Need For Speed (Open)

What: At long last, Puella has made a Sprint Hat

A - Many different locations

[Though she would not quite explain why, Puella had been more frequently exploring the Secondhand Shop more often in her free time. And then when that failed, actually could be seen out in Soleil to check on those stores too. Just for something. Inspiration maybe? She was checking out a lot hats but honestly - that is something not too uncommon.]

[Alas, no matter what hat she found, there was always something just...missing, and she was never satisfied with any of them. Well, she would just have to come up with something of her own then! And eventually spent a fair amount of time in the first Aube Common Room with a notepad, doodling up sketches. Whatever hat she tried to make, it'll have to be something that could stay on well so nothing too big or fancy. Which was easier said than done if she wanted it to look cool. The creative process is hard.]

[All the while she kept a full, mist filled hourglass on the table next to her. When the sun starts to set it was obvious to see it had quite a glow to it. ...Not that Puella was actually using it as a light source but it was still really rad to look at.]


B - Mythril Cage

[Puella walked into the arena that already had a training course all set up, likely by an assistant who thought this was a little too much for a child. And yet, even now, Puella still seemed pretty confident.]

Okay, I'm ready! [She set a few things down and then...swapped her iconic top hat with a brand new winged visor. Felt pretty comfy to wear, but will it actually do?]

[She crouched down as though ready to sprint, and then took off, like, way faster than anyone her size actually should. Not nearly as fast when she literally stops time itself, but it possibly the next best thing. And she didn't have to do much of anything to use it.]

[As for the course, whoever had doubts she couldn't do it should be relieved now, because she was nailing it. The hoops, the walls, wheels and platforms did not really stand much of a chance; though Puella was noticing it was a little bit harder to control with this much speed. It was perhaps, a good thing all this equipment was all pretty much padded.]

[Especially once she tried to go just a little faster...]

[Apparently, trying to activate magic while running at crazy speeds is a bad idea. She only got a few little flames, not even stars, when she slipped up and fell. It was almost a skid into a wall. But she was fine. Probably. That might have been enough for now.]

I need to...work on that. [Rubs back. Maybe make a few adjustments to the rune while at it.]


C - Avery's Office (Closed?)

[There was just one final test.]

[Really, she should saved this for another game of tag with Grimm. But he was also way too fast and it was unfair. She needed a different target to try the hat out on. Someone who might also be difficult to mess with, but not impossible. And unsuspecting too.]

[That's when Puella walked past the offices.] ...

[First peeking inside to see if anyone was home. And once the professor was spotted, she dashed right in. Not to the front, but right behind the desk so that she could see alllll the papers he was working on. And whatever else was hiding behind there. It was all pretty interesting to figure out. So uh, enjoy a kid right up in your personal space.]

[ Vivi is still experimenting with his bat, so he's booked some time in the Cage. It's not a surprise to see Puella there - she lives right next door, after all!

But he is surprised when she almost slams into a wall, and he rushes over. ]

Are you okay?? [ THAT LOOKS LIKE IT HURT?? ]

[IT KIND OF HURT? THOUGH IN A WAY SHE HAD IT COMING FOR GOING TOO FAR.]

I'm okay... [Although after taking a fall like that. Maybe it's not herself she should be worried about.] --Is the hat still fine?

[Puella had to take it off to make sure she didn't ruined it. Destroyed on the very first day...]

[It seems to still be in good shape. That's a relief.]

[He looks up, highly unamused. He swears the kid's faster than normal, but maybe that's just because he wasn't paying much attention before now.]

Can I help you?

[The child is definitely not faster, you just weren't noticing. ....Maybe.]

[And looks up.] ...Not really.

I wanted to see too!

Well, if you're taking an interest in law, I might be able to help you out. Might not be as... fantastic as a daemonic contract, but it's still plenty interesting!

[Maybe! It was basically the equivalent of magic in the mundane world.]

...Is it really hard?

Absolutely.

[He's not about to lie about THAT.]

But it's rewarding. Like a big, grand game of chess where a win leaves your opponent on their knees, begging for mercy.

Or, you know, a bunch of fines and damages to pay.

[Having it worded like that...it is sort of easy to see how ruining one man's whole career might be a little satisfying.]

Have you done it a lot? [Puella doesn't know everything about chess - but she does know it's one very long, very tedious game. Something like that has to be very rewarding in order to have the patience for!]

Kid, I've been alive for centuries. Of course I've done it a lot!

[Not as much as he would like to, though. One of the many, many downsides of getting locked in a dungeon not long after graduating from law school.]

I wanna know how to do it!

[If he knows everything there is then...why not? Until she gets bored of it for something else shiny.]

[Teach her how to utterly screw someone over with non-magic.]

[The thrice-a-week routine that Desi had previously committed herself to for her own practice sessions—an ongoing thing to make sure that she's still able to keep her magic and her other powers under control—meant that she was still a pretty frequent visitor to the Cage.

Normally, she was there on mornings, and it was usually at or near a specific time, so others who regularly went there mostly knew when she would be there, and she often used just one specific area for what she was doing to keep herself out of everyone else's way. However, with her routine having been thrown off temporarily by the mission she had participated in at the beginning of the month, a few of her more-recent visits to the Cage have simply been whenever she could find the time to do so.

When she got there, the first thing she noticed was the massive obstacle course, and the second thing she noticed was the kid taking a spill. She hurried over to check on them.]

Ah, are you alright? That looked like quite the fall.

[Puella had already gotten herself sitting up by the time Desi came along. Just having a few things to brush off, and seethe through whatever bruises she might've gotten.]

I think so...I think I over did it... [Tried too much in a short period of time.]

[She's got a pretty good idea of what all is going on here, but she'll ask anyway just to be 100% sure.]

What were you doing, anyway?

[She waited a little while longer for the pain to subside before speaking up.] I was testing out my new hat!

[It's pretty cool, huh?]

[Desi looks over the visor, initially just looking at it in general, but then she sees the rune on it. She's been working off and on at familiarizing herself with various kinds of runes, not necessarily to actually make use of any, but so she can better understand whatever Gunvolt is trying to accomplish when he uses them himself.

She thinks she can recognize this one.]

This is...a speed rune?

--You can read it? [Puella's runes weren't the same as ordinary ones. Being practically a written language by itself made it closer to program coding than fancy circles. But it sure did glow like a rune sometimes would. And given the pumped up speed from earlier, there had to be no other explanation.]

You're right though. I wanted something so that I can keep up with everybody.

[...Or you know, not get chased by beings way faster than her. In case her magic fails.]

[She's mostly going off of what few similarities there are between this and ordinary ones, and yes, also what she'd seen in the moments just before Puella fell.]

Not really, that was mostly a guess. Some parts of it look a little bit like some of the ones I've seen so I thought it might be something similar.

Oh... [A little quietly, thinking.] Do you also use runes then?

[There was all sorts of kinds out there, that Desi could be more familiar with.]

Ah, no, I don't. My roommate does, though, so I've been trying to learn more about them in general.

[Her reasoning is mostly that having a better understanding of them might make it easier to work with Gunvolt when they team up. Not that they don't already work well together.]
