Thunder Rumbles
An Unexpected Call
[When classes end for the day, Gunvolt is surprised to hear his cell phone ring a familiar tune. It's one that's reserved for his boss, and QUILL related business. Asimov. It's rare that Asimov reaches out at a time like this, so Gunvolt quickly excused himself, going someplace a little more quiet. Unfortunately, as it's after class, there's nowhere truly private to go in a hurry, so it might be possible to eavesdrop on the conversation... if you're so inclined.
GV keeps his phone volume low by default, but those with enhanced senses, either by magic, race, or whatever, might be able to make out what the person on the other end is saying.]
Asimov? That you?
Sure is. Sorry to call you out of the blue like this, GV.
It's fine. What's up?
Wanted to let you know in advance. There's a job coming up, and we're going to need you for it. It's big.
Solo work?
No, not this time. Can't tell you much yet, just that we'll be teaming with your school. They have a vested interest in op... and having the extra hands and help would be useful.
...What's so important that you want to involve Daybreak?
...Sumeragi. I cannot tell you anything else yet. Not until we brief the entire team. I need you on this job. Can I count on you?
[At that, Gunvolt remained quiet for a moment, poorly concealing a look of surprise at the name. Still, after a moment to compose himself, he answered.]
Always.
Good. Thank you. Get geared up and prepared; it won't be easy. Bring your best, GV. I am counting on you.
I won't let you down, Asimov.
You never do. Hasta la vista, GV.
Talk to you later, Boss.
[With that, Gunvolt hangs up his phone and starts on his way. Curious about it, or were you nearby? Or maybe pretend you didn't hear anything? Your call.]
Briefly, A Respite
[Though Gunvolt's been as busy as ever, he's done a much better time managing his time and even learning when to take breaks and time off. Having been buried in his studies, training, and equipment maintenance and creation all week, he simply decided that today was a day off, even knowing of the phone call he got. A small part of him told himself to be preparing... and the rest of him decided being rested and relaxed was part of being prepared.
So today, he wanders around campus, looking for people he knows and take some time to actually be out and socialize. He'll wander many of the popular spots, and eventually out into Soleil itself. Part of his intent is to clear his own head... and maybe, just maybe, drag some other people around for some relaxation themselves.
After all, he wasn't the only workaholic around. Maybe it was time he did his part to pay it forward to all the people who got him to learn how to not overdo it.
So at some point, Gunvolt will approach you while you're doing whatever it is you're doing.]
Hey. How's it going? Not overdoing it, are you?
[...Like he's one to talk.]

[Need or want GV for something this month? Want to talk to him about something, catch him while he's working on equipment, or commission him for something? Hit him up here, he's available all of October so long as he's not on mission.]

respite / at their room
For most of the past week or so, it'd been pretty clear that Desi was having trouble sleeping, so it was no real surprise to find her at the desk beneath her bed, just all kinds of splayed out across the thing, having nodded off right there instead of making the effort to get into the bed itself.
It probably wouldn't be a terrible idea to try to get her up just long enough to actually do so. But then if she woke up, she would probably want to get back to those notes she had been writing down, considering how it looks like she was looking through yet another book borrowed from the library when exhaustion forced her to stop.]
no subject
[He keeps his voice very quiet, mumbling more to himself than anything else. He glanced over the notes that she might looking at; but a brief look was all he needed to tell what was going on.
He debated if he should rouse her at all. She needed the rest... but then again, you're not exactly going to be resting much face first on a reading desk. So, that's gonna be what it's gonna be. At least he'd be gentle in trying.]
Desi?
[He'd speak her name quietly a few times to try to rouse her, before resting a hand on her shoulder, in an attempt to wake her carefully.]
no subject
A couple more nudges and she's actually moving, picking herself up a bit and gradually staring in her roommate's general direction, only barely awake.] Mmmm, che ore sono?
no subject
[Gunvolt wasn't exactly a master of Italian, but he'd heard enough by now to know roughly what that meant, anyway.]
You may want to catch some Zs in bed, before you mess up your neck like that.
no subject
On one part of the screen, there's the clock, revealing that it's late afternoon. A bit closer to the top of the screen, there's a missed call notification from a contact whose name Gunvolt wouldn't recognize. The phone's been left on silent save for alarms, and none of the alarms Desi actually uses are set for Sundays, except for one intended to make sure she wakes up in the morning.
She reaches over to the phone and pokes it to dismiss that notification.]
I...hadn't intended to fall asleep there. [She hadn't intended to fall asleep on the couch in the commons on their floor a couple nights ago, either. That, at least, was probably less harmful than sleeping in a chair and using a desk for a pillow.]
no subject
[GV didn't really even bother looking at her phone; more of a respect of privacy thing. ...Never mind that he had peeked a little at her notes, that was a little different. Sort of.]
I'm probably not the best person to be saying this, but are you sure you're not overworking yourself lately?
no subject
no subject
[He of course knew she'd been looking for answers about things since she arrived here. The specifics, maybe not so much. But thinking on it, it seemed like over the past couple of weeks, she was working even harder than she was when she first arrived.
...Especially after the night of the Harvest, thinking on it.]
Something's really bothering you, isn't it?
no subject
Do you remember how Toki had made that post earlier in the month asking for volunteers so he could practice using one of his abilities? He wanted to 'see' different kinds of magic in order to start working on being able to identify them. You know, beyond what people normally would see.
I was one of the people who offered to help, so that's part of why I wasn't here on the tenth. [The other part of her absence that morning being her regular training sessions on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.]
The way he described the things I had showed him was...a bit concerning. [That's an understatement and both of them know it.] Neither of us saw any need for me to use any lightning, but between the fire and shadows, the aura he saw on the shadows looked...
The way he'd put it was "more there". Maybe it's just stronger than normal magic, that wouldn't be any real surprise. Or maybe it's because it comes naturally to me. Or... [Or, worst case scenario, she's not quite as human as she'd thought.]
no subject
[He took a moment to try to process that. Obviously it was easy to figure out what she was referring to with the context. And yeah, that was indeed troubling. There's no way around that... so of course she would throw herself into looking for answers.]
...Okay, so. You're not sure how much of your power is actually daemonic versus traditional magic, and it might even be more daemonic than you thought. Suddenly makes sense why you've been going on all cylinders plus two lately.
[GV reached around to scratch at his head, just above his braid, in thought.]
Have you had anyone else look into it since Toki did? That's just one "test," and while I don't have anything really bad to say about him, Toki's... not what I would consider the most reliable source, either. There might be more to the picture than just what he saw.
no subject
[She'd started by trying to see if she could figure out just what sort of daemon her mother had tried to contract, since that bit of knowledge had never really been given to her, despite it being one of the first things she really needed to know. Her method of searching so far has been to just start reading up on anything and everything daemons, and if she finds anything that sounds familiar—like for example if there happen to be any out there known to wield shadow powers similar to her own—follow up on that.]
no subject
[Even though that Valvatorez guy sounded like he knew his stuff, coming in armed with more knowledge to remove more guesswork might save some time...]
But you look like you're about spent, Desi. I know it's important to you, but maybe you should pack it in for a little while? Just get a chance to clear your head for a bit, y'know?
[He's aware of the irony of him saying that.]
no subject
If Gunvolt, workaholic he is sometimes, thinks someone's overdoing it, they are...probably overdoing it, yeah.]
Okay. I'll stop for now. [She's not planning to try going back to sleep or anything, though, as she hadn't intended to sleep in the first place. Doing so would just play some more hell with her sleep schedule, as messed up as it already is right now.]
no subject
Awesome. Tell you what? Why don't we head into Soleil, go for a walk, maybe grab something at one of the cafes down there? Just for both of us to get away from it from a bit?
no subject
Alright, but...let's avoid the busier ones for now. [Remember, GV, the horns won't be hidden; she can't wear hats, and she's no good at using glamours.]
no subject
[He didn't forget that much... and frankly, at least Soleil is a fairly accepting sort of town. But avoiding a higher-traffic cafe was easily enough done, just to keep things easier.]
I know a good one. Small, kinda hole-in-the-wall place, but the sweets are out of this world. I've gone there to study a couple of times back when I still lived with Maple.
no subject
She gets up from her seat and starts rummaging through her closet for her coat, pushing aside a few dresses and other things she hasn't yet worn since she first came here.]
no subject
For sure. It does well enough for business, but it's kinda slept on by most of the student body.
[He quickly threw on his jacket, arms through the sleeves like it was a well practiced motion.]
Think it's because it's not super trendy or anything. Kinda traditional. Lets its food and drink speak for itself. Staff's nice too. Probably should've taken you there sooner.
respite
How about you, though? [ He sees enough of Gunvolt doing stuff that he's aware he does a lot of stuff. ]
no subject
[So yeah, for once? Maybe he wasn't overdoing it. But it probably wasn't as easy for him as it he made it sound.]
Where are you off to, anyway?
no subject
[ Books, recipes, different kinds of food...the world of cooking is more vast than he could ever imagine! It's great. ]
But I was on the shooting range before! They won't give me a real gun since I'm too young, but I wanted to see what it was like. It's really tough!
no subject
[After all, a cooking club in a place like Daybreak would have to produce some good food, right? ...It almost made him hungry thinking about it.]
Oh, awesome! And yeah, it's tough at first, but you learn. ...What'd they give you as a stand-in, anyway? One of those magical airsoft guns they runed to have recoil?
no subject
The recoil's really bad, though. [ If he could frown, he would have. ] I almost dropped it a couple of times, and it makes my aim go all over the place. It's probably easier if you're not light like me, but maybe I'm not holding it properly...
[ He doesn't know a lot about himself, but he knows he's far lighter than other kids his size and age. It's probably a factor. ]
no subject
[They wouldn't simulate a .45 or something crazy for a newbie, right? That'd be crazy. And while there'd be other options for reducing recoil, GV figured the big problem might simply be lack of experience.]
Also, it's not just how you hold the weapon, your stance has a lot to do with it too. Using the right stance can help give you better accuracy and recoil control. How you plant your feet, how you distribute your weight, and the way your arms are held out all make a big difference. After all, a handgun doesn't usually have a stock to help absorb recoil like a rifle.
Next time you head over to the range, give me a call. I can teach you a few stances that might help you.
no subject
Really?? [ His eyes have grown even bigger than they are normally. Gunvolt is so cool. ] Is it okay if you teach me some stuff? You're busy too, right?
no subject
[The young man pauses to think for a moment. Vivi might be really light, so a stance might not be the only piece of the puzzle missing.]
So I figure we'll teach you that, and if that's not enough, we might need to put a muzzle brake on your weapon. Something like that will reduce the "kick" of the gun. Though it might not work for an airsoft training pistol, considering there's no gas to vent...
That's what magic's for, though. Still better to learn how to shoot without the crutch first, though.
Briefly
I think I'm a little careful with my purchases, what bring you to this part of Soliel?
no subject
Just looking to get away from everything for a little while, clear my head a bit. So I figured I'd walk through town and see if there's anything that catches my eye.
Pick up some new tea, Professor?
respite
Oh, Gunvolt, hey. [There's a pause.] I do think I could stand to take a break.
no subject
[He knows that much can be troublesome when trying to focus.]
...Want to go grab a drink or something? If you've got some time, anyway.
no subject
[She stretches a bit, then grins.]
Yeah, sounds great! I've got plenty of time.
no subject
[He starts heading toward the snackbars, already thinking about what he wanted to get.]
Is it just me, or have classes been more intense this semester?
no subject
Even just compared to the end of last semester, for sure. [She tilts her head thoughtfully.] Maybe it's because incidents keep cropping up?
[Nightfall getting nearer and all, which means more creatures advocating it starting shit.]
no subject
[He's aware he might have a screw loose here or there. He quickly figured out how far he was from "normal" just by being around other students.]
And yeah, I think you're right. After that whole mess with Xelvak it feels like the things popping up have been. Worse.
If I never have to deal with the Lord of the Hunt's horsejitt again, it'll be too soon.
no subject
[She pulls a face at the mention of the Lord of the Hunt.]
Tell me about it... I wasn't even in the thick of things and I get that.
no subject
[Because they don't need more crazy after all of that, do they?]
But that's a bit of a downer, sorry. You had anything actually good go on recently?
no subject
I'm almost done putting together my Halloween costume for this year! I got really lucky with some pieces at the secondhand market.
no subject
Oh? Do tell! If it's not a surprise, that is.
no subject
[She looks pretty excited about it, too.]
no subject
Swan Lake? Don't think I've ever read that one. So the black swan is actually a bird?
[...GV. Come on now.]
no subject
no subject
[Especially for a dance.... but hey, it obviously was about more than just that.]
So she's... not actually a swan, it's more of a metaphor. Got it. But I bet you're going to look great in the costume.
no subject
[Maybe the dude was just a petty asshole, who knows. But she nods.]
Thanks! I can't wait to show it off. What are you going to dress up as?
