What You Take With You part II: Reflections In The Fog
Who: All those on the What You Take With You mission and everyone else (who OOCly wishes to join in)
What: An important artifact is brought back only to immedaitely activate. Further details are here.
When: November 10th
Where: Daybreak Campus and around Soliel
Warning: Warn in headers as appropriate
On November 10th the recovery team sent into the Outlands makes their return with the obsidian mirror. Thus far it hasn't seemed any different than any other obsidian mirror, nothing spectacular about it beyond its age and where it came from. But Daybreak was only called to retrieve it, not anything more. The spell is worked to open the path between the Outlands and Daybreak, allowing them back. But as this happens, the mists rise up as they often do when the two worlds intersect. The team might even see it ghosting over the mirror before catching their own reflections in it. A light flashes over its surface and in that instant, the mirror activates.
Just one look in any reflective surface throughout Soliel-- a mirror, a window, a bit still water-- and people will be struck with sudden dizziness, a feeling of being knocked back, and then darkness. You'll find, on waking, a dark and desolate landscape full of smoke and fog. It'll be hard to tell where one is going. You won't be alone. People all over the academy have been brought into this vision. You may run into them, but even more likely, you'll run into the spots of color that cut through the fog.
And dwelling with this color? Why it's you. But better. Or maybe, much, much worse. It seems the mirror has something to show you. But is that something a promise? Or a threat...? Learn its lesson and you may escape both the shadowy realm and a terrible fate in your future. What image will you leave on the world?

The shout comes not from him or the boy, but from a familiar voice. She doesn't know what exactly is going on, but she heard the shrieking and came running. Imagine her dismay, when she finds the hollow boy beating the shit out the boy she'd met only a little while ago.
"What are you doing?" she demands, the concern thick in her tone. In a moment, she's put herself between them, facing the hollow boy and putting her hands up--either to pacify or perhaps with a thought to restrain him somehow. "Stop! Okay? Just stop. Leave him alone."
no subject
His lips pull back from his teeth in a sneer.
"Move, Quincy. This isn't your business."
Ichigo stirs, pushing himself up on his elbows. He coughs and shakes his head.
"It doesn't make a difference. I can't stop it. Just--"
"SHUT UP! God, you're pathetic!"
no subject
His demand for her to move is met with a set jaw and a determined look in her eyes. "I'm making it my business," she tells him, holding his gaze with hers as long as she can... At least until she hears the boy stir behind her. She turns to look on instinct, trying to check how badly he might be hurt--when the hollow boy starts shouting at him again.
"Hey! Hey. Hey." Her hands are still out, and very carefully she takes a few steps closer to him. She tries to rest her hands on his arms, just above his elbows. "Just calm down. Talk to me, okay? What happened? Why are you acting like this?"
no subject
The latter is definitely winning out when she grabs him, surprising him, but it doesn't mean he wants to escape any less. He can't answer her. It's too much to explain. He's going to snap that he's not actually like anything, when he's cut off.
"It thinks it can fix me," Ichigo says in a low voice, shooting a tired glare at him. "But it can't."
He bristles snarls back, over Mom's shoulder, "You're right. I really ought to just grind your bones to dust and get it over with. Long live the king. Look at you! You're worthless! You chose this!"
He growls and turns his attention back to her. But only barely.
"Just leave this alone, Quincy. This is between us."
no subject
She clutches onto his arms a little tighter, trying to keep him from moving past her. "I'm not leaving it alone. Don't make me repeat myself again. I know you can be better than this."
She half turns, addressing the orange haired boy. "And you... Ichigo, right? Stop provoking him. Just sit right there. I can come heal you in a moment."
Her attention comes fully back to the hollow boy, and she looks up at him. "Do me a favor, okay? Just take a deep breath and let it out slowly. Please?"
no subject
"I'm not doing slow calming breaths," He snaps. "And you don't know me at all."
He jerks an arm but doesn't entirely pull from her grip. His mask is starting to form, slowly, involuntarily, over the side of his face but he doesn't notice anymore than the hole opening in his chest.
"Let me ask you something, Quincy. Lets say you got a leg caught in a bear trap. Is it anyone else's business whether you decide to chop off that leg? Do you owe to someone to bleed out?"
no subject
"No, but if my leg was in a trap and someone was trying to help me, I wouldn't push them away. It might be harder, but if there was a chance to save my leg, I'd rather take that than give up."
no subject
It doesn't come. She just holds her hand there. It's not comfortable, but he doesn't move. Not with her hand on his face like that. (The mask feels like bone. A clean and smooth surface.)
He wishes she'd let go. He needs his mask more than ever. She's going to see it, the way it flashes across his face, the way her words twist.
"You can't," He says. His head shakes minutely. "You don't really want to help me. You just think you do right now."
no subject
"How can you know that?" There's a skepticism in her voice, briefly tinging the edges of her concern. "I've been trying to help you since the night of the Hunt. There's no one forcing me to do that or making me think that I should. It's only because I want to, and I don't know a reason that would change."
no subject
"Because it's obvious! The very first thing you did was protect Ichigo just now. That's what it comes down to, always, with me, with you, with everyone. When it's me or him, that's always the obvious answer. You don't know him but I'm not stupid enough to believe that would make a difference. Everything's for him, even if it kills us!"
She's not going to understand. He doesn't expect her to.
"I keep saying you don't know me and you keep ignoring me. I mean it. You are in over your head, Quincy."
no subject
"... I didn't stop you because of him." That's a good place to start, right? That seems to be the crux of the matter for him. "He could have been anyone. I stopped you because I don't want you to hurt others. I may not know you well, but I at least know you're better than that. Your self control is important to you. You don't lash out without a reason."
It crosses her mind that this is hard. She has to be so careful about what she says. Not because it's not the truth, but because she gets the notion that if she tries to rely on just feelings, she won't get through to him. She has to break it down further for him--to simple facts that he can't deny.
"So, can you please talk to me? I'm doing this for you. I'm standing here with you. Talking to you. Trying to understand you. So give me a chance to do that, and I promise that I'll give it my best."
no subject
He doesn't want her to understand. He doesn't need the pity. He doesn't want to see her face when she realizes. He doesn't want her to run.
"... You're not going to like what you find. The deeper you go the less you'll like it. I'm warning you now." And maybe with that warning she'll wise up. He looks past her. The fake Ichigo stares back with dull eyes.
"I do have a reason for this. He's the reason." He sneers, "It's a servant's job to look after the master, isn't it? This is the only way he learns."
