The sun has risen on a new year - a year closer to Daybreak’s ultimate confrontation, but a new year all the same. Instead of the customary welcome assembly and speech for students in January, the administration has decided to celebrate the students’ achievements of thwarting two Heralds, and thus ensuring that the sun can continue to rise at all.

Soleil’s local amusement park, the Radiant Carnival, has been reserved for the Academy’s use on January 10th - which means free, unlimited reign of the park’s features and amenities, often with some further magical twists.

A. Welcoming Feast
Those who have attended the Academy before will by now be familiar with the kind of lavish spread Daybreak puts on for their start-of-year banquet, and the fare is as sumptuous as usual. The presentation comes with a twist, however - given that the party is hosted in the amusement park, the food has been laid out as an extensive buffet that students and staff can visit throughout the day, changing to new selections at certain hours to match the time of day.

The usual selection of drinks - both nonalcoholic and not - has also been made available through a combination of serving staff (for alcohol) and enchanted self-serve machinery (for anything else), allowing the possibly-inadvisable decision of mixing as many drinks as you can possibly get your hands on.

B. Amusement Park
For those who haven’t been to the Radiant Carnival before, it’s a colourful and magical sight - due to support from the Academy and the profit it turns from being one of the few places where the veil is more loosely enforced, it’s perpetually a bright spot, even in the winter landscape. Offering everything from the high-octane thrills of rollercoasters and drop towers to more sedate attractions like riverboat rides and merry-go-rounds, there’s no end to the entertainment that the Carnival provides - if an amusement park ride is reasonably common, the Carnival is sure to have it.

If amusement park rides aren’t to your tastes, there are also alleys and corners where people can gather for more traditional carnival games or - for those who prefer more technological pursuits, an arcade with everything from crane games and photobooths to high-tech game cabinets both enchanted and not. For those who want something more quiet, there’s space to sit and admire frozen water features, peaceful winter gardens, and even a castle to explore made from ice.

There’s bound to be something for everyone at the Radiant Carnival - or, at least, it aims to reach that standard.

C. Fireworks Show
As the day draws to a close and the sun sets, fireworks begin to burst in intricate patterns and vibrant colours in the darkening sky. While seating and rugs have been set up for convenience in the best places to watch the show from, those who are more daring might very well be able to secure a chance to set off some of these special fireworks themselves.

Or you can just bring your own and fire them off from somewhere else within the park, if you find the Academy’s selection lacking - though the administration will likely frown on it, if you’re caught.

D. Wildcard

The Radiant Carnival is open and free, at least for the day, to all of Daybreak’s attendees. Why not take advantage of it?

[ In any other place, Hornet would be one of the first to stand out. As it is, though, a girl in red with horns probably barely warrants a glance.

What may warrant a glance, though, is her choice in food. Not only is it mostly meat, and a sizeable amount at that, but it all seems to be on the pinker, rawer side when she can get it.

There are vegetables, too, but mostly salad greens - nothing cooked. Once she's finished taking samples of apparently every type of meat dish there, she retires to somewhere she can sit in comfort and starts eating like it's going to be taken away from her at any moment, with startling efficiency.

Old habits die hard. ]

[ Hornet wanders the park, taking in the sights and sounds. Despite her confident stride, she doesn't seem to have any particular goal in mind; she's never seen most of these constructions before, and is attempting to discern their purpose.

You may catch her reading one of the many signs or pamphlets describing the attractions around the park. ]

This machine throws you around at speed...and this is for entertainment? [ She sounds cautiously fascinated. ] Truly, humans have strange tastes...

[ She appears to be in of two minds as to whether to try it herself, though. Help her out? ]

[ You may find Hornet trying her skill at the carnival games or the arcade, or just perched on statues or buildings around the park, among other things. Do whatever you like! ]

Humans like to go fast.

[Zagreus was just kind of there. Hornet probably heard him coming because she's like that, but to anyone else it would have been a surprise.]

[ She's become more accustomed to her cousin's tendency to seemingly just appear. ]

It seems so...

Have you any experience with such things? [ Has Zagreus gone on one, she means. ] I can't imagine there were such constructions down below, but I was young when I saw those lands last.

To tell the truth, no I actually haven't.

[He put his hands on his hips and stared up at the roller coaster.]

[ Well, it looks like a suitable challenge. ]

Yes. [ She's just gonna go line up without a backwards glance, if Zagreus wants to follow that's his business.

Once they're there, she lingers over the carts, eyeing them dubiously. She's interested in them, and she can't tell whether that's all her or it's the heritage she doesn't want to talk about coming into play.

From the outside it just looks like she's reluctant to get in, though. ]

Well I'LL get in, if it makes you feel better.

[There was the slightest edge of teasing to his voice, as he misinterpreted Hornet's pause. But he had been watching other people get whipped around while they were in line. He was pretty sure that even his semidivine body would get pretty badly mangled if this contraption fell apart while he was riding it. So it was with a hint of trepidation as he climbed into the car.]

[ She doesn't miss that fraction of hesitation when he climbs in, either. She simply shakes her head and climbs in beside him, following the instructions to lock themselves both in safely. No point disobeying such things when it's for safety. ]

What an odd machine. [ She resists the urge to run her hands over the metal, wanting to see what it's made of, how it fits together. ] It's as if someone cut the ceiling off a tram, and put the rails on the bottom instead of the top.

I've never seen anything like it, to be honest.

[He looked around as the car was towed up to the top of the first hill.]

Not in the underworld, anyways. Everything up here is strange and new.

Nor have I. Harnessing this sort of technology for the purposes of entertainment isn't something Hallownest ever conceived of. Even to ride such a thing was considered a privilege.

[ Even as the cars pick up speed, Hornet finds it more of an interesting diversion than anything else. She certainly likes the wind blowing rapidly past, at least. ]

But the people here have made much of themselves and their civilisations through mechanical aid and effort. They seem obsessed with it.

[ Oh, a loop is coming up. Interesting. She leans forward. ]

I don't know how you can think about that kind of thing while we-

[Whups he lost his train of thought as they went upside down. Zagreus, too caught up in the ride, didn't really have anything else to say until they came to the end. He did whoop and scream along with the rest of the mortals, but it was hard to tell if he was enjoying himself.]

[ Hornet sits stoically as ever through the ride, the wind making a mess of her hair as they rocket through several loops, bends and twist. She leans forward or back occasionally, minute adjustments, but nothing more than that.

Eventually, they come to a stop. Hornet fusses with her hair, putting it back in place. ]

Was it to your liking? [ She sounds vaguely curious, for once. Slightly out of breath, too - it was fast, no doubt about that. ]

Less intense then fighting that damn hydra.

...More fun, though.

[Gunvolt did manage to catch Hornet as she was reading one of the signs, looking at one of the roller coasters.]

Oh yeah, roller coasters are actually pretty fun. The g-forces generated on some of the turns can be pretty exciting, and some of them make it feel like you're out of control. But they're actually safe.

If you don't get motion sickness, you should give it a try.

G-forces. I see. [ She doesn't actually see, because she doesn't know what g-forces are, but she's making a mental note to look it up. ]

I could likely react quickly enough to extract myself from any danger regardless... [ Her voice is contemplative. ] A strange machine.

What would you recommend, then? [ She might be stubborn and aloof, but even she understands when someone knows more than her. ]
