The snowfall has only intensified as Daybreak moves into the first day of Winter Term classes. A school-wide orientation will be held in the auditorium, followed by an open period where tours will be given to new students by student volunteers. After a noon lunch in the main hall, short introduction classes will be held where the syllabi will be distributed and professors can give a brief overview of what they’ll be covering over the term.

A. ORIENTATION ASSEMBLY

With a new school year comes a fresh address. The orientation assembly is one of the few times that the Headmistress and High Seer, Mila Duchene, speaks to the gathered faculty and students about their purpose and why they’ve been found and gathered here. About how Nightfall looms ever closer, and how together they will be the flames who light the coming darkness.

It is, in the manner of many orientation speeches, fairly long-winded. Those who have been here for more than a year have likely heard this speech before, though it’s slightly more urgent this time. Maybe it’s a good time to get to know the people on either side of you a little better while the Headmistress talks, because you’ll be here for a while. Or maybe you’ve planned ahead, and you have something to entertain you at orientation - much to the shared entertainment or dismay of others in your vicinity, perhaps.

Or you could actually be listening to the speech. It’s up to you.

B. SCHOOL TOUR

For students fresh to the academy, the sprawling nature and architecture of Daybeak Academy can be quite intimidating. Fortunately, helpful student volunteers have been tapped to help escort the new students around and give them a feel for campus. Student volunteers are typically chosen for both their experience on campus and helpful nature. While some scripts are provided, students are encouraged to ad-lib and put their own spin on campus and what they like about it. New students are, of course, encouraged to ask as many questions as they can to make sure they fully understand and familiarize themselves with the campus as quickly as possible.

C. SNACK STATION

During the first three days after the Holiday break, throughout the campus grounds are small stations manned by the kitchen staff and volunteers, the smell of hot chocolate, cider, and frying bread fills the air, stirring the appetite and promising warmth on this cold winter’s day.

Every booth has hot chocolate, some spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, others rich and creamy, but always with an option for marshmallows, peppermint bark or caramel drizzles - with non-alcoholic hot cider for those with an allergy to chocolate. For food options, naturally being France there are crepes of all types and beignets on offer, with jam- or custard-filled berliners, while those looking for a more savory fare will be treated to rissoles - a fried bread stuffed with minced meat or bechamel sauce and cod.

While the drinks are on tap and readily available, it may take a few moments to get the treats out, so might as well make conversation while a fresh batch is made.

[Gunvolt was wandering about the time Nana took up a cup of hot chocolate, and noticed her sudden addition to her drink.]

...Were those banana pieces? In hot chocolate?

[He looks more confused than anything, not particularly judgemental. Just.... that's an entirely new one.]

Oh, GV. Of course! [Nana... winks. Like this is secret knowledge and she's sharing it.]

Bananas go with everything.

[He blinks, still looking confused.]

I mean, I've heard of chocolate covered bananas. And this might be a logical extension, but.... do they really go with everything?

[He's no gourmand by any stretch, but... he has... concerns?]

Well... maybe not everything. Hot sauce, a lot of savory dishes...

But practically anything that's sweet?

[She is not a reliable narrator here.]

So don't put bananas in those rissoles, is what I'm hearing. Good thing, because... well, that does sound kinda gross.

...I'll have to try banana in something sweet sometime, though. But I think I'll pass it in my hot chocolate this time. Already got mint in mine as it is.

[Mint and banana doesn't sound like it would mix...]

Definitely don't do that.

[Nana laughs a little, but she nods. Yeah, mint and banana... that's not two flavors she'd combine.]

No, I wouldn't try that. You can try it next time! I'd be happy to give you some when you want.

Think I'll give it a shot sometime, then. Thank you!

[What's the worst that could happen, after all?]

So, bananas aside, how've you been, Nana?

I've been pretty well. It's always nice starting a new term! New classes, new people to meet...

[She turns it back on him pretty quickly:]

What about you, GV?

...It's been adjustment, being away from QUILL. Not necessarily a bad one... I've met a lot of nice people here, and I'm happy about it, but...

[He hesitates a little, but decides that it'd be fine to air it out.]

Keep it quiet, but... I'm not crazy about my roommate. She's... difficult.

Ah... I can see that. I imagine that life at QUILL was different.

[She blinks, though. She's a little surprised to hear him admit it.

But... that could be a problem. One she's glad she doesn't have. But maybe it's something she can help with.]

Tell me more about it?

Her name's Maple.

[That probably says it all, if Nana's been around enough to hear about her... reputation.]

She's a seer... and I think she seems like a good one. But she finds every possible way to try to make a buck, and needle you, and she's just... I dunno. In two days she's tried to sell me her seer services seven times. She's just... irritating, I guess.

It's at least not the first time I've dealt with a bunkmate I've had trouble with. Maybe I just need to get used to her.

Oh my God.

[Oops, the kind loving senpai mask slipped.

Hold on a second, Nana has to mentally reach up and slip it back into place.]

Yeah, she's... um... very different! I met her once. She, ah, accused me of trying to flirt with her. But I think--maybe, stick with it, and... try to reach out a little, and... roll with the punches?

[The fact that her heretofore unshakable demeanor actually took some sort of hit, if even for a second, did tell him enough about Maple's reputation preceding her.]

That's... not very reassuring.

[At least he's honest, but he doesn't look too upset by that.]

But I'll try to make it work for now. As long as she doesn't mess with my stuff, I can put up with her, and it's not like she's done anything all that bad yet.

[Though he's beginning to think he might be looking for places to hang out when he's not sleeping...]

W-Well... yes. But sometimes there's difficult people, and... a lot of them do have some reason for it.

[Not that it makes it great.

She sighs, a little, before she looks down.]

But avoiding her so you're not overexposed seems wise.
