EVENT - TO CRAFT THE NIGHT

TO CRAFT THE NIGHT
Log Comm | Network Comm | OOC Comm | Navigation
The Facility is mired to humanity only in the ways in which it seemed necessary, but beyond that it was wholly alien. An edifice of writhing black masses forming a cruel simulacra of a building, with the texture of the walls rough and leathery, pulsing as if blood flowed through them but ice-cold to the touch. When viewed from above, the facility is a black pentagon with an intricate pentagram drawn in red fluid that seems to be flowing through it as if blood through veins. Those stalking the halls will find the place awash with a dread psychic energy. Entering the compound will immediately give a sense of nakedness, as if your every secret has been torn from you and laid bare to ageless minds. They know you. They know everything about you. They find you disgusting, and the secrets you hold in your heart to be weak. And they will use every single one to make you suffer.
The beings that dwell here are not mortal. They are barely comparable to living beings as you might know. Beings of writhing tentacles, inscrutable aims, and an overwhelming hatred for mankind and the sun that fuels them, these creatures hail from the Deep Lands, an alien realm spoken of only in the darkest, cruelest of Outland legends. To most mortals, Outland creatures are what nightmares are made of. The beings that dwell within this dread edifice are that which give nightmares to the nightmares.
The facility seems to hum with intense psychic power at all times. This immense collection of power appears to have but one purpose. The creatures that dwell within are channeling their thoughts into a specific purpose, an overriding goal and duty to bring about the end of the sun and the glorious Nightfall. A combination of an abject hatred of humans and sunlight is honed into a dread song that gives glory to the end and to darkness eternal. Its lyrics are beyond human ken and to hear it is to risk madness, the words ripping and tearing at sanity and reason and substituting it with something utterly inhuman.
With the horrific powers at play, even a seasoned force would be fully outmatched. Fortunately, Daybreak is well-prepared for most any eventuality. As with Xelvak before, the Radiance of a Flame can cast aside and defend against the horrific powers these alien beings bring to bear. Radiance can heal the effects of the mucus, as well as help shield the minds of those within it, keeping them safe from the incapacitation the Flayers are so fond of employing. This, aided by magic rings of mind protection, should allow the Daybreak team to fight back, although it will do little to blunt the other considerable psychic capabilities of their foes.
While the mission is to capture the facility, Daybreak acknowledges that may not be possible. If things look bad, the strike teams are ordered to destroy whatever they can and escape in the confusion. While this mission is critical, even more important is that everyone survive.

A. BREACH THE GATES
Initial scouting endeavors have proven next to useless. The immense psychic power within the compound ensures that any intelligent being that enters into the facility’s airspace will be immediately detected and disposed of. Several advance teams have not returned, and are presumed dead - or worse. As the strike force approaches, the facility will be completely locked down, with a psychic barrier of palpable blue energy formed around it. With no visible entrances, the initial assault will require Daybreak forces to punch holes into the facility so that they may gain entrance.
B. STALK THE HALLS
Within the compound, Daybreak will come face-to-face with some of the most inscrutable and dread creatures who dwell within the Deep Lands. Known as Flayers, these beings stand as humans do, but in the place of a human head is a squid-like face with lashing tentacles where their mouth should be. Possessed of incredibly psychic ability, a Flayer can read your innermost thoughts as you might read a book. Any intrusions to the compound will be met with swift retribution, the Flayers unleashing blasts of psychic energy that overrides their victim’s ability to control their body. Thus incapacitated, the Flayers will then proceed to grip the victim’s face with their tentacles and insert them into the victim’s nose and mouth, where they will proceed to consume the brain that lies within as one might a choice morsel from a five star restaurant.
With the protections in place, the Flayers will quickly respond with other tactics. Powerfully telekinetic, they can attack with powerful psychic force, hurling objects at immense speed and even snapping limbs with a precise blast of psychic energy. They will also summon thralls, Daybreak forces from the advance party who have been captured and enslaved. So long as the Flayers hold the compound, the Thralls will obey their collective will without question, fighting without concern to their lives with the sole purpose of slaying any who stand against their masters.
In the cases of both the Flayers and the Thralls, they will shy away from a Candle’s Radiance. The Thralls in particular will slow and stay their movements within a Candle’s light, although the Flayers will quickly sweep them away before they can remain within the light for long.
C. SEVER THE VEINS
The Flayers are not the only danger held within the compound. Traveling through the blood-red fluid that ruins through the structure are twisted eel-like creatures with lamprey-like mouths and several fins splitting from their core bodies. These creatures, like the Flayers who roam the halls are possessed of immense psychic power, and will stalk any trespassers through their fluid-filled tubes. While they will not make any offensive moves from within their tubes, they do possess the ability to conquer a victim’s mind, taking control of them for a brief period of time which they will use to disrupt a team, making them easy prey for the Flayers. Should their tubes be breached, they will attack with lashing tentacles, flinging a horrific gray mucus that can inflict a horrific disease upon its victim, stealing away their ability to breath air and making the act of existing on dry land as corrosive as if they had been submerged in a vat of acid. Only by being submerged will they be able to breath and survive.
Once exposed, the creatures will work to return to the tubes, even if they are spilling fluid. If removed from the fluid entirely, they will begin to dry up rapidly. Exposure to Radiance will hasten the effect, burning away their mucus and causing their skin to dry and shrivel at a rapid pace.
D. GRACE OF SALVATION
With the palpable danger this operation presents, Daybreak has wisely held some of its finest in reserve. Support teams, many comprised of multiple Faculty members and Graduate Students, will be released as part of the second wave to provide healing and extraction. These teams will sweep the halls after the first wave, providing aid and extricating their allies from danger.
[OOC Note: For this prompt, if your team isn’t specifically a second-wave support team you may include a prompt where your team gets into trouble and needs to be saved]
E. LARVAL HARBINGER
With the facility in disarray, Daybreak will push grimly forward to the center of the compound. Here, they will find the Herald... or at least the being that will one day become the Herald. Here is the focal of the tubes of red fluid which are continuously pumping liquid into the tank, although if Daybreak forces have severed some connections the fluid will be significantly diminished. Beyond that, the song of psychic purpose is concentrated on this chamber - although that too will be diminished if Daybreak has managed to defeat some of the Flayers. Either way, as the forces enter, the creature’s eye will open and, as it stares forward at Daybreak’s finest, a question will touch the minds of everyone within the compound:
"Are you my creator?"
[OOC Note: Based on the vote conducted on the plotting post, the creature found here will be spared. The IC results of this will be posted shortly after this event.]

[ Ekkehardt keeps his initial explanations brief. He warns that this experience will likely be harrowing, and as a field team, they can't afford to spend too much time on each patient beyond stabilizing them and getting them out of danger.
Once the compound is breached and the calls start pouring in, the reasons for his initial warnings become clear as he leads those who have volunteered to go with him onto the battlefield proper. Professionals though Daybreak's forces are, the compound is still exceptionally well defended, and the monsters within it are fond of turning comrades against each other through application of psychic power - leading to some terrible injuries.
Ekkehardt stays close, giving directions as necessary but mostly giving his volunteers space to work. ]
Steady. [ His voice is as calm as ever, like it's just another day. ] Remember to slow down if you're feeling tired or shaky. Do you need any help?
ii.
[ At other points, Ekkehardt can be found inside the compound, usually carrying...bodies? Whether they're unconscious or dead is unclear, but he sure seems to be busy.
Still, he's not entirely closed off. If someone catches his attention, he'll come over, burden in tow. ]
Hello. Did you need anything?
[ He sounds mildly ruffled, but nothing more than that. ]
iii.
[ Maybe you've had a particularly bloody brush with some of the nastier inhabitants guarding this place. Maybe it wasn't a thrall or a flayer that got you, but an unfortunate fall or encounter with some wayward machinery. Or maybe you're just in need of help.
Ekkehardt isn't the only medic working on the battlefield, but right now, he's closest, and if you're wounded he'll drop whatever he's doing to attend to you first. ]
Can you still move? [ His voice is quiet, serious. ] We need to get you to somewhere safer for treatment.
iv. Wildcard!
[ For everything else! Hit me up with anything. ]

At some moments between any bandaging or other treatment that she needs to do, she takes what opportunities she can to keep one or both hands right there on whoever she's focused on at the moment, using her power briefly to help give them a little push toward recovery. Every now and then, she needs a moment's rest because of it, as its use physically exhausts her if she does too much all at once, but as long as she's not actually pushing herself, the moments where she isn't using that power are enough to keep it from being too tiring. In a way, it helps her keep to a pretty regular pace, one where she's not rushing herself.
She'd also made no secret of what she was doing; on their way here she'd expressed that she would be using her power where she could, assuring him that she wouldn't overdo it—he was aware that overuse was tiring for her, and would want her to avoid that.
Removing her hands from a patient that she just finished with, she turns only partly toward Ekkehardt for him to know that she's heard and is acknowledging him, but not yet removing her gaze from the person she's there with, just in case.]
I'll need a minute to recharge but otherwise I think I'm fine for now.

You're not feeling overwhelmed in any other way? [ His concern is more about her mental state; her ability to use magic is secondary. ]

But once the calls came in for the medical team, he quickly understood why they needed him held back. The inside of the facility was a nightmare, and there was a lot of horrible things going on, and to evacuate out those who had been injured or incapacitated, they needed someone strong to protect those who would risk their lives for others.
In retrospect, he felt bad for initially being upset at the decision. Now, though, he took to the task with incredible seriousness, never straying too far from the team and focusing more on pushing away enemies who would interfere rather than actively hunt them down.
...if she were here, this is precisely what he would be doing, after all.
...Maybe that's why they put him here.
He could not fail. Would not fail. Not again. No one under his charge would get killed if he could help it. So he put his everything into it... and he showed no mercy if it was expedient, but knew when to back off to not get target fixation.
He looked to Ekkehardt when he asked the question, even though he had been going full tilt since the moment they got called in.]
Not for now, no. ...I will need to rest once we finish here, though. But until then, not one of these abominations will stop me from keeping this team safe.

And he can't deny that there's a comfort in having a more-familiar-than-usual face around; it's a luxury that, working alone or with strange groups he's unlikely to see again, he hadn't had before coming to the Academy. And fondness aside (and Ekkehardt is certainly fond of the daemon), Valvatorez is inherently reliable. It's more psychologically reassuring than he'd expected to have someone else he knows he doesn't have to worry about there. ]
Well, you know your limits. [ Valvatorez has centuries more experience on himself, after all. ] Just remember to breathe now and then.
I don't know much about any extra mental protections you might have against our enemies, apart from what's already been provided. It's not too rough for you, I hope?
[ His voice is distant and cool; he's in the half-blind state that gives him most control over his magic as he works on stabilizing several patients at once. Someone could probably try to put something through his skull and he wouldn't even realise; it's something he uses sparingly, and only when he feels he's safe to do so. ]

Usually, he's not sent for this particular kind of work. All the same, he doesn't let it stop him from trying.
It only startles him mildly to hear Ekkehardt's voice. He stops what he's doing, looking himself over. He learned a healing spell from Hieke some time back. He also learned that the only way he knows how to heal is by giving his energy over. His hands shake for it. He looks up to Ekkehardt, back to the wound, and nods.]
Yeah. He's bleeding too much. I can't keep up with it alone.

[Jail has gone out of her way to help craft the mind protection rings personally. She's currently wearing a full set of her own, the design tweaked a little to be notably heavier and more durable, almost like a set of brass knuckles.]
[...actually, that's pretty much exactly how she's planning on using them. Every defense can be an offense, if you're willing to punch something real hard.]
[She holds up a few other, more normally-shaped rings.]
Anyone doesn't have one of these already, lemme know now. I want everyone wearing at least one of 'em at all times, even Candles. Radiance outta be enough to nip this shit in the bud by itself, but we're not here to take stupid chances, understand?
[They're far out enough from the facility to be safe- between being a Seer and being an engineer, she has calculating the minimum safe distance down to a science- but it's still vaguely disturbing just to be near.]
We're gonna go for a smash and grab, here. Once that- [She gestures at the barrier.] -goes down, they're gonna know something's up, but we don't gotta make it too obvious where we are. Don't worry too much about causing a ruckus, but try to be quick, keep moving, stay ahead of whatever shit they try to bring down on you.
Stay together, and stay smart.
II. when all you have is a hammer [open to all]
Back off!
[The hammer comes down with a Seer's sense of timing, smacking away a tentacle lashing out from a torn vein. She moves with the momentum, stepping further back out of reach.]
Stay back, you don't wanna get up close to these ones.
III. congratulations, it's an apocalypse [open to all]
[Of course, the magitech expert came to examine the lab. She's been figuring out more and more of how the facility works, exactly what they're doing here, and now she stands before the culmination of it all.]
[Here in the very heart of the facility, face-to-face with the newborn power raised up to destroy them all someday, she says the only words that feel truly right:]
Well, shit.
Closed
[But she could...maybe wear the rest of them around it. It just seemed like it might be a bit uncomfortable. She's not that used to having so many. Then again she still wasn't that used to yet having one.]
[And for the instructions given--] Um..if we're careful enough, I can maybe slow down whoever's inside..!

[The Illithids really didn't take kindly to the presence of a Sun Goddess in their lair, so they're throwing everything they have at her. She's being careful to avoid seriously hurting the thralls, but is otherwise showing no mercy to her opponents. Still, the numbers are against her.]
E

[He adjusts the ring on his finger before sliding on his gauntlet, dressed up for battle]
Everyone got their orders? We'll stick close until I say otherwise. This is a place where separation may be fatal. Once the barrier's down they'll already know we're here, so there is no need for subtlety - we need to be fast and hit hard - run them down before they can properly form a counter-offensive.
Now, it's time to breach. Rings on, weapons out!
B. OTA
[Ky was glad he brought his shield along - wincing as the blast hits it, the impact spreads over it, but it still spread up his arm, jolting it - suspecting if he were someone else, he'd be laid flat by the force. He steps back, crossing swords with an enthralled victim, clearly moving defensively, lightning crackling up the blade as he jerks, bashing the shield against his opponent to stun them]
I'll hold off the bewitched! Killing their controllers might save them so focus on that!
C. Fried Calamari anyone? OTA
Ugh-! Damn... we have to deal with those things before we can go any further!
[After some assaults on the mind, one's attention has to be drawn to the tubes. Ky was quick, his sword enveloped in blue-light light as he swung, breaching it, intending for the fluids to act as a conductor for his electricity in an attempt to fry the creatures before they could respond]
A
Just another few seconds....
[He reached shoulder deep into the machine, electricity arcing less than a foot from his head and plugged something in.]
There we go. Everyone get ready, the barrier will only be breached for a few seconds! Also, maybe cover your eyes.
[Gil pressed a big red button on a remote control and there was an eye searing actinic flash of light as the device did...something to the barrier, ripping a ragged hole in it.]
GO!

Kohaku led the way. Ostensibly, Nana should be the leader, but Nana couldn't hear people walking around through walls and tell you how tall they were. Her hearing was cranked way up, letting her hear the Flayers as they approached. The Flayers knew where she was just as easily, with their psychic powers, but the human defenders still had to rely on human senses so she kept quiet none the less, pointing out the way forwards through the alien, labyrinthine corridors as she tried to maneuver them around the more alien defenders to get the drop on the thralls.
She held her finger up to her lips as she leaned against the wall right next to a doorway and held up four fingers. Four guys approaching. They sounded armed.
Because she wasn't actually a secret agent she had to resort to actually whispering.
"Four of them. Sounds like they have guns. Maybe ten seconds? Get ready."
-2: semi open? It's still the three of them but like someone else can show up-
It had honestly been going pretty smoothly, but then Kohaku had gone crazy. The following fight had been terrifying and dark and confusing, ending in the giant...creature in the vein in the wall getting cut out and stabbed a whole bunch. It was a miracle no one had gotten slimed by the damn thing.
Now Kohaku was sitting down, recovering from the shock of getting mind controlled for a few seconds, and muttering "I hate this place." over and over again under her breath.
-3: THE HERALD-
Kohaku cautiously put her hand on the tank. This little thing was what all this trouble was over? It didn't look like it could even walk, much less cause the end of the world. "Are we sure this is-" And then the voice boomed through hers and everyone's head.
"Holy shit yup that's some real shit. Uh..." God what do you even do with something like this? She figured lying was about as likely to get her obliterated by evil magic as the truth was, so she said "No", not sure if sound could even penetrate into that tank.
1
"Kill or trap? I can do either."
She's found that this is, for some reason, an important distinction to make in cases like these. The struggle of life and death isn't new to her, but the fact that people would want to preserve the lives of those trying to kill them is still a very novel concept to her.

1-🌞 Generic Entry Prompt 🌞
[ Rex, for reasons a therapist could probably unravel, is still convinced he's not much of a fighter and has thus resolved to be more of a support role. That said, the fact he's carrying around a chunk of the sun means he's a good choice to cut the team an entrance.
Being a ham, he does this by sauntering closer to the barrier and holding out a hand at arm's length. The black box fades into view as it ejects a six-foot slab of a sword, a golden and elaborately decorated thing that smacks into his palm at the exact time his helmet closes. He does his scans and calculates as he walks, so he doesn't break stride as he takes a rare two-handed grip and swings overhead, cleaving a wide, ragged hole in the shimmering blue. Letting go of his sword lets it fly back into the box, and the whole thing vanishes again. ]
I'll take the middle of the formation- I'm better for support.
[ His voice has a mild mechanical distortion from the helmet, but it's not deliberately meant to be spooky for once- it was just better than hearing his voice so muffled. Rex does feel the psychic sensation of being a weak loser far too exposed to sinister eyes... but he doesn't actually notice he feels it, because that's 24/7 for Rex. ]
2-🕯️Candles are for Birthday Cakes 🕯️
So just to be clear, are any of us Candles?
[ He says this because they've just turned a corner to a bunch of nasty squid people and he'd really like a Candle for this. He might have been specifically chosen to be The Hero, but they were born for this. They should pull their weight, instead of incessantly whining about superpowers, which basically all Candles seem to do in his opinion. He feels pretty confident in his resistance to mental manipulation since his artificial spine is packed with something similar to the rings, but he knows from experience that telekinesis is a bitch. ]
3- 💉Science! 💉
This entire facility is very poorly designed. [ Rex says this as he injects some weird goop into one of the tubes, watching it float with the flow for a while before it coagulates into a thick clot. Counting down from 10 under his breath, when he hits 0 is when also when one of horrid fish hits the lump. It's apparently concussed, so boiling the fluid with a wave of his hand fries it before it can recover. ] These things should be hidden.
4- 🧠 Not so smart now, huh? 🧠
[ After a few encounters with horrid brain meddling monstrosities, Rex has opted to take a practical if an unorthodox method of dealing with them. It took him about 20 minutes of fiddling around with one's decapitated head before he's satisfied- carrying around the head in the crook of his arm, like a baby. The next time a flayer crosses their path and tries to read a mind, it starts blasting nasty goo out of all of its head orifices, spasming on the ground and making noises that are possibly the eldritch abomination equivalent of crying for mother. ]
Hmm. I was expecting a total head implosion. [ Careful what you wish for- the head in his arm pops. He grunts and flicks his hands to get the goo off of them. ] Oh. Well. Getting closer, I suppose. Shall we find another head?
5- Wildcard it

[Kokoro says this, but she's stepping forward anyway, armed as she usually is.]
Something feels strange about this place. Surely an effect of the creatures inside.

[A small grenade got thrown past Rex and into the group of Illithids, where it exploded into a short-ranged burst of darts. Of course, that's not the candle power. Gunvolt steps forward next to Rex and activates his Flashfield, a broad aura of lightning, which immediately started arcing toward the Illithids unfortunate enough to be caught in the burst of darts.
They hate it. It's very much Radiance based. And fortunately, the Flashfield isn't harming Rex at all, and serving as quite a potent shield.]
If you've got more juice to back this up, use it, Rex.
