What You Take With You part II: Reflections In The Fog

Who: All those on the What You Take With You mission and everyone else (who OOCly wishes to join in)
What: An important artifact is brought back only to immedaitely activate. Further details are here.
When: November 10th
Where: Daybreak Campus and around Soliel
Warning: Warn in headers as appropriate

On November 10th the recovery team sent into the Outlands makes their return with the obsidian mirror. Thus far it hasn't seemed any different than any other obsidian mirror, nothing spectacular about it beyond its age and where it came from. But Daybreak was only called to retrieve it, not anything more. The spell is worked to open the path between the Outlands and Daybreak, allowing them back. But as this happens, the mists rise up as they often do when the two worlds intersect. The team might even see it ghosting over the mirror before catching their own reflections in it. A light flashes over its surface and in that instant, the mirror activates.

Just one look in any reflective surface throughout Soliel-- a mirror, a window, a bit still water-- and people will be struck with sudden dizziness, a feeling of being knocked back, and then darkness. You'll find, on waking, a dark and desolate landscape full of smoke and fog. It'll be hard to tell where one is going. You won't be alone. People all over the academy have been brought into this vision. You may run into them, but even more likely, you'll run into the spots of color that cut through the fog.

And dwelling with this color? Why it's you. But better. Or maybe, much, much worse. It seems the mirror has something to show you. But is that something a promise? Or a threat...? Learn its lesson and you may escape both the shadowy realm and a terrible fate in your future. What image will you leave on the world?

[The implication that it wasn't the real Professor Kiske isn't lost on her, but she lets that go for the moment.]

Like always. [Giving GV one heck of a smile, Desi turns and gets ready to lead the way, rather than follow like she normally would have done before.] I haven't tried looking over this way very much yet, have you?

Sure haven't. Let's go.

[That smile... that was more open and broad than he'd usually see. ...She wore it well, he had to say. And with her moving in front to take the lead, he found himself following along quite easily. Wandering through the mists without any real indication of where they were going felt a lot more... bearable.]

By the way... uh. I'm not used to seeing you with your hair down when you're out and about. It... looks good that way.

[No indication of if they actually were getting anywhere made it hard to say if they were actually on the right track. Despite being basically pretty lost, though, she's awfully content with the current situation, with having the company as she looks around.]

Ah, grazie~ [There's a brief pauses as she considers something.] But I'm not the one you should be saying that to, am I?

[Gunvolt all but halted in his tracks, but just for a brief moment. What Desi said took a second to land, but once it did, GV blinked. Took a moment to process that, but it didn't stop his stride much.]

...Guess not.

So... you're a vision of Desi for sure, then. I thought so... but after what I've seen so far? Trying to deal with that more carefully. Could still use some work, I guess.

[That doesn't stop him at all from keeping along with her, though.]

Oh, no, you're fine. It took me a little time to figure out what was happening, myself, and I was trying not to bring it up at first since I didn't know what sort of reaction I should expect, so that's more on me than it is on you. But then you made it fairly clear that you already knew what was going on, so I knew it would be alright.

From what I've come to understand about all of it, though... I think I'm who she wants to be. [And she thinks he's already figured that part out.]

[It didn't take much for him to put that together. This Desidera actually wasn't so different from her real self... but rather, one who seemed very confident in who she was, regardless of appearances. The horns on full display and allowed to be that sharp, no hesitation in... basically anything, so far. Yeah. That made sense.]

...Definitely for the best we were both careful about it, though.

Still feels weird meeting someone's idealized form. I hope this isn't like invading hers, or your, privacy.

[He actually feels a little embarrassed thinking about that. It obviously just sort of happened, but... at the same time he couldn't help but wonder if this was something she'd rather keep private.

...Even if, really, it was actually a pretty logical extension of what he knew about her. It's not like it was really that far out of an assumption. But making the guess and meeting a manifestation of it might be apples and oranges ethically.

He hoped that wasn't a headache coming on.]

I don't think you'll need to worry about that too much.

As far as I've seen, those of us that exist here are because we somehow found our way to this place, and since I exist, that means the real Desidera is here too. [As well as one more vision that, thankfully, GV hasn't crossed paths with. And, probably, there are some visions of him to be found here as well.] She'll likely have come to the same conclusion about all of this that I did by now, so she's probably aware that people could meet me. Were it anyone else, she would probably take issue with it if she found out, but it's you, so it should be fine.

Still, stop me if I end up getting too nosy.

[Not that he probably would, but he'd rather hedge his bets to respect her. Perhaps somewhat unfortunately, though, most of the implication of if it's him might have gone over his head.]

...Your eyes are brighter than hers. Actually brighter, not like... ah, you know.

Sorry, GV, but you'll have to stop yourself if you think you're digging too deep. [The real one trusts him pretty explicitly, why would her ideal self be any different?]

Ah, they are, are they? I wonder why. [Judging by her tone, she certainly does know why.]

Right...

[...Why did he suddenly have a sinking feeling that he might just dig in the wrong places and not realize it until he either stepped on a land mine? Or summoned some sort of fiery, winged beast from a long forgotten pit? She definitely had to make this complicated...

Still, he knows her well enough to know that tone, and looks her over one more time.]

...I might have an idea. Probably has to do why you let the horns grow out too. The only thing I don't know about is why the marking on your arm is gone.

Oh, that? That was a non-magical rune, a little something used as an identifying mark of sorts by our family. [Even the original would have admitted that if she was asked.

With that knowledge, though, the fact that it's not present on this one probably raises even more questions.]

They weren't terribly thrilled with having a daemon in the family. [Oh. Well. Questions answered?]
shockingblue: (Irritated)

[personal profile] shockingblue 2019-11-16 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
[Sure did answer his question, and as one might expect, Gunvolt looked immediately shocked, and profoundly irritated at the notion. With a tightly balled fist at his side and through nearly gritted teeth, he almost hissed:]

...So they disowned you because you are what you are. What kind of family does that?!

[Having never known a blood-related family of his own, hearing that fills him with a real sense of anger. How could they do that to her? Their own flesh-and-blood relative? Family was supposed to be there for each other, no matter what, right?

...Unbelievable.

After a moment, the steamy anger cooled, turning colder, more matter of fact, but still plain.]

...Their loss. They don't deserve you if they treat you like that.

[Ah. There's a small misunderstanding here, because she hadn't yet gotten into any specifics.] The decision to leave was mine, or it will be hers; with Mother as the exception, it was clear that they didn't want me, so I didn't want them. You're still right to be angry, either way.

[GV knew that Desi's mother had kept her sheltered, which...wasn't great, but she at least didn't abandon Desi herself, and she was the one who saw to bringing the girl to the academy to get the help that was needed, when she realized how unprepared she was.]

[Gunvolt took a moment to cool off further before he said anything else. His temper had been quick to flare; seemingly moreso lately than it had been in the past. He took a deep breath in, and centered himself before he continued. He was still upset and unhappy to hear that her family got like that, but he at least sounded more level-headed now.]

...It's still a load of horsejitt. They never should have put you in a position that you had to make that decision.

But for what it's worth... sounds like you made the right one. And I'm glad your mother at least didn't turn her back on you.
