Every year, as the school year comes to a close, Daybreak Academy holds its Prom, an immense gala for the students to dress in their finest clothing, dance, mingle, and make merry. This year’s prom theme, selected by the outgoing student council, is “The Unyielding Spirit of Man”. Held in Soleil’s performance center, the enormous stage has been pulled out to make a huge dance floor, with the seating rearranged around the floor on all sides for onlookers to mingle, eat, and enjoy the festivities.

In keeping with the theme, the hall is decorated with tributes to mankind’s ingenuity, with various exhibits tastefully marked with museum-like plaques surrounding it. Exhibits celebrating all manner of inventions from fire, to the written word, to spellcraft, runecraft, and flight, all are commemorated here.

Of course, no prom, or indeed any Daybreak event would be complete without food. While each exhibit serves as an educational tribute to mankind’s accomplishments, each station is also a themed food dish. The tribute to fire, for example, hosts a variety of roasts and barbecued meat of the finest cuts, while the agriculture exhibit holds a bevy of fresh fruits, vegetables, and salads. Some of these pairings are a bit of a stretch (the tribute to flight, for example, holds sandwiches and peanuts, a reference, perhaps to airline food) but all are made with the finest of ingredients.

A - So about that airline food?
Mingling at the banquet table is a good way to be social without worrying about stepping on anyone’s toes. While proms and the herald may dull the appetite for some, it would be a waste to let all the food go untouched.

While there are Faculty and Grad students volunteering to keep these particular drinks spike-free, they cannot be watching it the whole time. However, if one plans to do this - do not get caught.

B - Dance! Boogie Wonderland!
As part of the theme, the variety of music has expanded greatly from the usual prom fare - long as it’s danceable, it’s being played, and sometimes the results are jarring going from a disco classic to a regal waltz, or a crooner love song to a bouncy k-pop chart topper that will get stuck in one’s head. Can you keep up with the mad pace? It’s enough to get even the most seasoned dancer hopping mad.

Or will it be viva la music revolution to get some sanity on the dance floor?

C - A Collection of Wallflowers
Maybe socializing isn’t your thing, or dancing isn’t the kind of activity you enjoy. There’s plenty of seating around the room for you to shuffle into a corner and spend the evening holed up with a plate of food. And for those more interested in poking and prodding at the exhibits, there’s a few little themed trinkets and prizes hidden away for the keen-eyed. Elegant wands that produce sparkles, bubbles and smoke, miniscule instruments, sparklers and colorful torches that never go out (and notably can’t set anything on fire) - all made to produce flashy effects, to spice up your experience on the dance floor - or someone’s experience, anyway.

D - Wine and Beer
As is typical of Daybreak, there’s an open bar with rich, well-aged ales and wines from all over Europe. And it is, of course, open to just about everyone. After all, this is France! For those who want to take a bit of an edge off the night, their worries about what is to come, or just generally be more sociable, there is plenty of libation to help you get there. Just be careful, nobody’s going to be counting your drinks but you.

Okay. [He looks at Gongenzaka... expecting him to take the lead to which buffet they want to choose from. His suggetsion, he's taking the lead.]

[Well he will do just that then!] Let us see...they have a fairly similar spread for food, between now and the last dance, [he observes.] If I, the man Gongenzaka, am correct, that should mean...

[...He was going to note the meats, but he pauses. This. This is for Yuuya. For Yuuya, so-]

...They should have the same desserts as before, yes? [He winks, grinning at the other.]

Well, the theme is different, but... the food is always good anyway. [And he needs to remember to fill some tupperware later. For now, though, he stops by the desserts with Gongenzaka, and doesn't deliberate long before he grabs a little cup of creme brulee.]

Exactly..! And...even if the theme differs, the varieties are still relatively the same yes? [There's always going to be cheesecakes, and fruit tarts and...

...Annnnnd he's going to grab an orange one because that's Probably the best one for him.]

I think so? [Yuya stabs his spoon through the sugar, crunching it around spoonfuls of custard as he stares at the dance floor with a vacant expression. And eats.]

... This is a... date, right?

Mnh!

[He pops one mini-tart into his mouth, and-

Almost chokes, not that there's outwardly much reaction. He takes a moment to swallow before answering.] I-

...Did you feel it is not? [He...thought it was a date right? He did ask, and all. So it's probably a date. Definitely-

....

Gongenzaka deflates.] ...I...

...I, the man Gongenzaka...do not know how to make it seem more like one, if that is the case...

N-no! [Yuya whips back around to face him.] I just didn't want to have the wrong idea! You should... what matters is what you're comfortable with.

A-Auh-

O-Of course!

...As long as you as well are comfortable! [b o y s]

Well, I've never been on a date... [He glances aside, running a hand back through his hair--and getting tangled in his ponytail.]

I'm not uncomfortable! [Somewhat true.] I'd say something if I was, so you don't have to worry.

W-well, neither have I, after all... [he remarks with something of an embarrassed cough, scratching his cheek.] Auh...then...

...

...Perhaps...if we just do as we normally would at such an event, that would be best..? [not that they normally dance BUT that's still happening.]

Yeah. [Yuya ducks his head down as he shovels the rest of the creme brulee in his mouth, instead of making this conversation any more awkward.] That's fine! It doesn't really have to be a date I guess, we're friends.

[But why did he ask him out as more than friends?? Asking that seems too confrontational, he doesn't want Gon forced to perform what he's not comfortable with.]

But.

...It is a date? [YUUYA.] ...I, the man Gongenzaka, was the one who asked...

[Too late Yuuya, IT'S AWKWARD.]

...Is there something we are required to do, to make it such? [Because, if neither of them have had one, he sort of assumed they were both equally lost here, but maybe not???]

Well... every other time wasn't a date, right? [Yuya's been sitting on these feelings a while. He doesn't need the kinds of wait and see date to know that he likes him, but it's also been so long that he hadn't considered that's really a thing that people do. Wait and see.]

But I don't want you to do anything you don't want!

Auhh....no, it was not. [But !]

...But, perhaps, it can simply be a date because we decided it? I...

[He takes a deep breath, steadying himself.] Yuuya.

I, the man Gongenzaka, would not ask you something unless I was certain enough of it to do so. I would not say, 'let us try a date', if I did not absolutely wish to! Therefore Yuuya...I, the man Gongenzaka, swear to you- I am not doing anything I do not already wish to do, right now.

[...........] ...Save perhaps these shoes...however, that was still my choice!

[Yuya scrapes his spoon around in a circle along the bottom of the cup.]

Do you... really like me like that? [A pause.] Because I really like you.

I...

[Gongenzaka can feel his heart pounding in his chest, and he realizes it just as well. And he wants to simply say 'yes'.

But the problem is he doesn't know what 'that' refers to.] I...do not know, [he admits.] I do not know, what defines 'that'. I do not know the words for the feelings I have- they are feelings I do not have for any other, and as I am not any other for that matter I cannot say what 'That' would mean. Is there something specific, that defines such a thing after all?

...I know that I am happiest when I am with you. I know that making you happy, is what makes me happy as well- whether by going to far away places to be with you, or finding something that would be best as a gift...I do not know the words for my feelings, because they are not simply defined by happiness either. ...But instead by the worry, when you are in danger, or when I do not know where you have gone...the sadness, when I feel you are upset as well... [He adds, his eyes watering at the mere thought.]

If...such feelings cannot be what 'That' is, it feels impossible to know what else it could be- for you, Yuuya, are the only one to make me feel so strongly in any of these ways..!

[Yuya was just expecting a yes or no, so he looks up in mild surprise as Gongenzaka starts with something longer--and them his eyes widen more as his face flushes a deep red, and he nearly drops his cup.

He scrambles to put it on the table, gaze drifting away and back to Gongenzaka. It sounds so good, and for a moment he's swept into feelings not of what's best or what Gongenzaka deserves, but just what he wants.

So he leans in, shifting up on his toes as he catches Gongenzaka's sleeve for support.] Do you want to kiss?

[wh]

...H-

K-Kiss..!? [On the one hand his face is beet read. On the other, he is very obviously flustered as heck now. Gongenzaka stammers, trying not to lose what composure he still has.] I-

It is the first date, is it not?? I-

I do not even know how to kiss for that matter!

[asking for a kiss may have been a bad idea]

I've never kissed either! [Yuya's not really less nervous, his whole body feels pricked with needles of nervousness. But he's wanted this.]

Do you want to kiss?

I-

I don't know..! Y-Yuuya, I have never even thought of kissing before..!

[This may have been a Bad answer,]

Not... not anyone? [His feet fall flat again.] Don't you love your friends that much?

[Isn't it normal, for best friends to be someone you want to give the world to, to be swayed by how they feel? Maybe it's just Yuya, who feels too much and too strongly about everything. He knows the way it feels is different between Gongenzaka, and Nana, and Kano. But he couldn't say one was more than the others.]

[hah-]

...Is the desire to kiss another truly what defines a love for someone..? [he asks confusedly- and perhaps, almost sadly. For him, his love is very very strong- the problem is he's never thought of expressing it like that.]

No, it--[Yuya bites his lip, pulling back. He averts his gaze down.] Nevermind, it's just a weird question. Uh--I need to go to the bathroom.

[So he can be alone with his humiliation.]

Auh-?

[No- no, something is wrong, he has definitely made something Wrong-] I...

...I will wait for you then, [he insists, nodding.

He doesn't know what else to say.]

[Yuya scurries off, then. And he's going to hide in the stall for fifteen minutes if Gongenzaka doesn't come after him.]
