WINTER TERM OPENING CEREMONY AND CLASS START

WINTER TERM OPENING CEREMONY AND CLASS START
Log Comm | Network Comm | OOC Comm | Navigation

The snowfall has only intensified as Daybreak moves into the first day of Winter Term classes. A school-wide orientation will be held in the auditorium, followed by an open period where tours will be given to new students by student volunteers. After a noon lunch in the main hall, short introduction classes will be held where the syllabi will be distributed and professors can give a brief overview of what they’ll be covering over the term.

A. ORIENTATION ASSEMBLY

With a new school year comes a fresh address. The orientation assembly is one of the few times that the Headmistress and High Seer, Mila Duchene, speaks to the gathered faculty and students about their purpose and why they’ve been found and gathered here. About how Nightfall looms ever closer, and how together they will be the flames who light the coming darkness.

It is, in the manner of many orientation speeches, fairly long-winded. Those who have been here for more than a year have likely heard this speech before, though it’s slightly more urgent this time. Maybe it’s a good time to get to know the people on either side of you a little better while the Headmistress talks, because you’ll be here for a while. Or maybe you’ve planned ahead, and you have something to entertain you at orientation - much to the shared entertainment or dismay of others in your vicinity, perhaps.

Or you could actually be listening to the speech. It’s up to you.

B. SCHOOL TOUR

For students fresh to the academy, the sprawling nature and architecture of Daybeak Academy can be quite intimidating. Fortunately, helpful student volunteers have been tapped to help escort the new students around and give them a feel for campus. Student volunteers are typically chosen for both their experience on campus and helpful nature. While some scripts are provided, students are encouraged to ad-lib and put their own spin on campus and what they like about it. New students are, of course, encouraged to ask as many questions as they can to make sure they fully understand and familiarize themselves with the campus as quickly as possible.

C. SNACK STATION

During the first three days after the Holiday break, throughout the campus grounds are small stations manned by the kitchen staff and volunteers, the smell of hot chocolate, cider, and frying bread fills the air, stirring the appetite and promising warmth on this cold winter’s day.

Every booth has hot chocolate, some spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, others rich and creamy, but always with an option for marshmallows, peppermint bark or caramel drizzles - with non-alcoholic hot cider for those with an allergy to chocolate. For food options, naturally being France there are crepes of all types and beignets on offer, with jam- or custard-filled berliners, while those looking for a more savory fare will be treated to rissoles - a fried bread stuffed with minced meat or bechamel sauce and cod.

While the drinks are on tap and readily available, it may take a few moments to get the treats out, so might as well make conversation while a fresh batch is made.

Ky was heading towards the grounds, a flask in hand when from his perspective, Maya suddenly loomed into view - visibly starting as he catches and quickly screws the flask shut, tucking it under his half-cape, brushing his shoulder-length hair back.

"Ah, Miss... Mademoiselle," He started, before venturing in English, his accent sounds like a strange blend of French and German. "Can I help you with something?"

My studies him a moment, she could hear something this way and decided to investigate, it wasn't as... off putting as some of the other sounds on campus. She kept hearing some decidedly unfriendly noises from various people on campus and did her best to avoid them.

His sounds were quite soothing, if you softer medieval sounds. "Oh, no, just looking around. Am I interrupting something?" That was less to do with her powers and more to do with a teacher looking sketchy.

He would be dismayed if he realized he came off as sketchy. Ky shook his head. "Oh no, you just startled me, that is all." The man laughs sheepishly. "I'm Ky Alard de Kiske, I'm the medieval languages and elemental combat instructor." He gave a half-bow.

"I just didn't expect to see anyone in this part of the school before classes resume."

"I do that a lot." Maya's lost track of the number of people she's gotten the drop on over the years. Due to a thing she couldn't tell she was doing, and nobody believed could be done. "That explains that."

No, she's not going to explain what that means. She kept listening for more notes in the sound, more information. Try to hear what the chant is saying. Of course listening makes her seem distracted and zoned out, a few moments later she realizes she should answer. "I'm Maya Matlin. Still getting used to everything being, um, real."

His brows lifted, a curious expression crossing his face at the comment before she suddenly spoke again, a look of sympathy appearing.

"Ah, understandable - I suppose you are still get a handle what abilities you have, no?" Ky wondered if that was why she had seem to space off, though it's hard to say what it is that caused it. "I'm still relatively new here myself compare to my colleagues, so I am still adjusting to things."

"I'm used to what they do, not used to them being real." Maya finds something to lean. It's a thready line, to be used to the impossible but only labeled as impossible. That it's there, but you always thought it wasn't. A contradiction that Maya still hasn't lost.

"What did you mean by elemental combat?" If what she hears is real, then it would be best to catalog all she hears into what it attaches to. Noises outside of just the sound of a person, their magics, it might benefit her. To know sounds other than flames and demons.

"Ah - I can only imagine how it feels to know such things are real." When he came into his own, he was already keep in that kind of word - not to mention the general public was more willing to believe then.

"Magic," he answers plainly. "To be more exact, how the different elemental forces interact with each other and the surrounding environments." He pauses, as he notices a door was open, he peeks in to make sure no one was in there before closing it. "For example, my magic takes the form of lightning - and electricity, I have to be mindful if there is water or metal objects around."

"Like a huge weight off my shoulders." There's no emotion in the words, just a thought in her head she said aloud for the room.

She pauses again to listen after he's done talking, for any signs of the magic he's talking about. She's hearing some sounds in there she could see being 'lightning.' "Nothing I need to worry about then."

He didn't press on the reaction, he found for things like this, it's best to let people go at in their own way. "Well I admit it is a rather specialized class," Ky nods slightly, tilting his head slightly.

"I know it's not a subject everyone is into or would have aptitude for, but I hope you might consider my languages class Miss Matlin, you might be surprised how useful it ends up being." With that he segues. "Do you have a good feel for the Academy's layout yet?"

"Maybe... taking normal classes is good for keeping me, I dunno-" feeling normal? Maya's still getting more or less used to everything. She wants to anchor this off something that resembles normal. Ancient languages just don't really give her a lot to work with in terms of her other designs on her life. It could be fun, though. So she isn't ruling it out.

"There are a few landmarks I can use to orientate myself. Even if I wander into a part of campus I'm not familiar with I know where some things are." Maya is cheating and using her hearing to keep a sense of where she is in relation to everything underground.

"Good, it can be fairly confusing, I confess I sometimes miss my mark if I get distracted." His shoulders raised slightly under the half-cape. "At any rate, regardless whether you take my classes or not, my door is open for students if they want to drop in for whatever reason."

"I can't help. You probably can't hear my landmarks."

Maya considers, there's a pause again between his speaking and her reply, "It is nice that I'm not the only one out of my depth here."
