WINTER TERM OPENING CEREMONY AND CLASS START

The snowfall has only intensified as Daybreak moves into the first day of Winter Term classes. A school-wide orientation will be held in the auditorium, followed by an open period where tours will be given to new students by student volunteers. After a noon lunch in the main hall, short introduction classes will be held where the syllabi will be distributed and professors can give a brief overview of what they’ll be covering over the term.

A. ORIENTATION ASSEMBLY

With a new school year comes a fresh address. The orientation assembly is one of the few times that the Headmistress and High Seer, Mila Duchene, speaks to the gathered faculty and students about their purpose and why they’ve been found and gathered here. About how Nightfall looms ever closer, and how together they will be the flames who light the coming darkness.

It is, in the manner of many orientation speeches, fairly long-winded. Those who have been here for more than a year have likely heard this speech before, though it’s slightly more urgent this time. Maybe it’s a good time to get to know the people on either side of you a little better while the Headmistress talks, because you’ll be here for a while. Or maybe you’ve planned ahead, and you have something to entertain you at orientation - much to the shared entertainment or dismay of others in your vicinity, perhaps.

Or you could actually be listening to the speech. It’s up to you.


B. SCHOOL TOUR

For students fresh to the academy, the sprawling nature and architecture of Daybeak Academy can be quite intimidating. Fortunately, helpful student volunteers have been tapped to help escort the new students around and give them a feel for campus. Student volunteers are typically chosen for both their experience on campus and helpful nature. While some scripts are provided, students are encouraged to ad-lib and put their own spin on campus and what they like about it. New students are, of course, encouraged to ask as many questions as they can to make sure they fully understand and familiarize themselves with the campus as quickly as possible.

C. SNACK STATION

During the first three days after the Holiday break, throughout the campus grounds are small stations manned by the kitchen staff and volunteers, the smell of hot chocolate, cider, and frying bread fills the air, stirring the appetite and promising warmth on this cold winter’s day.

Every booth has hot chocolate, some spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, others rich and creamy, but always with an option for marshmallows, peppermint bark or caramel drizzles - with non-alcoholic hot cider for those with an allergy to chocolate. For food options, naturally being France there are crepes of all types and beignets on offer, with jam- or custard-filled berliners, while those looking for a more savory fare will be treated to rissoles - a fried bread stuffed with minced meat or bechamel sauce and cod.

While the drinks are on tap and readily available, it may take a few moments to get the treats out, so might as well make conversation while a fresh batch is made.

[ Aya comes to the door, wearing a thin tank top and yoga pants, a small white towel around her neck. She's covered in a thin sheen of sweat. Someone was working out. She looks down at the boy, eyebrows furrowed. Is he going to say anything? ]

Uh...hi?

He lowers his hand once the door opens, his other hand squeezing a black ballet slipper.

"Ah, I am sorry for interrupting you." Fakir started, eyelids closing as he exhales - this is completely and utterly ridiculous. "One of the girls here has taken one of my shoes and is refusing to give it back without making me buy it."

It's fine, I'm just -

Took your shoe? [ How old are these guys supposed to be again? ] What? Why?

[schwanenritter]

I might've dropped it, but she's not giving it back, and I rather not pay for something that is already mine.

[He rubs his temple]

[maplesight]

[ Just gonna wave from over in the common room, where she is still set up with a table and a shoe on the table and a sign proclaiming its cost.

She knows they're talking about her, so I mean, hey? ]

[eyefortrouble]

[ Aya leans out the door, giving Maple that good side eye. ] Come with me. [ And she walks over. ]

So what's your game here?

[maplesight]

I'm a simple girl trying to make a living in this harsh, harsh world. I sell shoes that I find in hallways because finders keepers.

[schwanenritter]

That's not how it works.

[He pinches his nose]

[eyefortrouble]

[ Aya looks at Fakir, eyebrow raised. ] My thoughts exactly. Give him back his shoe.

[maplesight]

Are you sure you want me to do that?

[ She does grab the shoe, as if... considering following orders. ]

[eyefortrouble]

[ Aya sighs in frustration. ]

Look, whatever you did to the thing, whatever enchantment or whatever, whether you hexed it or filled it with ketchup, just undo that and give it back. This isn't rocket science.

[maplesight]

[ AS SHE SAYS THAT, the shoe is already... turning into crystal. ]

Oh, oops. Too late. [ She drops it in Fakir's hands. Or, if he doesn't offer them, just literally onto the floor in front of him. ]

[eyefortrouble]

[ Aya sighs, shaking her head. ] Unless you can undo that, you owe this kid a new pair of shoes. Hope you've got the money already, because they're kind of expensive.

[maplesight]

I'm so very sorry, I don't have good control of my powers. [ This is said, so very insincere. ] But you know I'm a poor girl with no money, or why else would I be selling a shoe I found on the ground? I'm a stone you can't squeeze from, I'm afraid.

[schwanenritter]

[He is, quietly shaking as he grabs the shoe, eyes narrowing at Maple]

Schmarrn.

[Even without knowing a lick of german, the sentiment behind that word is loud and clear: He does not believe her]

[ Aya looks over at Fakir, grimacing. What exactly is this kid getting out of this? ]

Well if that's the case, I'll talk to the kitchen staff and see if you can't earn that money.

[maplesight]

You're going to force me to work all because of something outside of my control? To take away from my education?

The school's rich, I'm sure they'll cover for it.

In the mean time, it's been really great, but the fire alarm's about to ring, and I'd rather get outside before the rush. [ WHEN DID SHE PACK UP HER TABLE?

But Maple is ready to ditch. ]

[eyefortrouble]

[ Aya tilts her head to the side. ] I never said you'd have to miss any classes.

[ Aya scoffs. Here we go. She keeps pace with Maple, crossing her arms. ] You have to take responsibility for your actions, accidental or otherwise.

[maplesight]

Oh, hey! You're still following me.

Don't you have to take care of that fire alarm?

[ "What fire alarm" would be a very good response, except as she says this, the fire alarm begins to go off.

FUTURE VISION. ]

Yeah, I am. [ Aya motions for Fakir to follow along too. ]

Hey, you don't - hey! I'm talking to you! [ Aya calls out after Maple, her voice somehow coming out over the fire alarm. She hasn't had to use that voice since being on the beat in NYC. ] You don't just leave in the middle of a conversation. Now we both know there's no fire, so you stay with me until we're all out in the courtyard and we'll continue this at that time.

[maplesight]

I really don't wanna tell you how to do your job, but you really should be going to check room 205 before saying there's no fire.

[ And then! She keeps walking.

Choice time! Room 205, or Maple? ]

[eyefortrouble]

I told you to come with me. [ Aya is not happy. What's this kid's problem? ] So come with me. [ Aya isn't going to make a grab for Maple's arm or anything because, in the end, she is just a kid. ]
