Payback Time

PAYBACK TIME
Log Comm | Network Comm | OOC Comm | Navigation

The daemon base was large, a massive obsidian skull carved from the base of a black, foreboding mountain within the Outlands and surrounded by a forest of dead trees. This was inevitable, as accompanying faculty could explain. As much as it could influence the human world, the Outland was heavily influenced and shaped by human thought and culture. Weaker daemons, such as those within the base, would find their personality, forms, and even desires inexorably shaped by the thoughts of humanity and what was perceived humans would expect and fear.

The focus of the two main assault groups would be the clearing of the main hall and the lower dungeons. The groups will be divided as follows:

Main Hall:
Ky
Mav
Kanata
Tyzias
Gunvolt
Bumblebee

Main Hall Support:
Toki
Kano

Dungeon:
Valvatorez
Goro Akechi
Ren
Minako
Naoki
Keith

Dungeon Support:
Ekkehardt
James

Control Room Supervisor:
Yang

To get through to the fortress proper, the students will have to make their way through the forest. This is an open log, even for those who didn’t sign up and will consist of clearing a path and fighting off living trees and mimics in the form of any number of objects that would otherwise be expected in forests such as rocks, brambles, bushes, and other foliage..

The Main Hall is lined with massive rooms full of daemons such as the banquet hall, treasure vault, and throne room where the daemon lord resides. The Daemon Lord is the target here, and he’ll be well-guarded. Beware! Many of the rooms are trapped with mimics taking the form of treasure chests, braziers, boxes, barrels, and just about any other item.

The Dungeons are where captured humans are kept and tortured. The objective is to free the humans and defeat the Jailer, a powerful Daemon who runs the chambers. Students should beware, doppelgangers are said to be commonly slipped in amongst prisoners to ferret out rebellion and will be hidden in with those who are to be rescued.

The Control Room is located in the Citadel, with a massive monitor visualizing the area with floor plans and video feeds. All students and faculty will be wearing small cameras that will record live footage, and will be wired with a communication earpiece that will let those in the Control Room communicate freely. Students working in the Control Room will be able to relay data and information, and use the powerful supercomputers to analyze items on the ground in near real-time.

[The path is dimly lit with only a single torch lit on the far end for any kind of lighting. Keith scowls, watching as strange shadows flicker on the walls, though there doesn't seem to be anyone physically present. It's quiet. Or at least as quiet as shit can get with a nuisance buzzing away in his ear piece.]

The place isn't secured yet.

[That's hissed and muttered low.]

I'm not freeing the prisoners just for unexpected bullshit to happen because we didn't check this route, so just shut up and work with me here. Weird shadows are on the walls ahead, you sure the scanners aren't picking up any life forms?

No, I'm not.

[ A flat-out answer, though the shuffling noises in the background may betray that James is checking their instruments yet again. ]

I said readings are unclear - something might be jamming them.

Real helpful there, thanks.

[Can you just... taste the sarcasm there.]

I'm going in.

[Technically, it's not James' fault and Keith knows that, but he can't help feeling that the scanners were all KINDA POINTLESS if there are daemons or whatever that can evade them anyway. Sword in hands, Keith stays close to the walls, hoping not to get snuck up on from behind.

As he approaches, the strange shadows flicker and coalesce into an outline of something -- some creature.

You seeing this.

Affirmative.

[ James sounds tense now. The scanners are still proving to be very little help overall. ]

I can send the others to you at a moment's notice, but proceed with caution.

[James can't see it, but the advice makes him roll his eyes. What was he gonna do, proceed with no caution? But no, he's not about to bicker and get distracted.. As he gets closer the shadow creature lifts what appears to be a battle axe.

Keith stops short, glancing between the lit torch and the wall. Is the thing invisible? Actually a shadow? Some kind of fire daemon? Or is this whole thing a distraction to keep his focus on the wall and away from the creature's main body? The possibilities ar frustratingly endless.

Teeth grit, Keith crouches low to the ground, feeling for a loose pebble on the ground. Maybe throwing something at it will reveal more information.
]

Back up's just gonna get in the way. I can handle this

It's an unknown creature with an ax. Don't charge in alone.

[ Sounding tense is transforming into sounding legitimately stressed. Is it concern for the mission, his own evaluation, Keith's well-being? Yes, all of that.

Being in control room is an honorable and important job, but right now it is really killing James to have what amounts to a spectator seat. ]

["Don't charge in alone" is perfectly reasonable advice and with reasonable person it might have thre intended result. Unfortunately for James and any evolving stress ulcers, he's dealing with Keith. Once his fingers close around a jagged rock, Keith takes swift aim at the shadow on the far wall and ducks back for cover.

The preliminary attack has several effects. 1) It strikes something solid and metallic that's standing invisible in the room. 2) The invisible metallic something is clearly pissed the fuck off by this assault and the corresponding shadow takes a hefty reflexive swing with the battle axe. And probably most pressing of all, said shadow is getting smaller as it moves away from the fire and takes heavy steps towards Keith.
]

Ah, shit.

[Stated less in a panicked tone of voice and more like shorthand for 'well this is inconvenient'.]
