the best defense is literally any defense at all
Who: Ekkehardt, OTA
What: Addressing a perceived deficiency in the current curriculum
Where: An empty classroom
When: 14th-20th
Warnings: Nothing should come up but I'll change the header if it does.
Notes: I'll match you!
A.
[ You might find Ekkehardt out of the infirmary for once, tacking up a few posters here and there where students frequent. They're nondescript and not meant to be particularly noticeable. They provide relevant information about an unofficial self defense class.
The only particularly interesting part (besides Ekkehardt breaking his own routine) is that he's clearly specified that this class is explicitly for noncombatants. ]
B. Introduction
[ Upon reaching the classroom, Ekkehardt is sitting at the teacher's desk with his hands free, for once. There's a selection of various weapons - wooden ones, foam ones, some that are clearly for historical re-enactment - and implements (is that an umbrella?) laid out on the front row of desks. All in good condition (some are practically untouched).
He shows no signs of picking them up, or what they're going to be used for.
When students walk in, he simply nods at them in greeting. The only thing he really says is: ]
Do you have any questions before class starts?
C. Ekkehardt what (Practicals, part 1)
[ After he's deemed there's a reasonable amount of attendance, he stands up and indicates the weapons in all their mismatched glory. ]
All right. Here is the subject of today's class.
One at a time, you'll face off against me. I will have a weapon - you may choose it, if you like. You, on the other hand, will be unarmed.
Your objective is to stop me from touching you with the weapon. Otherwise, I win.
D. NO, REALLY, WHAT (Practicals, part 2)
[ When class is over, he indicates the selection of implements on the desk once more. ]
For the second part of this class, I want you to take one of these with you. Return them to me once you've completed the secondary task - which many of you will find vastly more entertaining, I'm sure.
[ He smiles, faintly. ]
Your objective is to touch or hit me with your weapon of choice. If you can do that, you win. And remember - you don't have to fight me. It's ideal if you do not.
You just need that weapon to make contact with me.
[ Over the next few days, Ekkehardt will be going about his business as usual. If you see him getting assaulted by various students wielding various weapons, he doesn't seem to mind at all.
In fact, he seems to be kind of enjoying it, in a weird way?? ]
E. Wildcard
[ Did you come here to see Ekkehardt teach for once and not be a fusspot in the infirmary? Are you just curious about what a self-defense class for noncombatants entails? Literally anything else? Hit me I'll roll with it. ]

Of course, one of those might even graze Maverick if he's not watching to see how and where Ekkehardt is swinging it, and that too is on purpose. ]
I'm not particularly good with swords, [ he remarks, as if this is just a casual conversation and not a lesson. ]

Wa --
[...No, it wasn't Ekkehardt's job to watch it. That part was all on Maverick. Right. He adjusts both his expectations and his distance.]
Practice for the both of us, then.
no subject
It seems so.
[ He adjusts his grip on the sword, like he's figuring out what to do with it. Seemingly absorbed in the activity for a long moment, until he begins to move with fast but unwieldy strikes.
His clumsiness is at least partially genuine - he really doesn't know how to use a sword. But his movements and the arcs of his swings have a purpose, aiming to box Maverick in and drive him towards the desks and chairs, so he has less room to move and avoid him. ]
no subject
Perhaps disappointingly, Maverick doesn't seem too concerned about his steps back and skips to the side to dodge the sword, letting himself be driven deskwards. Then he vaults diagonally over the closest desk and hops up onto a chair so he can start gaining ground that way, apparently not bothered by the uneven level. He's a boy that likes to climb and run and jump all over the place, getting wherever he can with whatever methods available. Helps when it comes to making an escape from some weirdo with a sword! Sucks that there's nothing he can really use to keep an eye on everything going on behind him, settling for occasional glances and listening for odd sounds to help him predict Ekkehardt's movements.]
no subject
He makes a spirited attempt to knock the chair out from under him and unbalance him before he lunges, pushing the sword forward like a fencer rather than someone trained to the weapon. A stab is easier to avoid than a swing, in some cases. Think fast. ]
no subject
There wasn't a point where he could "win" this objective, only one where he'd lose, because it was just a matter of how long he could hold out. Infuriating...but that's life, isn't it? You hold out as long as you can and then it stabs you in the gut. That's the design. Still, the realization circling back around gives his movements tension, making them more erratic and prone to falling for any tricks.]
no subject
He notes that tension, but says nothing yet. Rather than try for another direct attack, he uses the chair he's just destabilized - kicking it at Maverick and then following it up with another slash, balancing on the chair himself to do so. ]
You don't have to be armed to put me at a disadvantage, though, [ he does say, in between strikes. Being armed when the other person is not is a significant thing, but it's not everything. He feels the need to say that, at least. ]
no subject
Don't have to be armed... There's a lot of things he could say or ask about, but he doesn't want to waste either his breath or his thinking time when he needs to keep staying out of reach. Leg is going to hurt from meeting the chair to catch it in a stop...but it's better than letting it knock him around, leaving him open. If he wanted to put Ekkehardt at a disadvantage, he could keep trying to use the environment as an obstacle, leaving both of them open to the other trying to destabilize them from kicking chair and desks, chucking something at him which he feels would be arming himself and not in the spirit of things, or...
...leaving??? It would certainly give him space to sprint, which he was good at. It'd give him the distance, too...and if Ekkehardt was running hard to keep up with him, it would be harder for him to swing the sword accurately. Until he could disarm Ekkehardt without risking getting touched, somehow, it could be his best option.
So... PEACE OUT, he's gonna try to make a break for it.]
no subject
He deliberately gives the boy a little more time to let him get ahead before pursuing - and Maverick is correct in that it's harder for Ekkehardt to both swing his sword in a way that doesn't slow him down and keep at his heels. ]
You've changed things to your advantage! Can you do more with it?
[ He's trying to push him to think, to be more aware of his surroundings. What can he do to block or impede a man running after him with a sword? ]
