The snowfall has only intensified as Daybreak moves into the first day of Winter Term classes. A school-wide orientation will be held in the auditorium, followed by an open period where tours will be given to new students by student volunteers. After a noon lunch in the main hall, short introduction classes will be held where the syllabi will be distributed and professors can give a brief overview of what they’ll be covering over the term.

A. ORIENTATION ASSEMBLY

With a new school year comes a fresh address. The orientation assembly is one of the few times that the Headmistress and High Seer, Mila Duchene, speaks to the gathered faculty and students about their purpose and why they’ve been found and gathered here. About how Nightfall looms ever closer, and how together they will be the flames who light the coming darkness.

It is, in the manner of many orientation speeches, fairly long-winded. Those who have been here for more than a year have likely heard this speech before, though it’s slightly more urgent this time. Maybe it’s a good time to get to know the people on either side of you a little better while the Headmistress talks, because you’ll be here for a while. Or maybe you’ve planned ahead, and you have something to entertain you at orientation - much to the shared entertainment or dismay of others in your vicinity, perhaps.

Or you could actually be listening to the speech. It’s up to you.

B. SCHOOL TOUR

For students fresh to the academy, the sprawling nature and architecture of Daybeak Academy can be quite intimidating. Fortunately, helpful student volunteers have been tapped to help escort the new students around and give them a feel for campus. Student volunteers are typically chosen for both their experience on campus and helpful nature. While some scripts are provided, students are encouraged to ad-lib and put their own spin on campus and what they like about it. New students are, of course, encouraged to ask as many questions as they can to make sure they fully understand and familiarize themselves with the campus as quickly as possible.

C. SNACK STATION

During the first three days after the Holiday break, throughout the campus grounds are small stations manned by the kitchen staff and volunteers, the smell of hot chocolate, cider, and frying bread fills the air, stirring the appetite and promising warmth on this cold winter’s day.

Every booth has hot chocolate, some spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, others rich and creamy, but always with an option for marshmallows, peppermint bark or caramel drizzles - with non-alcoholic hot cider for those with an allergy to chocolate. For food options, naturally being France there are crepes of all types and beignets on offer, with jam- or custard-filled berliners, while those looking for a more savory fare will be treated to rissoles - a fried bread stuffed with minced meat or bechamel sauce and cod.

While the drinks are on tap and readily available, it may take a few moments to get the treats out, so might as well make conversation while a fresh batch is made.

Or I got this a while ago. [Technically it's his second cup.

He leans off the statue to approach Gongenzaka with a slow, casual pace.] Are you in a bad mood?

...Ah. [Yes that makes sense.]

Auh! A bad mood? [He repeats- which, naturally, likely only confirms the answer is yes. He grimaces- a weird expression on a bear, and in the end just ends up going back to his cup of cocoa.] I...

...I, the man Gongenzaka, cannot be sure. ...I feel, perhaps I may have caused another distress and yet...

[He stares at the cup, ears drooping.] ...It feels, even for what I, the man Gongenzaka know of them now...as if I am somehow never speaking to the same person...

[He's only spoken to him twice- and yet, the sheer roller coaster both conversations took was enough to make it confusing.]

[Yuya stops next to Gongenzaka, close at his side as he looks up at him.] You think you upset them with a misunderstanding?

[That's a sensitive issue for Gongenzaka, he knows.]

...Certainly, it must have been such a thing, [He mutters, brows furrowed.] But...more than that, they spoke as though they had no ambition, nor belief in themselves... ...and then when I, the man Gongenzaka, insisted it would be better to try anyway they...acted as though they truly agreed! With cheer, and eagerness, and...

....it felt...false, [He finishes.] ...I, the man Gongenzaka...thought perhaps in the tour I was to give, that they were indeed a little more excited but...

...they only wished to leave the tour. ...and I, the man Gongenzaka, would not let them.

[He doesn't go on just yet- he's not typically the sort to spill out his depressed moods as it is, and Yuuya no doubt realizes that himself. But quietly, and slowly, he takes a sip from his cocoa and continues to stare at it.]

...

... Well, you can't really make someone be or do what they don't want to. [Yuya shifts his mug and pats Gon's arm in assurance.] Even if it's something the school asked you to do.

[Yuya knows, being exactly that kind of problem child.]

I, the man Gongenzaka, had simply told them that I would still be responsible if they were to be harmed..! I had said, 'if something occurs, I am yet liable'!

And... [....] ...They said nothing more, and simply ran when the tour was complete... [Sure he can't make someone be or do something, but at least in this case it feels pretty horrible.]

...They would seem excited for one matter...and then suddenly so distressed, or silent...

[He doesn't like being this confused about something. It's how he is- he likes certainties, or at least being able to find his way to something certain. He can't bring himself to turn to Yuuya at the moment. He just drinks more from the cocoa mug, quiet.]

Uh... what do you think was going to happen to them on campus? [It seems like Gon is being a little fatalistic about his tour. It's not that serious.

Did he just terrify the newbie into thinking this place was dangerous? Oh no.]

I cannot tell..!! [He protests, snapping his head up.] But even simple matters, such as tripping down a stairwell, or perhaps wandering into a training location, could happen, could they not..!?

[He definitely didn't, but hey.] As it is, it is as though they felt such liability was even more reason to leave the tour..!!

It sounds like they didn't care about the tour to begin with. And those things wouldn't be your fault if they happened later anyway? You're not the RA or something.

[He was glad to hear Gon was doing something for the school, being a positive presence and all. But... maybe his expectations should have been set q little better.]

Then why would he act as if it mattered until that point..!?

[Because People Lie, Gon.

Not that this is obviously the issue in the first place. Considering he's getting more distressed now, well...] Even if I am not, I, the man Gongenzaka, gave my word that I would guide certain new students, and be responsible for them for that time!! It would be my responsibility!!

[Or at least he feels it would, and That's Enough for him to Panic.]

[Yuya lifts his hand, trying to ease him.] And nothing happened in the end, right? For your first time running a tour, you did okay!

[He pats Gon's arm, smoothing his hands over the sleeve to try and encourage him to calm down before he works himself up in hypothetical situations that never happened.]

[There may have been a bear-whine, but he's pretending he didn't make that sound. He just fidgets with the cocoa cup, and tries to agree with what Yuuya is saying.] A...Auuh.

...

[It is about then that he seems to crumble his head against his shoulders, as if tasting something unpleasant-]

...I, the man Gongenzaka....have just now realized which dormitory he left for, after the tour.

[he has to face him again....

(Not to say he would have avoided him, of course, never deliberately, but look he really isn't looking forward to this!)]

They're big dormitories. [The real problem is when they realize he's Yuya's roommate.]

You know this really isn't the end of the world.

....no. ...It is not... [Being caught in one of these moods is an especially shameful experience on Gongenzaka's part, at least in his own opinion. It's a bit childish, he thinks. Especially since as far as he can tell he didn't do anything wrong. (He can't say the same for Toki, mind, but that's beside the point)

His ears are still drooping.] ..hnnnn.... [He can't help but think 'they're big dormitories' just guarantees he'll see that guy real soon Yuuya.] ...Perhaps, a change in subject matter, lest I, the man Gongenzaka, continue to shamefully dwell upon what need not be dwelled upon...

[Ok, Gon,]

[So paranoid, Gon. Yuya lets out a breath and shakes his head.]

All right. What do you want to talk about?

Mnhhh...

[Aw man those are the worst parts of these talks HE HATES BEING THE REASON FOR THESE TALKS] ...Do you perhaps...have new classes, for this quarter?

A couple. There's natural science and lycanthropy.

[Now why does Yuya need to take a lycanthropy class (he doesn't).]

Oh! The introductory class? [Gongenzaka is of course of the mind that another perspective never hurts, and absolutely took that class.] It is a good one! You will certainly enjoy it!

[Yuya just wants an easy class he can blow off, his intentions are not so noble.] Did you learn anything you didn't already know?

[GOHAN WILL NOT LET YOU OFF SO EASY.]

Auh, I did! The class is useful when it comes to delving into the technical aspects of the curse...but as well, we covered a great deal of their place in the world at large- considering my own experience with the dojo, it was quite enlightening!

So if I need any help, I'll come find you. [That's decided. He's just not expecting to need it much, yet.]

Auhh...but you know what sort of help you will get, I hope...

[You will never copy his homework, never ever.]

I've only known you for how long? [He knows how to get around you big guy.

Sometimes at the cost if his dignity but what's a little desperate whining for a C.]

....Long enough. [He pointedly raises his brows.] ...I, the man Gongenzaka, will be very careful in what answers I give to you, Yuuya...

But you'll help me. Thanks, Gongenzaka! [Yuya grins and nudges him with his elbow cheekily.]
