When You Made Wishes: start! (player plot)

Imagine Wist's surprise when April rolled around and their plan for a great prank was foiled on account of all those students just...leaving??? Truly, they have become the April fool... It's what they wanted, of course -- for the pitiful humans to find freedom -- and sure there are some stragglers around, but...in the end, they decide to take the win and enjoy a short break of their own. Good thing, too, or they might have pulled out all their hair in frustration when Spring Break comes to an end and the swarm of students and faculty willingly return to their prison.

While settling back into the academy and resigning themselves to a routine, the people of Daybreak will be soothed by a gentle tune rising up from the forest. It isn't a song they've heard before, and yet, somehow...it's nostalgic, isn't it? The soft notes of the pan flute stir up something in their hearts, tugging at old memories and drawing forth a feeling of dissatisfaction and longing out from under them. Let the song lull them into taking a moment to withdraw from the hustle and bustle -- hey, turns out they sort of need it. Maybe they're coming down with a cold, or just some quick little bug...

The odd message from an iris account that doesn't exist isn't up for long before the spell kicks into the next phase. However they manifest and from when differs from person to person, but those affected will all have the bizarre experience of watching some ghost of themselves from their past be born from their soul's memory. Don't think there are those that can escape this fate just by returning at a later time, either -- Wist can keep up this panpipe nonsense all day, every day if they have to. If that what it takes to get their point across...

Good luck trying to comprehend whatever point that may be, because now Daybreak is the new home to a bunch of familiar-looking rugrats and has to contend with whatever complications they may bring along with them.

Well, of course! Except we weren't going to give them nailpolish remover or alcohol of any kind, because they're 9, so that left us with... toothpaste again for cleanup.

[ He sighs, very melodramatically. ]

9 years olds have the time of their lives, smearing toothpaste on furniture, as it turns out.

[Adelaide makes a sympathetic noise, before reaching out to pat his shoulder. It'll be okay, James.]

So they just made cleanup an even bigger mess, huh? Geez.

Hopefully they don't stick around for too much longer...

I sure hope so, though I wonder what'll actually happen to them then. I know they're just fragments of us, but they feel very real in every sense.

Well, if they're a part of us, maybe they'll just...come back to us? Seems like the easiest thing to happen.

So everything these kids do now will have never mattered...

[ That's just... really weird to think about. A little sad, considering how excited his younger self is about everything. ]

I mean, they'll still live on in us, yeah? It's like...a really weird way to keep in touch with your inner child.

My inner child feels incredibly solid and realistic. I thought the term was more meant to describe your feelings unfiltered by the rationality of age and not... well, little you, as you were at 9, memories and all.

[ He'd really have less difficulty with this whole concept if these children weren't so accurate. Some fey creature reflecting his current desires in a child-like form, he could take that, but this is just... himself, just again. And younger. ]

Usually, yeah, but magic makes things a little more literal!

[It's really strange and bizarre and unsettling, and it makes Adelaide think about the kind of childhood she had and how things would have ended up if they went differently, but...

It's not so bad, most of the time.]

It is kind of weird, the fact they're from the past, though.

Really brings back memories.

[ His little self remembers so many things vividly that James had already almost forgotten about because they're no longer of consequence in his presence. ]

And makes you learn a lot about the others as well.

[Because, you know. Childhood memories given physical form.]

But yeah, you're right about that. It's...kind of weird, seeing how people used to be. Some people are barely recognizable.

Really makes you wonder what happened to them...

[ It's kind of depressing seeing happy child versions of people who nowadays hardly ever crack a smile. ]

Presumably something involving Outlands creatures in most cases, given where we are, but still.

That's probably more right than not.

[She huffs, and it's almost, but not quite, a laugh.]

Or something just as terrible. But, you know, the fact they used to be so happy...there's no reason they won't be like that again.

[ And he's not judging her for it. It's actually kind of refreshing. ]

The academy should maybe invest some money into counselors to facilitate that process.

I don't see what's the point in always expecting the worst from something.

[Well. Most of the time, anyways.]

And that...wouldn't be a bad idea. Though any counselor they hire would probably have their work cut out for them.
