WINTER TERM OPENING CEREMONY AND CLASS START

WINTER TERM OPENING CEREMONY AND CLASS START

The snowfall has only intensified as Daybreak moves into the first day of Winter Term classes. A school-wide orientation will be held in the auditorium, followed by an open period where tours will be given to new students by student volunteers. After a noon lunch in the main hall, short introduction classes will be held where the syllabi will be distributed and professors can give a brief overview of what they’ll be covering over the term.

A. ORIENTATION ASSEMBLY

With a new school year comes a fresh address. The orientation assembly is one of the few times that the Headmistress and High Seer, Mila Duchene, speaks to the gathered faculty and students about their purpose and why they’ve been found and gathered here. About how Nightfall looms ever closer, and how together they will be the flames who light the coming darkness.

It is, in the manner of many orientation speeches, fairly long-winded. Those who have been here for more than a year have likely heard this speech before, though it’s slightly more urgent this time. Maybe it’s a good time to get to know the people on either side of you a little better while the Headmistress talks, because you’ll be here for a while. Or maybe you’ve planned ahead, and you have something to entertain you at orientation - much to the shared entertainment or dismay of others in your vicinity, perhaps.

Or you could actually be listening to the speech. It’s up to you.

B. SCHOOL TOUR

For students fresh to the academy, the sprawling nature and architecture of Daybeak Academy can be quite intimidating. Fortunately, helpful student volunteers have been tapped to help escort the new students around and give them a feel for campus. Student volunteers are typically chosen for both their experience on campus and helpful nature. While some scripts are provided, students are encouraged to ad-lib and put their own spin on campus and what they like about it. New students are, of course, encouraged to ask as many questions as they can to make sure they fully understand and familiarize themselves with the campus as quickly as possible.

C. SNACK STATION

During the first three days after the Holiday break, throughout the campus grounds are small stations manned by the kitchen staff and volunteers, the smell of hot chocolate, cider, and frying bread fills the air, stirring the appetite and promising warmth on this cold winter’s day.

Every booth has hot chocolate, some spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, others rich and creamy, but always with an option for marshmallows, peppermint bark or caramel drizzles - with non-alcoholic hot cider for those with an allergy to chocolate. For food options, naturally being France there are crepes of all types and beignets on offer, with jam- or custard-filled berliners, while those looking for a more savory fare will be treated to rissoles - a fried bread stuffed with minced meat or bechamel sauce and cod.

While the drinks are on tap and readily available, it may take a few moments to get the treats out, so might as well make conversation while a fresh batch is made.

He waves a hand. "Ah, he's just got a couple of screws loose, been through some hard times. It happens on the street. You gotta catch him at the right moment, usually when he's been sitting fireside with a drink for a while and starts calling you Valentin. But you know, he's great at cards and he knows every word to La Vie En Rose-- you just got to keep your things with you tight or he'll try to waltz with them."

He folds his arms and bobs his head, smiling. He can almost hear it now and he laughs at the vision of his guitar taken from his hands. Maybe he should pay the old man a visit some time. At the right moment.

"Of course, you're not going to do that because even if you aren't under the drinking age, you've still got classes and once he starts there's no leaving."

Honestly that sounds kind of nice. Finding an old dude, listening to his stories, not sleeping? That's a legit night to him. He'll have to keep an eye out when Spider-Man is swinging through Soleil on patrol.

"I could bring my homework with me?" he offers. "Listen to him and work at the same time. Y'know, multi-tasking."

"Not unless you're ready, at best, for him to dance away with your textbooks," He points out. But the thoughts an amusing one and, honestly, he's pleased to see Peter agree.

A lot of people could get real judgmental about this stuff. He's been scorned more than a few times for being homeless. What a shock it would be if they also knew him to be dead. But all those guys he's met on the street or in the outlands, they were people too.

"But if you can manage it like you say, you might as well bring your homework when you come to see me too." You've done it now Peter. "I can play while you work."

Admittedly, a homeless dude would probably have some trouble stealing from Peter when he's right there. Spider senses are a hell of a thing. But. It's a little silly to argue that particular point, so he won't.

Anyway, he brightens at that particular offer. Sorry homeless dude, he's sure you're cool? But listening to Héctor play is a way better deal. "Okay, let's do that," he says with a genuine smile. "Nightmares usually keep me up, so this'll be way better."

"Nightmares, huh? Ah, that's too bad. My--" He cuts himself off with a wince, then restarts. "...I heard music can help with that actually. Depending on what you listen to."

Though part of him kind of hopes his music doesn't put Peter to sleep. It's been a while since he played for anybody else.

He beams at Peter, glad they could arrange this, and furthermore, that he only has to feel a little guilty about keeping the kid awake.

"Alright, Peter, I'll you see you then. Stay out of trouble. Including the troubles dumpsters, got it?" He gives a light tap to Peter's shoulder with his knuckles to go with the teasing.

It’s a complement if he falls asleep, okay. Peter is still sleeping enough to get by, but with his nightmares... yeah he’s not getting enough. It’s been a while since he got eight uninterrupted hours.

Peter himself is delighted by the arrangement. Somehow, despite everything, he thinks Héctor is a pretty cool dude? And hanging out listening to music in the middle of the night is like right up his alley. Reminds him of being out on patrol, back when things weren’t quite so insane...

“Okay, cool,” he says, with a shy smile. “No promises, but I’ll try.”

He’s going to immediately cause trouble with webbing and hanging out at Lumière but. At least maybe it won’t be so bad???
