The sun has risen on a new year - a year closer to Daybreak’s ultimate confrontation, but a new year all the same. Instead of the customary welcome assembly and speech for students in January, the administration has decided to celebrate the students’ achievements of thwarting two Heralds, and thus ensuring that the sun can continue to rise at all.

Soleil’s local amusement park, the Radiant Carnival, has been reserved for the Academy’s use on January 10th - which means free, unlimited reign of the park’s features and amenities, often with some further magical twists.

A. Welcoming Feast
Those who have attended the Academy before will by now be familiar with the kind of lavish spread Daybreak puts on for their start-of-year banquet, and the fare is as sumptuous as usual. The presentation comes with a twist, however - given that the party is hosted in the amusement park, the food has been laid out as an extensive buffet that students and staff can visit throughout the day, changing to new selections at certain hours to match the time of day.

The usual selection of drinks - both nonalcoholic and not - has also been made available through a combination of serving staff (for alcohol) and enchanted self-serve machinery (for anything else), allowing the possibly-inadvisable decision of mixing as many drinks as you can possibly get your hands on.

B. Amusement Park
For those who haven’t been to the Radiant Carnival before, it’s a colourful and magical sight - due to support from the Academy and the profit it turns from being one of the few places where the veil is more loosely enforced, it’s perpetually a bright spot, even in the winter landscape. Offering everything from the high-octane thrills of rollercoasters and drop towers to more sedate attractions like riverboat rides and merry-go-rounds, there’s no end to the entertainment that the Carnival provides - if an amusement park ride is reasonably common, the Carnival is sure to have it.

If amusement park rides aren’t to your tastes, there are also alleys and corners where people can gather for more traditional carnival games or - for those who prefer more technological pursuits, an arcade with everything from crane games and photobooths to high-tech game cabinets both enchanted and not. For those who want something more quiet, there’s space to sit and admire frozen water features, peaceful winter gardens, and even a castle to explore made from ice.

There’s bound to be something for everyone at the Radiant Carnival - or, at least, it aims to reach that standard.

C. Fireworks Show
As the day draws to a close and the sun sets, fireworks begin to burst in intricate patterns and vibrant colours in the darkening sky. While seating and rugs have been set up for convenience in the best places to watch the show from, those who are more daring might very well be able to secure a chance to set off some of these special fireworks themselves.

Or you can just bring your own and fire them off from somewhere else within the park, if you find the Academy’s selection lacking - though the administration will likely frown on it, if you’re caught.

D. Wildcard

The Radiant Carnival is open and free, at least for the day, to all of Daybreak’s attendees. Why not take advantage of it?

[ Leo can, throughout the majority of the feast, be found with mixed up drinks of basically any color - even... brown? black?

He doesn't seem to dislike a single creation, either, and is chugging away whenever he's not absolutely tearing through the food. Which... isn't quite as frequent as him sitting and working on various devices and trinkets. The only time he can be seen sitting in one place for longer than maybe ten minutes, he's working on what looks like... some kind of mechanical creature - a... um... hamster, from the looks of it! Hm.

The creature is still very much not in the functional stages, but it does occasionally make a robotic squeaking sound.

Every now and then, he'll remember he has food, absently hold a flaming hand over it for a few minutes, and then go back to eating it. ]

hacking the system

[ Oh heck yeah...

A certain demigod is all about fun and games, and it looks like this place has a ton of those. He's brightening up more than his flaming hand and moving from carnival game to carnival game as though he's never seen one up close and personal before. Which... he hasn't (but leeeeeet's not think about that right now).

Though, the fun thing about being all about machinery and being able to sense when things aren't working just right? Well... Needless to say, Leo's humming and possibly trying to get closer looks at some of them, the embodiment of Judgement for a few of them. ]

Yeah, sure, and I'm Archimedes himself.

[ He's talking at one of the crane games. Feel free to question what he's going on about or judge that he's talking to a machine.

Later on, he can be seen at the arcade games, though he spends more time studying how they're built than actually playing a few of them. Or muttering something as he lightly pats the side of one. ]

Ah... this one needs a little tweaking.

putting the fire in fireworks

[ OKAY, BUT...

... Yeah, he might have stolen a few things before sneaking away to build his own fireworks? He doesn't seem remotely apologetic about it either. Nevermind that some of the messages in the bigger fireworks by him say... random or questionable things (i.e. random vulgar slang or various fire puns).

Some random people will get targeted by some customized "fireworks" which are basically just bright light and... glitter. No loud noise, no actual heat - just... sparkly lights. Fun!

Other random people might get targeted by some that make a soft noise, but he won't be hitting people who are obviously lost in thought, sleeping, or anything like that - he doesn't want to die if he can help it. Sure, he's fast, but like... some people around here are super powerful? ]

[Quite frankly, Lia's fascinated just watching Leo do his thing. She watches him study a machine for some rhythm game, sipping at a soda.]

[ Oh, hey, it's the cutie.

Leo flashes her a grin and very gently pats the machine. ]

Uhh... easiest way to put it [ no offense to her - just she doesn't seem to know machine speak ] is the timing seems a little off. I think it's just a loose wire. Easy fix.

[ So it's just the simple matter of making sure he won't get thrown out for trying to do something about it. ]

[She can follow up to a point, but she really does appreciate the use of layman's terms there.]

Well, it's a good thing you picked up on it. Since. Yeah. Timing, rhythm games. Y'know.

[ He learned his lesson from the last time he tried spelling things out to a person, and all they did was Stare Blankly. ]

Right! I'm about ninety-nine-point-nine percent sure it'll be a matter of taking care of a little wiring, but...

[ Flashing her a grin. He's... half-kidding - ehhh... one-fifth kidding?

[ He absolutely brightens at that, grinning from ear to ear. ]

[A very pale girl with white hair and a scar over her left eye stops next to him, noticing his project.]

That's interesting... Is that made with Runework or purely mechanical?

[ He blinks up at the voice - ah... she's super cute... - and seems to not realize, for maybe a few seconds, that he was asked a question.

Though, right after that, he's grinning down at his friend-in-the-making. ]

Interesting, huh? [ hint of something almost amused in his tone ] Definitely no runes involved here - this is pure wires and metal, baby! My personal specialty.

[ That "baby" is very clearly there for the emphasis, judging by his tone. ]

Anyway, I'm Leo - Leo Valdez.

Weiss Schnee, and I'm certainly impressed. I'm a rune specialist, so I'm wondering what the two of us could create if we collaborated. Magic and machinery united for a common goal!

[ Rex isn't actually the target of one of the noise-making fireworks.

That doesn't stop him from snatching one out of the air, his hand wrapped in a blue gauntlet that appears to be made of a dark gemstone. In his grip, it stops fizzing instantly. He examines it for a moment, sniffs in thought and flexes the fingers of his other hand.

Which sets it off again, though this time on a reverse course, so Rex can follow it back to whoever fired it. ]

[ Welp . . . Leo's definitely not far from it - maybe ten feet, at most.

So, when he spots the guy who apparently sent one back, he'll be immediately distracted. If the firework is still headed his way, he won't even try to stop it from hitting him.

And there'll definitely be some fun noise with that - that one has a beat to it that sounds suspiciously like something from a movie about a Battle of the Stars, but unimportant details. ]

[ Rex does indeed let the firework do what it's supposed to do. After all, if this is some kind of weird attack, blowing Leo up would be completely justified. If it's a prank, then Leo has no right to complain that he got what he was dishing out.

And besides, Rex is mostly just curious to see what happens. ]

*Maya's sticking to the carnival games because she's a little more at peace here, she can take her time to aim and play the game as it's meant to be played. And she doesn't feel like she's bringing anyone down the way she does on roller coasters. But it also means she can hear when people's powers are up and about.*

*And Maya notoriously needs to know things. So when she finds someone talking to a crane game she just has to speak up. Which is the first sound she makes getting near.*

Who is Archimedes?

*It might fill the air while she listens to his sounds, tries to piece together what he's about.*

[ He immediately brightens at that question, turning to look at her like she just asked a question about one of his all-time favorite topics . . . which, spoiler: she seriously might have. ]

Only one of the greatest people to have ever existed? He's not only the one behind more inventions than I could count - he was an engineer, astronomer, scientist...

[ There's a slight grin - something that possibly gives the impression of a troublemaker, but there's really only a harmless air here. Something maybe a little awkward and lonely, but basically... it's like he's doing his best to hide that. ]

And maybe one of the people I look up to.

*Enjoy more confusion. Maya doesn't really get how someone could be so enamored by an engineer. Which is proof she's not seeing herself, as she does that with every musician of any quality. Still, she wants a little more time to get a feel for the sound of his being. It- isn't quite matching his actions.*

But you only maybe look up to him?

If you think he's all that, shouldn't you definitely look up to him?

[ Welp, called right the heck out . . .

He just laughs it off, though, in spite of the hint of something awkward there. ]

I was mostly joking - not about the looking up to him part, but about the whole 'maybe' bit? Anyway, the point is he's awesome. Brilliant mind, creator of amazing things, et cetera!

[ Hornet is finely tuned to respond to sudden movements with a surprising amount of force. That firework doesn't even get to explode properly before she's pinned it to the ground with her needle, effectively cutting it in half.

The expression on her face might be classified as 'extremely mild embarrassment' at overreacting to something so harmless, but it's hard to tell. ]

What is this supposed to be for... [ She peers into the darkness, searching it for any sign of an origin for this mysterious force. ]

[ Oh no...

He can't help laughing at the definite extreme reaction, but it's nothing malicious or mean really. And it fades as he walks over. He lets out a sigh as he crouches next to the utterly defeated 'firework' and reaches up to lightly pat Hornet. ]

Well, that one, in particular, was supposed to play a catchy tune after "exploding" near a person... but now I think it's spare parts at best. R-I-P, little Valdetune Mach I.

[ Just... patting his own chest now like he's actually, seriously taking a moment to grieve. He might actually be serious - it's a little hard to tell sometimes, with him. ]

[ It's definitely an extreme reaction and she isn't going to pretend otherwise, even if it was unwarranted for such a harmless thing.

She doesn't exactly twitch away from being patted on the shoulder, but Leo can probably feel that she's tensed, like she's ready to burst into motion at any time. More than that, through the material of the cloak (well made from silk, or something like silk, but travel-worn), he'll be able to tell that beneath the cloth is something harder than flesh. ]

A firework that plays a song...an unusual choice. [ She carefully extracts the needle, trying not to do more damage than she's done already, and crouches next to him. ] Do the mechanisms run independently, or are they given life by the object's movement?

[ Her terminology might be a bit archaic, but she seems to understand the principles, at least. ]

It was the flaming hands that caught Zagreus' attention. He tended to go barefoot most of the time because his feet tended to catch fire at odd times, with his divine parentage, and he was wondering if burning hands might mean something similar. So he wandered over to say hi and see what he was doing.

The thing was, Zagreus was a big guy. He stood at 6'6 and looked like he worked out. Also whenever he was in shadow, such as during early evening when this encounter took place, his features tended to take on a more sinister aspect. Pinpoints of red light were born in his eyes.

The voice that came out didn't sound like it belonged to a dark and shadowy figure of menace, though. He sounded positively friendly as he admired the little creatures Leo was making. "Those are quite good, aren't they?"

What is with all the ridiculously tall ones. Leo stares up at the guy for a moment, clearly trying to analyze him a bit before he responds, though it's only a few seconds later, he flashes a small grin and nods.

For a moment, he's torn - is the guy talking about the food? He's not used to anyone paying him much . . . positive . . . attention, but he finally settles on just: "Yeah - definitely better than anything I've had before."

After a moment, he hits a button and the hamster in his lap sparks to life again. It looks around for a moment, and then its eyes land on the new guy. It squeaks and inches to the edge of Leo's lap before "sniffing" at Zagreus.

Leo's grinning and lifting the creature (it's maybe half a foot long - not as big as he's hoping for in the future, but details), "Knew that was all that was missing!"

With that, he's holding it up for the stranger to see, flashing an excited grin, "Now to build an army!"

Surely, he's joking...

"An army of hamsters? The world will be yours by this time tomorrow."

There was definitely something familiar about this guy. He'd never met him, he was pretty sure, but...

Zagreus took a risk and held out a hand to shake. "Zagreus, son of Hades. Pleased to meet you."

At first, he was laughing, looking awfully pleased with himself over that first part. He seemed more than ready to just continue joking - playing along, keeping things lighthearted, et cetera. But, then?

. . . Oh.

Oh.

Needless to say, said risk paid off, given just how visibly taken aback Leo was. For a moment, he just stared, looking maybe something between torn and... relieved? Finally, though:

"Leo Valdez, son of..." He paused, taking a deep breath before flashing a grin as he continued with: "Hephaestus."

But that grin definitely wasn't one of pride. If anything, there was the touch of something bitter, kind of like that name itself brought back some unpleasant memories. The only positive feeling he was having was something that came with a thought he'd never had before...

Maybe, for once... finally... he wasn't alone.

He caught that undercurrent of bitterness that Leo apparently felt towards his father and immediately knew he was going to like him. A shared bond of how much their respective fathers are terrible, perhaps. Zagreus shook Leo's hand.

"I've met a few Olympians, but never Hephaestus. Rumor has it he's a grumpy bastard."
