the best defense is literally any defense at all
Who: Ekkehardt, OTA
What: Addressing a perceived deficiency in the current curriculum
Where: An empty classroom
When: 14th-20th
Warnings: Nothing should come up but I'll change the header if it does.
Notes: I'll match you!
A.
[ You might find Ekkehardt out of the infirmary for once, tacking up a few posters here and there where students frequent. They're nondescript and not meant to be particularly noticeable. They provide relevant information about an unofficial self defense class.
The only particularly interesting part (besides Ekkehardt breaking his own routine) is that he's clearly specified that this class is explicitly for noncombatants. ]
B. Introduction
[ Upon reaching the classroom, Ekkehardt is sitting at the teacher's desk with his hands free, for once. There's a selection of various weapons - wooden ones, foam ones, some that are clearly for historical re-enactment - and implements (is that an umbrella?) laid out on the front row of desks. All in good condition (some are practically untouched).
He shows no signs of picking them up, or what they're going to be used for.
When students walk in, he simply nods at them in greeting. The only thing he really says is: ]
Do you have any questions before class starts?
C. Ekkehardt what (Practicals, part 1)
[ After he's deemed there's a reasonable amount of attendance, he stands up and indicates the weapons in all their mismatched glory. ]
All right. Here is the subject of today's class.
One at a time, you'll face off against me. I will have a weapon - you may choose it, if you like. You, on the other hand, will be unarmed.
Your objective is to stop me from touching you with the weapon. Otherwise, I win.
D. NO, REALLY, WHAT (Practicals, part 2)
[ When class is over, he indicates the selection of implements on the desk once more. ]
For the second part of this class, I want you to take one of these with you. Return them to me once you've completed the secondary task - which many of you will find vastly more entertaining, I'm sure.
[ He smiles, faintly. ]
Your objective is to touch or hit me with your weapon of choice. If you can do that, you win. And remember - you don't have to fight me. It's ideal if you do not.
You just need that weapon to make contact with me.
[ Over the next few days, Ekkehardt will be going about his business as usual. If you see him getting assaulted by various students wielding various weapons, he doesn't seem to mind at all.
In fact, he seems to be kind of enjoying it, in a weird way?? ]
E. Wildcard
[ Did you come here to see Ekkehardt teach for once and not be a fusspot in the infirmary? Are you just curious about what a self-defense class for noncombatants entails? Literally anything else? Hit me I'll roll with it. ]

Then Ekkehardt gave out his challenge and Kohaku immediately understood the purpose of this lesson. She had undergone something similar, except she had been in Ekkehardt’s shoes, and she had been the student, and her sister had been the one trying to attack her. In an effort to make sure Kohaku was taking her lessons about constant vigilance seriously, Ako had used real knives.
Kohaku gave a whole body shudder at the memory of that week of terror.]
Oh god. He’s doing it willingly too!?

Toki looks over the weapons on display. He has absolutely no experience, so it doesn't matter which one is ultimately selected. Might as well make this amusing before he fails spectacularly. Toki bows deeply to Ekkehardt.]
Ekkehardt, I am honored to learn from you such a difficult technique that is no doubt replete with peril~! Since I respect you greatly~, I shall leave the choice of weapon in your capable hands~!
no subject
[ He hands Toki a baseball bat. ] Is this appropriate for you?
no subject
Are you serious!? Do you really think I'm that stupid!?
[He probably does, and okay, there's basis for that, but it's just embarrassing. He's not going to touch the one thing that's not supposed to make contact. He was trying to make an effort here.]

He's not taking the self-demotion super graciously, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed and giving every inch of the room a good glare to cement it in his memory and also just to mentally curse it out, because those desks? Fuck those desks. Those foam swords? Fuck them. That umbrella? ...Wait, what the fuck is an umbrella -- you know what, never mind. He's been smacked with an umbrella before. Fuck the umbrella, too.
When his turn comes up, he shifts his weight from foot to foot and prays that the stretching he did before making his way down to the classroom had been enough.]
Uh, you can pick whatever weapon. [Didn't matter too much to Maverick what it was until he was actually avoiding it.]
no subject
Of course, one of those might even graze Maverick if he's not watching to see how and where Ekkehardt is swinging it, and that too is on purpose. ]
I'm not particularly good with swords, [ he remarks, as if this is just a casual conversation and not a lesson. ]

Wa --
[...No, it wasn't Ekkehardt's job to watch it. That part was all on Maverick. Right. He adjusts both his expectations and his distance.]
Practice for the both of us, then.

A class like this, Kano has his doubts, but he also has very little to lose from participating; he has ample "class" time, after all, to pick up an unofficial one. And at the end of the lesson, the weapon he picks up is that umbrella. Touch Ekkehardt without him knowing... easy, right?
He waits until Ekkehardt returns to his duties in the infirmary again before rolling out his plan, hands shoved into his pockets and the umbrella seemingly not on him at all when he strolls inside the room- but Ekkehardt should know better. But in the infirmary, both their range of motion will be limited, having to be careful with all the jars and medicines lining the shelves; Ekkehardt being unarmed, and Kano having a weapon, he believes this should work in his favor. ]
Ekkehardt, hi~! I was wondering~ Bandaids have finally hit the minimum stock level, so I was wondering, could I get something different from you today? Some sort of antiseptic, but the kind that doesn't hurt?
no subject
But he carries on the conversation, because there's no point challenging them if he calls them out immediately. That's not what the class is about. ]
Something different today? [ He slides the tin back to its normal position on his desk. ] I'll see what I can do, then.
[ He opens one of the cabinets, back turned to Kano. Nope, nothing wrong here, it should be easy to tap him while he's not looking.
Probably. ]
no subject
[ It'd be easy, but Kano doesn't take the opportunity. There'd be no satisfaction that way, is what he wants to claim, but the smarter part of him says that Ekkehardt would be constantly vigilant and would expect a back attack.
Gotta be patient. And Kano, when he sets his mind on something, is nothing but tenacious. He waits, hands still deep in his pockets and humming a tuneless hum under his breath, leaning slightly to the side around Ekkehardt to see inside the cabinets he's rooting through, if there's anything useful in there that he can ask for specifically, at a later time. ]

Still, he finds himself feeling out of place. Only this time, it's not as one of the only adults needing to be taught or even the usual fact he's a dead man playing at living. Rubbing awkwardly at his arm, he waits until he can somewhat speak to Ekkehardt alone.
"Should I..." His eyes dart from the students and back to Ekkehardt. "... be here for this? I'd like to learn but I don't need to dodge the same things as these guys. And what I can do, I can't really show. I'm not sure how much good I am in any other way and I don't want to waste your time."
no subject
Which is kind of a vague thing to say when he's specified it's self-defense for noncombatants but whatever, Ekkehardt, keep being weird as you always do.
no subject
"What is it meant to do then...? Isn't defensive stuff a kind of combat?" He is sure there is a very wise and logical answer here. But he is neither wise nor logical.

So he's here to change that! He gives all the makeshift weapons a cursory glance before looking up at Ekkehardt.] What about if we touch the weapon, like taking it from you?
no subject
Disarming me, ideally, should be a quick process. So I'll allow it, if it's for the purposes of disabling my ability to use it.
[ Sometimes you do have to come into contact with the weapon you're facing, after all. There's worse things you can do than touching it yourself. ]

Is it, like, a body blow only, or any contact?
*Maya's approximation of a stance wasn't the real deal, and she clearly had limited confidence in her abilities. So she was ready for this to be a disaster.*

* He makes a sweeping gesture towards the weapons on the desks. *
Do you have any preferences?
no subject
I guess that knife.
*Limiting his reach seemed the best place to start. She didn't expect to block anything so just staying out of reach was the best call. Which wouldn't work with the umbrella.*

You think any of 'em got a chance of hitting you with a weapon?

If they're clever enough? Certainly. * He laughs a little. * But this is only the first class, so I'm not setting my expectations too high. This is just to see what they're capable of.

[Luckily, she had moved on and returned the heavy weapons from last month. A light weight practice staff was much more easier to manage, as much as she didn't want to admit. Puella wasn't planning to hit Ekkehardt very hard anyway - only a tap. She doesn't really have it in her, even if she wanted to. And yet, making the shot was taking longer than it should to execute. Like hesitating to swat a fly.]
