down on the seat next to her and immediately gives her expression a skeptical once-over. ]

Thanks. But you kind of avoided my question here. How are you?

[ at that... ana lets out a dry little laugh. ]

Am I really so easy to read?

[ well, yeah, you are, ana. plus you two have known each other for long enough. it's only natural that james would know something's up. ]

Well...let's just say I got another one of Toki's visions.

I've known you for a bit now.

[ He definitely has to point that out verbally as well, thank you. Look at his Good Friend skills. ]

What did the vision say?

Fair enough.

[ she shrugs it off, then: ]

Their nameplates, presumably from their work stations, were lit ablaze. ... Allura and I got into a bit of a spat over it, but ultimately...

[ she frowns. ]

I'm not sure what to do about it.

Wait, back up a little. Whose names? And why is the princess angry about it?

[ Allura and Ana obviously know each other, given they both attended his birthday for starters, but he had no idea there was a shared connection going deep enough to cause fights... ]

Apologies. Those were my parents' names.

[ ... ]

Allura...cares about hers very much. That's all I can say.

Ah... It must be a sore topic, given her... circumstances.

[ Last survivor of your whole civilization is a really tough thing to just carry around, even if by looking at Allura, James doesn't think you'd ever be able to tell. ]

For you, though... I wonder why Toki even had that vision, even though they have no immediate relevance to you. Are you worried?

...That, I'm not sure of. Not right now.

[ she shakes her head. ]

I feel as though I should be, but part of me doesn't want to be worried at all. Does that make sense?

As much sense as it can make to me, I think. My family situation's a whole lot different, so I can't say I truly comprehend what it's like for you...

[ He's starting to think that his relationship to his parents is way further from ideal than he'd ever assumed, but it's still... nowhere close to what other people go through. ]

You don't owe them your concern, even if they're family. This seems like a special case.

...Thank you.

[ she smiles at him. hearing that sort of validation is...nice. ]

I needed to hear that. I'll think on it some more, but right now I'd prefer to keep my nose out of it and continue to pursue my education here.

*Maya had slipped into the icebreakers late, in that she ditched the dorms to decompress and just came home when she felt up for people. In time for Ana's introduction. She didn't care who saw her show up, anyone who knows her knows her issues.*

Shame. Having someone who dances while I play would help me with more fun composition.

*Maya's got this dry delivery as she finds a spot to sit down, leaning her cello case next to her.*

Tokyo's cool though...

Really? Well, I'm sure we could come up with something. I may not be good at it, but I'm not opposed to trying.

[ ...if you don't mind a bunch of flailing that is, maya. ]

Tokyo's lovely. How many times have you visited?

And I've never been, I went to high school with someone who plays hockey in Tokyo. Occasionally see his photos and stuff. I'm not really well traveled except for missions out of here.

[ ANA REALLY IS BAD AT DANCING THOUGH. ]

Well, once we defeat Nightfall, travelling is certainly something you should look into if you get the chance. It's quite an eye-opening experience overall.
