The snowfall has only intensified as Daybreak moves into the first day of Winter Term classes. A school-wide orientation will be held in the auditorium, followed by an open period where tours will be given to new students by student volunteers. After a noon lunch in the main hall, short introduction classes will be held where the syllabi will be distributed and professors can give a brief overview of what they’ll be covering over the term.

A. ORIENTATION ASSEMBLY

With a new school year comes a fresh address. The orientation assembly is one of the few times that the Headmistress and High Seer, Mila Duchene, speaks to the gathered faculty and students about their purpose and why they’ve been found and gathered here. About how Nightfall looms ever closer, and how together they will be the flames who light the coming darkness.

It is, in the manner of many orientation speeches, fairly long-winded. Those who have been here for more than a year have likely heard this speech before, though it’s slightly more urgent this time. Maybe it’s a good time to get to know the people on either side of you a little better while the Headmistress talks, because you’ll be here for a while. Or maybe you’ve planned ahead, and you have something to entertain you at orientation - much to the shared entertainment or dismay of others in your vicinity, perhaps.

Or you could actually be listening to the speech. It’s up to you.

B. SCHOOL TOUR

For students fresh to the academy, the sprawling nature and architecture of Daybeak Academy can be quite intimidating. Fortunately, helpful student volunteers have been tapped to help escort the new students around and give them a feel for campus. Student volunteers are typically chosen for both their experience on campus and helpful nature. While some scripts are provided, students are encouraged to ad-lib and put their own spin on campus and what they like about it. New students are, of course, encouraged to ask as many questions as they can to make sure they fully understand and familiarize themselves with the campus as quickly as possible.

C. SNACK STATION

During the first three days after the Holiday break, throughout the campus grounds are small stations manned by the kitchen staff and volunteers, the smell of hot chocolate, cider, and frying bread fills the air, stirring the appetite and promising warmth on this cold winter’s day.

Every booth has hot chocolate, some spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, others rich and creamy, but always with an option for marshmallows, peppermint bark or caramel drizzles - with non-alcoholic hot cider for those with an allergy to chocolate. For food options, naturally being France there are crepes of all types and beignets on offer, with jam- or custard-filled berliners, while those looking for a more savory fare will be treated to rissoles - a fried bread stuffed with minced meat or bechamel sauce and cod.

While the drinks are on tap and readily available, it may take a few moments to get the treats out, so might as well make conversation while a fresh batch is made.

You can't have classes all year!

[What a horrible notion. At least the tour is, sort of, close to over. Gongenzaka still didn't say if it was mandatory. The kid wasn't even listening.]

You're a bad tour guide, by the way. How hard is it to answer simple questions? Do you even know what you're doing?

Do you intend then, to stay here and have your vacation over the summer? [He replies calmly, crossing his arms.] I, the man Gongenzaka, am answering your questions fine! What is it that you feel I have not answered?

[It should be obvious from his context Toki!! His context!! Clearly it isn't a mandatory event, just an expected one!]

Well, yeah. Where else am I gonna go?

[He raises an eyebrow, because, really, where?]

You didn't tell me if the tour was mandatory. It's a simple yes or no question. So, yes or no?

....that, I would not know- it is something you would need to question the faculty, about.

[As it is.]

No. [He does not sound pleased about the fact that Toki is asking.] However...You are EXPECTED to have taken a tour, [He repeats- which is to say, it'll be very much on his head if he gets lost in this place and winds up late for things. And no that's not inevitable just stick with the tour!]

[He'd find some way to stay on campus over the breaks. There had to be other kids with nowhere else to go, too.]

I will certainly discuss that with the faculty~!

[Toki is confused when Gongenzaka answers a definite 'no' and then proceeds to try and negate that with 'expected'. But it was a definite 'no'.]

No. Okay. Have fun with the rest of the tour~!

[He waves and breaks away from the group. He intends to just go wander around for a while and talk to people.]

[You are not escaping that easily.

He immediately moves to head him off.] ....'Toki', [he rumbles, at the very least using the preferred nickname.]

Do you perhaps recall, what we spoke of at the banquet.

[If you're gonna dedicate yourself you better start now buddy.] I, the man Gongenzaka, already told you the tour was closer to being finished, than not..! To skip out is to fail to understand your surroundings at even a basic level..! [He protests.] You will have the remaining day entirely to yourself after!!

[It's not like this will take hours Toki!!]

[Uhhh. No. He's never going to ask Gongenzaka a question again.]

The banquet~! Yes! Look, we just have different ways of learning, Gongenzaka~! Listening to you go through the history of the buildings and pointing out things on maps just doesn't work for me. I need to touch things. I need to explore~! That's how I learn.

[Exploration for knowledge purposes. Gongenzaka hopefully couldn't argue with that.]

[He is now even Less amused.]

Toki.

All that I, the man Gongenzaka, am doing, is leading you through the surroundings, and making a note of what each building is, and is for, and what classes are held there.

[There is like, 5% history facts YOU'RE JUST MEAN]

[So, he hadn't been listening to anything Gongenzaka had said on the tour... and guessed wrong. Great.]

You know, you're neglecting the students who are actually interested in the tour by talking to me, right?

And you, yourself, are contributing to the neglect by doing this. Even if you leave, [He warns,] I, the man Gongenzaka, am yet responsible for where you are until this tour is over!

Therefore, I shall not simply turn a blind eye upon your actions to leave! [One would think the tour not being mandatory would absolve Gon of that responsibility. But maybe it's something like 'until the tour is over, it counts'.]

[If Toki cared about anyone being neglected on the tour, he would still be with the group. It's obviously not an issue for him.]

Wait, you're responsible? Such faith the academy places in its students! I'll just be over there.

[He indicates some building or other, it's vague.]

Now you can say you know where I am if anyone asks.

Toki....That is not how it works. [he replies.]

Why is it, that you cannot bear to complete this tour? You waste more time with an argument, than you would to simply complete it with the others!

[He could not stand this kid. Gongenzaka argued about everything with confusing sentences and double-talk and harping on the same things over and over. Toki's brain was going to explode if he had to listen to this any longer.]

I'LL TAKE THE REST OF THE TOUR, OKAY!?

MNH-

[Well. Congrats Toki you firmly shocked the guy. ~~And it's not double talk!!!~~

...But he doesn't say anything in response. Merely nods slowly, perhaps a little warily even, moving back to the tour. He waits for Toki to rejoin the group before continuing.

It'll probably be another half hour at most, if he doesn't ask any questions at least...but it's jarring, for him- given that Toki had started with seemingly genuine and excited questions about France and. Well.

Here they are.

It makes him wonder what is real in the other's words.]

[He's trying to listen to the rest of the tour, but he doesn't last long before he's following the group and thinking about things he doesn't want to think about. Toki's so close to asking Gongenzaka another inane question just to get his mind off it, but he knows it will just end badly.]

[The sad thing is he didn't mind the inane questions- he was a little confused and thrown off by what followed the question sure, but it wasn't until Toki started trying to leave the tour that he got upset.

Eventually they're just about at the end- the dormitories, covered quickly just with a passing through the main entry of both and pointing out the maps, the elevator, and so on. And so-]

Are there...any questions? [He asks- almost hopeful, in fact. Slowly, he finds himself looking toward Toki rather nervously.]

[He has no questions. He's heading to his dorm room, and hopefully not running into Gongenzaka again for at least a week.]

A...Auh. ....of course.

[CRUMMY MOOD INTENSIFIES.

He'll just watch him go, apparently.]
