[Open] Iceland Camping Trip

Iceland Camping Trip
Log Comm | Network Comm | OOC Comm | Navigation
The town of scenic Akureyri provides a perfect backdrop for a summer camping trip. It’s more than warm enough for greenery and unfrozen waters, and the townspeople, having been informed of the appointment ahead of time, are amenable and friendly to the newcomers passing through on their way to the planned site.
This is no ordinary holiday, however. Though the town is certainly welcoming, the idea is to camp, and camping is what everyone will be doing - at least for a little while. Professor Emille has her own planned schedule of activities, including river rafting and climbing, and in the spirit of physical education and getting some fresh air away from the Academy, attending students are highly encouraged to follow along with her. As well as those activities, the normal range of camping 'highlights' is present: cooking your own food over campfires and portable stoves, setting up tents, finding good places to sleep or hide, and simply passing the time in the beauty of nature. Just look out for puffins; they seem to be intensely curious about what all these strange people are up to, and you're no exception.
To occupy the campers while they’re recovering between stints of physical exertion, other activities have been provided; the Academy figures it can cover two things in one by providing arts and crafts materials for making convincing-looking ‘extraterrestrial debris’. Strange ‘artifacts’, bits and pieces of apparently offworld ‘technology’, and for those more morbid or curious students, making convincing-looking ‘alien’ skeletons are among the extra camping tasks that both students and staff can choose to take on.

No, we stake the sides and then insert the poles. The instruction manual would not steer us wrong.
[She'll be hard at work at the activities too, but outside of those, you can also find her taking a turn at the camp stove making... what is probably the blandest beef stew imaginable, are there turnips in this, is this army rations.]
I could use the Home Ec credit. Surely this will do its part to feed a crowd! Taste, on the other hand... No matter. Leave it to me!
camp whatever the heck she's doing at the stove KOKORO PLEASE
You sure you got this?

[She piles chunks of potatoes and turnips into the pot, followed by cold water, flour, and ugh is that lard.]
Such cooking is guaranteed to fill all those to eat it -- are they certain there's enough room in this pot? Perhaps I should leave out the onions.
Group 1 - Riverside path
This path is easy on the feet, but those who dislike water, beware -- you may have to get wet!]
[OOC: If possible, please limit the participants in each group to 3 or less. Please message me if you have anything in particular that strikes you about this path and would like to include it! This top post can also be used as an OOC question post for this path if needed.]
Group 1 - Riverside path
The instructions left with the group were: Make your way to the campground. Along the way, you will make three stops to pick up three items that you will need to take to the campground. These three items will require some ingenuity to obtain. In order to help you find these items, you have been given a magic-infused bell that will chime as soon as you come near one of them. This bell can also be rung at any time if you feel you are in danger, and a faculty member will make their way to you as quickly as they can. Persevere, and you will succeed!]
[OOC: I'll let the group members check in before proceeding with the plot.]

She has a small bag that had been packed a few days in advance, some things that one would normally expect to be taken on a camping trip, plus some supplies to be used if anything happened to go wrong while they were out here. She is also the one carrying the bell, at least for the time being.]
no subject
Let me know when the bell rings, my pack is a little noisy here...

[Since Ky is handling the heavy stuff, Becky's staying a few feet behind him, letting him lead the way at whatever pace he's comfortable with right now. For anything that needs doing otherwise, she or any other students there with her can step up.
... Honestly, she probably would have been carrying some of that stuff too, if it weren't for the fact that she can't really handle anything especially-heavy due to her size, not to mention she's the one with the Flame-given healing power and this group's just-in-case medical supplies, making her the one that'll have to respond if anyone else with the two of them manages to get themselves hurt.]

[He suddenly spoke up, giving a reassuring smile as he continues walking, nodding to other hikers they pass by]
Iceland is a little cooler than what I'm used to.
stop 1: the island
[As the group walks the relaxed path around the river, they will notice a small stream break off from the river and flow around a piece of land that is now more-or-less isolated in the middle of the Glerá. This tiny island is populated with a few juniper shrubs and skinny birch trees, but is otherwise unremarkable.
Except... As the group passes by, the bell chimes for the first time. There is something worth finding on that island.
The stream can most likely be jumped over by someone with long legs, but there is also a makeshift natural stone "bridge" that can be hopped on to get across to the island.
Once on the island, the bell's chime grows louder the closer it gets to the trees. They aren't extremely large birches, but they are taller than the average human. Search up and down and all around and see which direction causes the bell to ring even more loudly!]

When it is determined to be somewhere across the water, she starts looking for the best place to cross and it doesn't take long to notice the stones forming a path that can be taken to get to the island.
Considering Ky's carrying all of that stuff, and the fact that Becky herself is physically a child with the energy to spare, she also determines that it'll be best for her to get across the stream first to start investigating. Also, she has the bell, which they need in order to determine where, exactly, what they're looking for is.
So she wastes no time in quickly hopping across those stones, and finds herself pausing at the trees when the bell chimes even louder.
Calling back across to the rest of her group:] Hey, it's sounding like there's something in the trees!

Group 2 - Forested path
This path is moderately challenging and for those who love to be adventurous and don't mind blazing their own trail!]

Be wary. I should hope we won't need to use this as a bear bell.

It could always be a friendly bear.

There's gotta be some.
stop 1: the ancient evergreen
[At this point in the trek, the forest remains relatively open, with plenty of sunshine filtering through the masses of evergreen branches. There have been a few boulders scattered along the makeshift path, and the group may have even scaled over a few just to do so, though it wasn't necessary to get this far along.
However, the point they have reached now is a bit different. Towering in front of the group is an ancient spruce tree, very tall and magnificent, casting a long, dark shadow across the beaten path. The tree is perched on top of a large boulder, its thick roots engulfing the grey stone. The boulder is at the center of a rocky ledge that the spruce is teetering on the edge of.
The bell chimes in proximity to the spruce. But where could it be pointing to? The group will need to climb onto the ledge in order to investigate. There seem to be small natural footholds in places, and the roots of the spruce or other trees dangling off the ledge can be used as support.]

Group 3 - Cliffside path
This path is physically challenging, but will provide the best views, if taking pictures and making memories is your thing!]

And teamwork, she guesses, but. She's not sure how she feels about that, even now. But she waits patiently, nevertheless. ]
no subject
They would have to take the cliff. If they even can. They stare up at the imposing wall, before finally making their way to whatever person they're meant to be working with.]
Are you going down this path too?
no subject
Yes. Is your body properly reinforced for such activities?
no subject
No. But I can probably get it stitched later.
[ With much, much anger in the Boss's part. ]
stop 1: the biggest boulder
[The craggy path continues to rise in elevation, growing steeper as the ground becomes more gravelly. Tiny rocks fly out from under feet as the group hikes on, and they tumble down the ravine formed by the river below. It seems to be getting a little precarious in spots...
That's when the hillside reaches a bit of a grassy plateau, and the path flattens out for a short while. The next rise in elevation is visible on the other side of this plateau, but for now it is a short respite from the uphill climb.
The most interesting thing about this grassy strip, however, is the large rock that sits squarely in the middle. It must have rolled down from the top of the cliffs in ages past, as it is comfortably resting in an indention it has made within the grass. And, even more curiously, the bell begins to chime the closer the group comes to the rock, indicating the first item has something to do with the boulder.
But... Where can one examine in regards to a boulder? It looks so snug in its spot, too... Maybe if someone takes a good look around?]
