the best defense is literally any defense at all
Who: Ekkehardt, OTA
What: Addressing a perceived deficiency in the current curriculum
Where: An empty classroom
When: 14th-20th
Warnings: Nothing should come up but I'll change the header if it does.
Notes: I'll match you!
A.
[ You might find Ekkehardt out of the infirmary for once, tacking up a few posters here and there where students frequent. They're nondescript and not meant to be particularly noticeable. They provide relevant information about an unofficial self defense class.
The only particularly interesting part (besides Ekkehardt breaking his own routine) is that he's clearly specified that this class is explicitly for noncombatants. ]
B. Introduction
[ Upon reaching the classroom, Ekkehardt is sitting at the teacher's desk with his hands free, for once. There's a selection of various weapons - wooden ones, foam ones, some that are clearly for historical re-enactment - and implements (is that an umbrella?) laid out on the front row of desks. All in good condition (some are practically untouched).
He shows no signs of picking them up, or what they're going to be used for.
When students walk in, he simply nods at them in greeting. The only thing he really says is: ]
Do you have any questions before class starts?
C. Ekkehardt what (Practicals, part 1)
[ After he's deemed there's a reasonable amount of attendance, he stands up and indicates the weapons in all their mismatched glory. ]
All right. Here is the subject of today's class.
One at a time, you'll face off against me. I will have a weapon - you may choose it, if you like. You, on the other hand, will be unarmed.
Your objective is to stop me from touching you with the weapon. Otherwise, I win.
D. NO, REALLY, WHAT (Practicals, part 2)
[ When class is over, he indicates the selection of implements on the desk once more. ]
For the second part of this class, I want you to take one of these with you. Return them to me once you've completed the secondary task - which many of you will find vastly more entertaining, I'm sure.
[ He smiles, faintly. ]
Your objective is to touch or hit me with your weapon of choice. If you can do that, you win. And remember - you don't have to fight me. It's ideal if you do not.
You just need that weapon to make contact with me.
[ Over the next few days, Ekkehardt will be going about his business as usual. If you see him getting assaulted by various students wielding various weapons, he doesn't seem to mind at all.
In fact, he seems to be kind of enjoying it, in a weird way?? ]
E. Wildcard
[ Did you come here to see Ekkehardt teach for once and not be a fusspot in the infirmary? Are you just curious about what a self-defense class for noncombatants entails? Literally anything else? Hit me I'll roll with it. ]

Okay, I see how this is going to go~! Let's just save you some time and me some bruises! I quit~!
[He waves and heads for the door.]
no subject
[ He moves very quickly when he needs to. One moment he's behind Toki, and the next he's just there in front of him with bat in hand. ]
Do you intend to freeze up every time?
no subject
I don't know what I'd do! I never have a plan! You can't make plans for situations like that~! I'd just do whatever I felt like at the time! Instinct! And my instinct then was to freeze, but it may not be next time~! You never know~! But back to the first thing! Who wouldn't let me run away!? Can you imagine a situation where somebody or something doesn't want me to get as far away from them as possible!? I wouldn't even be any fun to kill, they'd have to do it quick or listen to me scream and cry and beg and it would just be awful and annoying~! Running away is totally my best option for almost every scenario really!
[Like now. The door's so close, but Ekkehardt's in the way.]
no subject
[ Skipping over the whole 'who wouldn't let me run away' thing because he doesn't want to traumatize this poor kid even more than he has already been traumatized. ]
Even if disarming me directly is beyond you, you could have distracted me or thrown obstacles in my way to get to the door without being impeded.
Use your brain, Mr Rikugou, I know you have one. If you can negotiate through your midterm, you can do this.
no subject
[Ekkehardt wants obstacles? He will get them. It's probably a terrible idea, but he's too frustrated to think it through. Toki picks up the nearest chair and swings it at Ekkehardt.]
no subject
[ He ducks the chair with another short, surprised laugh. Based on previous behaviour, he would have expected Toki to try to run away or freeze, rather than attack him directly, but the boy has more spirit in him than he thought.
It's a good thing. ]
Very good!
The purpose of this class is to train you to watch your opponent, the way they move. To look for openings and exploit them. [ If Toki tries to make another dash for the door, he'll use the bat in his hands to try and trip him; he deliberately makes his movements obvious, rather than fast. ]
no subject
[Ekkehardt probably should have expected the chair, given the broom incident.]
What you're talking about is too much work! In the time it takes to observe them long enough to look for patterns or openings and weakness, you'll be dead! This class is pointless!
[He doesn't have to leave to quit. Toki crosses his arms and just... stands there. Whatever. He can wait until the class time is up.]
no subject
no subject
Yes?
[He probably shouldn't have answered that question.]
no subject
Surely there are things you've come to look for or enjoy, Mr Rikugou? Or people? Perhaps even both, during your time here?
no subject
Haha, as much as anywhere else~! The point is that distracted you~! You weren't thinking about the class, were you? Success!
[He attempts to creep slowly to the desk with the weapons. There wasn't a rule he had to remain unarmed, right? It shouldn't be a rule if it is; weapons, whether traditional or improbable, can be found anywhere you are. You just have to get creative in an actual fight.]
no subject
Mm. You've distracted me, certainly. Well done. [ He lets Toki just...do that, because he's right - it wasn't said anywhere that he had to remain unarmed. Grabbing anything you can is entirely acceptable. ]
no subject
I shouldn't be underestimated~!
[He grabs a random weapon from the desk; it's some sort of wooden practice sword. He holds it like he would a baseball bat.]
Alright! Prepare yourself~!
[Which is another attempt at distraction. Toki takes one step towards Ekkehardt before throwing the sword at him and running for the window. He pries it open; hopefully this classroom is on the first floor.]
no subject
If he actually does the reckless thing and jumps out Ekkehardt's going RIGHT AFTER HIM, ACTUALLY. Otherwise, he's using the sword as an additional aid in another attempt to trip Toki up again. ]
no subject
no subject
Toki is fast enough that he can understand to an extent why running seems to be his first and only option for dealing with anything, but it won't last.
He tosses both weapons aside and leaps out the window after him.
He catches and grips the boy's arm, bandages already burning away as the spells he's cast come into effect, and the speed of the fall slows so dramatically that the world goes from rushing past to idly passing by. ]
Tokidoki Rikugou, what exactly do you think you're doing?
[ He doesn't sound angry. Tense, mostly, but not much more than that. ]
no subject
Toki certainly doesn't expect Ekkehardt to follow him out the window and slow his descent. They land without much incident. As Toki really has no good answer to that, nor an explanation for what he was thinking, he's going for distraction again.]
I'm so disappointed in you, Ekkehardt~! You didn't even keep the bat~! So, you see, I am completely capable of distracting enemies in ways they'll never see coming~!
no subject
Ekkehardt regards him with...honestly very little emotion whatsoever. When he speaks, his voice is serious. ]
Tokidoki Rikugou. If you keep treating your own life this way, you will get someone killed.
Do you understand that?
no subject
No! Because it's not my fault you jumped out the window too, right!?
[He's had so little meaningful interaction with people before Daybreak, he doesn't really get it. Everyone is their own entity. Whatever he does with his own life has no bearing on others.]
no subject
[ No running away this time. He keeps a firm grip on Toki's arm. It doesn't hurt, but it feels solid. ]
If someone you care about - who cares about you - gets themselves injured or hurt or killed to save you, because of a decision you made, will that be all you have to say to them? That it wasn't your fault?
no subject
[He really, really wants to just run and avoid this entire topic. He can't be responsible for people like that. It's too much.]
And it's- it's on them for caring about me in the first place! No one should ever rely on me for making decisions! They can't! I don't want them to!
[He can't explain how he feels about this kind of thing. It's overwhelming and he'll never ever make a decision if he has to worry about what the consequences would be to someone else. This is going so badly; he's never showing up for any classes like this again, and may or may not be contemplating leaving during spring break and just not coming back.]
no subject
Certainly, it's my fault! But it's a responsibility that I accept. That's what it means to be an adult, and to take the safety of those under my care seriously.
[ Even the most irresponsible faculty members understand their duties to students - not to get them in too much trouble, at the very least. To teach them what they can, in whatever way suits them. To keep them safe from harm.
His voice is quiet. ]
What are you so afraid of?
no subject
[He immediately regrets saying any of that. He's running the second Ekkehardt lets go of his arm.]
no subject
I won't take much more of your time - so listen to me.
The world around you is hardly fragile. It doesn't change based on whether you close your eyes and open them again. What you care about can be held onto, or let go, if you so desire - but you have to act upon it first.
[ It's life's curse as well as its blessing; things don't happen, or not happen, just because you wanted it. It's impossible to reshape the world around you with thought, to bend existence out of shape in that way. Unimportant and important, all at once. ]
And considering you've fainted and fallen to pieces at least twice within my sight, and you crack as soon as someone questions you about anything, I don't believe pretending is doing you any good.
But there. I can't teach you any more than that. [ He releases Toki, finally, though he's sure he'll probably regret this.
Has he made the right decision? Should he have let him run away?
But no, if he keeps running it only enforces bad habits...
...He doesn't know if he's made the right choice.
But he, too, has to live with the consequences of his actions. He accepts the cost of that, whatever it is. ]
no subject
That's because I stopped pretending.
[That's all the explanation Ekkehardt gets. A soon as he's free, Toki runs off to find some place where he doesn't have to think for a while.]
