the best defense is literally any defense at all

Who: Ekkehardt, OTA
What: Addressing a perceived deficiency in the current curriculum
Where: An empty classroom
When: 14th-20th
Warnings: Nothing should come up but I'll change the header if it does.
Notes: I'll match you!

A.

[ You might find Ekkehardt out of the infirmary for once, tacking up a few posters here and there where students frequent. They're nondescript and not meant to be particularly noticeable. They provide relevant information about an unofficial self defense class.

The only particularly interesting part (besides Ekkehardt breaking his own routine) is that he's clearly specified that this class is explicitly for noncombatants.
]

B. Introduction

[ Upon reaching the classroom, Ekkehardt is sitting at the teacher's desk with his hands free, for once. There's a selection of various weapons - wooden ones, foam ones, some that are clearly for historical re-enactment - and implements (is that an umbrella?) laid out on the front row of desks. All in good condition (some are practically untouched).

He shows no signs of picking them up, or what they're going to be used for.

When students walk in, he simply nods at them in greeting. The only thing he really says is:
]

Do you have any questions before class starts?

C. Ekkehardt what (Practicals, part 1)

[ After he's deemed there's a reasonable amount of attendance, he stands up and indicates the weapons in all their mismatched glory. ]

All right. Here is the subject of today's class.

One at a time, you'll face off against me. I will have a weapon - you may choose it, if you like. You, on the other hand, will be unarmed.

Your objective is to stop me from touching you with the weapon. Otherwise, I win.

D. NO, REALLY, WHAT (Practicals, part 2)

[ When class is over, he indicates the selection of implements on the desk once more. ]

For the second part of this class, I want you to take one of these with you. Return them to me once you've completed the secondary task - which many of you will find vastly more entertaining, I'm sure.

[ He smiles, faintly. ]

Your objective is to touch or hit me with your weapon of choice. If you can do that, you win. And remember - you don't have to fight me. It's ideal if you do not.

You just need that weapon to make contact with me.

[ Over the next few days, Ekkehardt will be going about his business as usual. If you see him getting assaulted by various students wielding various weapons, he doesn't seem to mind at all.

In fact, he seems to be kind of enjoying it, in a weird way??
]

E. Wildcard

[ Did you come here to see Ekkehardt teach for once and not be a fusspot in the infirmary? Are you just curious about what a self-defense class for noncombatants entails? Literally anything else? Hit me I'll roll with it. ]

[He fell off the roof and he was fine. Three floors will be okay too. At least he'll be done with this class. He's completely disregarding the fact Peter was there to catch him last time. There's not enough time to think about those things when making snap decisions. Toki jumps, yet another very bad decision.]

[Maybe Ekkehardt should have been a little more clear on the actual purpose of the class. 'Self-defense' didn't really imply 'decision making'.

Toki certainly doesn't expect Ekkehardt to follow him out the window and slow his descent. They land without much incident. As Toki really has no good answer to that, nor an explanation for what he was thinking, he's going for distraction again.]

I'm so disappointed in you, Ekkehardt~! You didn't even keep the bat~! So, you see, I am completely capable of distracting enemies in ways they'll never see coming~!

[He's not responsible for anyone else's choices.]

No! Because it's not my fault you jumped out the window too, right!?

[He's had so little meaningful interaction with people before Daybreak, he doesn't really get it. Everyone is their own entity. Whatever he does with his own life has no bearing on others.]

[personal profile] yokeye 2019-03-24 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It's your fault for taking this job, then, isn't it!?

[He really, really wants to just run and avoid this entire topic. He can't be responsible for people like that. It's too much.]

And it's- it's on them for caring about me in the first place! No one should ever rely on me for making decisions! They can't! I don't want them to!

[He can't explain how he feels about this kind of thing. It's overwhelming and he'll never ever make a decision if he has to worry about what the consequences would be to someone else. This is going so badly; he's never showing up for any classes like this again, and may or may not be contemplating leaving during spring break and just not coming back.]

Everything! Nothing! Existence! I don't know! Nothing ever mattered and now it does and what if I start really caring about something and then it's just gone!? Like I close my eyes and everything changes again!? Or it wasn't real in the first place!? What if it's like you say and I get someone killed!? Nothing I do can matter that much! I can't have that responsibility! I just want to pretend to be happy and that everything's fine and I'm trying so hard to do that! Let me keep doing that!

[He immediately regrets saying any of that. He's running the second Ekkehardt lets go of his arm.]

[personal profile] yokeye 2019-03-24 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
[Yes, it does change. Though he didn't mean it quite literally. Maybe Ekkehardt doesn't notice; lots of people don't notice. The second part he doesn't understand. Act upon what? He doesn't ask, because Ekkehardt's already talking about previous incidents as some sort of evidence, but he's getting it wrong.]

That's because I stopped pretending.

[That's all the explanation Ekkehardt gets. A soon as he's free, Toki runs off to find some place where he doesn't have to think for a while.]
