A Grim Confrontation
Who: Valvatorez, Keith, James, Adelaide
When: November 20
Where: The Warren of the Necromancer
What: Finishing the fight against The Necromancer that brought forth the Grimm
Warnings: Violence, horror (general), body horror (Necromancy), gore, torturous-adjacent things. It's not a pretty place. Or business.
Finding the place had taken some time and study. But it could not be hidden forever. And now was time to put an end to it. The small Daybreak team arrived on location, and the doorway sealing the hideaway was blown open by a magical incantation. There was not going to be subtlety or subterfuge on this mission. It was about sending a message and taking down a target that was weakened hard, and fast.
A handful of small Grimm emerged from the portal, only to be quickly slashed out of existence with a practiced swing of a sword.
Valvatorez turned to his students.
"Be careful inside. Check your corners, and make sure you always keep an eye on your back. ...As well as above and below you. Complete situational awareness is important in dealing with a den like this. There will be traps and enemies lurking everywhere. Stay close to me, and I will remain on point. Do not separate from each other, or you will be overwhelmed. Use lethal force against your foes at all times. They will not play nice. Neither will we."
With that, the group marched inside.
The lair within was dark and somewhat confined. The hallways often twisted and turned, doubling back upon themselves in a labyrinthine manner. Despite the cramped, dank corridors, the location also did not seem especially huge, either; but rather very densely packed. Growls of the Grimm in the shadows echoed throughout the hall, glowing red eyes ducking back and forth in the darkness.... But Grimm were not the only things left.
In dead ends and alcoves along the way, the remains of some of the Necromancer's victims are strung up; horrific, macabre totems, meant to display her power... and perhaps, prove a danger for the unwary...

Exploration in the Dark - The Path of Torment

[Geez, talk about grim. Adelaide grimaces at the mess they've found themselves in, looking to her companions. She's keeping close to Valvatorez, hoping that between the two of them they can protect the...squishier members of the party. Sorry, James, but you're still just a human and Adelaide doesn't want you to get hurt.]
And the outside was pretty bad.

[ Which is honestly an achievement, considering James has had many nightmares about their ill-advised previous run-in. He's glad they're faculty-sanctioned now with a teacher to accompany them. Their little team of students may still be largely the same, but they've all had the chance to learn the hard way - from experience.
And still, James feels so tense he might snap. ]

Guys, quiet!
[There's already a sword in his hand, one that's bright with fire, and another sword strapped to his back -- one that might be familiar to some as the one taken from the first Herald's Death Knight. He has every intention of finally fucking ending this necromancer and it's gotten him a little testy.
His eyes narrow as he studies the surprisingly empty corridor. At the first sign of something moving in the shadows, Keith's quick to send flames straight at it. Whatever the fuck it was, it lets off a plume of foul black smoke as it smolders.]
We're doing it right this time.
no subject
I don't see the point of being quiet when our entrance was like that.
[Valvatorez isn't exactly subtle.]
They already know we're here.
no subject
Keith has a point. We'll distract ourselves with the chit-chat.
no subject
He gets it in the form of something dripping from the ceiling. In fact, if they're not all careful they all get to experience a dark tarry substance landing on their heads.]
What the--
[Keith looks up and a spider-like Grimm scuttles around half concealed in shadows, oozing venom from its mandibles. The beast comes crashing down and charges straight at them.]

Adelaide grimaces, not so thrown by seeing a Grimm after the nightmare that was their attack on campus. She readies her blade, taking a swipe at the creature's legs when it gets near her.
She's...definitely going to take out a couple. Eat shit, Grimm.]
I'm not easily distracted.

[ This opinion about the Grimm just had to be verbalized. James would stand to never see any of them ever again. The attack on the school is one of his biggest regrets - it had been their fault. They'd put everybody into jeopardy. It taught James well that his growing recklessness was a slippery slope. Now he's here to correct it all, and he doesn't feel like messing around.
The hands of his armors shoot short range energy beams in quick succession. James floats upwards a bit, both producing radiance, and placing himself in position to shoot at the creature's eyes. ]
Don't take chances!

Rearing up as much as it can, the spider spits out a spray out tarry black venom that corrodes whatever organic matter it comes into contact with. Best not to be hit with that.
Professional grump over here sticks to his policy of zero chitchat and dodges the venom spray to send a retaliatory blast of fire straight at its face.]
Adelaide, get on its back and stab it! We'll keep it occupied.
Boss Battle - The Necromancer

...You just could not wait for me to come find you, could you? [There's a bitter, evil, foul cackle that follows the statement.] But I suppose you did save me the trouble of hunting you wretched children down.
[Immediately from the darkness, a spear made of fetid bone launched toward the team, attached to some sort of sinewy chain, with the intent to drag any unfortunate victim back into the darkness with it as it reels back in. Best dodge it.
For the moment, that was the only attack thrown at them, though there are some horrific sounds of bones and flesh gnashing out of sight in front of them.]
I have not forgotten you... and I have a special place for each and every one of you.
[And with little more than that, a spread of necrotic magic bolts launched out into the group, starting the battle in earnest.]
no subject
Don't flatter yourself. We've learned from last time.
[ Spoken through grit teeth. Experimentally, James launches an energy shot from his rifle. Last time, it didn't do him much good, but he's adjusted tirelessly since. In theory it should be able to damage her now. ]
no subject
There's a lot of things he wants out of this, and a need for redemption keeps him laser focused as he dodges the first series of attacks. He's not gonna back down -- he's gonna get to the core of that mist and cleave her in two--]
I'll fucking kill you!
[He raises his sword, sending another burst of flames into the mist where she's hidden.]
no subject
Which is precisely what she's going to do.
She calls over her shoulder, darting forward while pulling her blade out to it's full length as a spear.]
Keep your head on straight, Keith!
[It's not going to do to fall into a rage.]
no subject
That goes for all of you! Keep it together and watch each other's backs.
[Valvatorez raised a fist in front of him, opening in his fingers slowly as blue magic leapt from it; his students would quickly get the feeling their defenses were being magically bolstered. If these kids insisted on rushing headlong into a fight, he better make sure anything incoming would be blunted.
For his own part, he started walking toward the mist at a deliberate pace, as if almost uncaring what the Necromancer might throw at him; he was more ready to jump in front of his students if he needed to. Until then, he'd let them apply pressure on her.]
You will try, wretch.
[The sound of James's shot connecting with... something inside the mists can be heard, along with the sizzle of seared flesh and the seething of the Necromancer; followed by the blast of fire magic Keith so aggressively flung into the darkness.
There is no retort to it. Verbally, anyway. Instead, the ranged attacks are retaliated with much larger Necrotic Bolts, one aimed at each of them, and the wicked shots will prove to have a nasty trick: They're not totally dumbfire, instead curving to attempt to hit in the case of a dodge. Their homing is far from perfect and can be evaded; but they do seem to like seeking targets that are expressly alive. Fortunately, these projectiles are several leagues weaker than those from Xelvak as well.
For Adelaide though, something much more dangerous. A massive, misshapen arm strikes out in a slash at her with wicked claws. Though the strike is swift, it can be quickly seen the arm is constructed of a horrific mixture of humanoid flesh and bone... as well as what looks to be parts of the Grimm as well.]
no subject
He only has time to release a breath after the impact shook him - then he sees the... good lord what is that?! ]
Adelaide! Watch out!
no subject
She manages to avoid the swipe, dancing backwards from the- the weird, fucked up arm. She takes a swing at it for good measure, but she has to do some thinking. She doesn't have a lot of ranged options, but she doesn't want to just hang back and do nothing.
She glances back at Valvatorez, waiting for any sort of signal or sign.]
I'm good, I'm good!
no subject
Keep my head on straight, huh?
[oh never mind, he's gonna take that second to sass adelaide before rushing forward to try and cut the weird arm off with the sword. this may or may not be a bad idea considering this particular sword is also embued with necromancy and will rot whatever it cuts, but yolo....???]
(I would like to apologize for the delay. My weekend was busier than expected.)
Keith's sword slices through the air and connects with the vile looking appendage, its blade cutting into the mass of human and Grimm flesh with surprising efficacy... but it doesn't go clean through. The flesh and sinew around the blade quickly begin to rot and decay... which only leaves the Necromancer laughing through it.]
That's a lovely toy you have, boy. I will quite enjoy possessing it once I finish squeezing the life out of you.
[Still, despite the boast, it seemed like the sword had... some measure of effect as a cutting weapon, but the decay frankly didn't seem to bother the creature at all. Its arm shook itself away from the sword, its wound stitching itself up slowly, the patch taking on the decayed texture of the rot Keith's blade caused.]
...And adding you all to my.... collection.
[Most of the mist quickly began to dissipate, revealing an absolutely horrific beast, made largely of an amalgamation of flesh of victims, as well as seemingly countless Grimm. If the Necromancer's main body was anywhere, it was hard to tell at first glance. Mostly a formless abomination, more akin to a slug than anything, it bore four large appendages in what looked like its front, each massive, and tipped with either claws or a single pointed spike made of bone. The ones with bones driven to a sharpened point also had their fore sides lined with jagged teeth; ones that looked like they belonged to Grimm of various sorts.
Despite its size however, it was still a physical form, and it still looked like it might have weaknesses: any moving part was a joint that could be attacked, especially with a piercing weapon from a range. And while it lacked a true "face," it could probably be deduced that hitting the front of it past its limbs might have an effect. If lessons at school could be remembered, it would rather obviously be weak to Radiance, holy magic, positive energy, fire, acid, or just good old fashioned slashing damage. It was still a creature of flesh and bone after all.
Valvatorez glanced over to Kieth's blade, and his eyes narrowed. He didn't mind the weapon's necrotic or necromantic capability in the slightest on principle, but... going after a Necromancer with a weapon like that? Honestly, Keith. Valvatorez called out to him and tossed him his own sword; it was plain in nature, but clearly magical and finely crafted.]
Use that blade instead, lad! You'll get farther with it. Hit it hard, and watch out for any further mutations!
[From inside his cape, the vampire simply drew another, different sword, something with a golden hilt and a glowing red core. He looked at the creature, studying it for a split second, before rushing forward and striking at one of the clawed arms with his sword to bind it up. The sudden assault was blocked, but it took two of her limbs bracing to match the strength of the blow, while a third limb readied to try to strike at the daemon.]
Now!!
...and then here's my apology for delaying the answer to the delay, ITS A WEEK....
But he's a professional, he doesn't have time to dwell on his disgust.
James is floating, producing as much radiance as he possibly can. It does not make him immune to hits from the creature, but he is heavily armored and he's hoping that most of it will hurt it more than it hurts him.
This in mind, he moves forward, aiming to irritate the beast while he tries to aim shots from his energy blasters beyond its appendages. ]
